The ASUS ZenWiFi BQ16 Pro is a premium quad-band Wi-Fi 7 mesh system with two 6 GHz radios, two 10 Gbps ports, and strong short-range results in Tom’s Guide’s testing. Its headline 30 Gbps class and advertised coverage of up to 8,000 square feet for a two-pack are not promises of household speed or coverage: the same test found throughput dropped sharply at longer distances, and the two-pack left dead zones in one large, older home. It makes most sense for a home that can use its multi-gigabit wired connections and has Wi-Fi 7 or 6 GHz clients—not for anyone buying on square-foot claims alone.
What the BQ16 Pro is—and what its speed rating means
ASUS lists the ZenWiFi BQ16 Pro as a BE30000-class, 802.11be Wi-Fi 7 system. It is quad-band: one 2.4 GHz radio, one 5 GHz radio, and two 6 GHz radios. ASUS’s theoretical maximum PHY rates are 1,376 Mbps, 5,764 Mbps, and 11,529 Mbps on each 6 GHz band, respectively. Added together, those figures explain the BE30000 class label; they are not a prediction of what one device will get from an internet speed test. Real client throughput depends on the client’s radio, distance, interference, connection to the mesh, and internet service. See ASUS’s BQ16 Pro specifications.
The two 6 GHz bands give the system more wireless capacity than a tri-band design, but a client must support the relevant Wi-Fi 7 and 6 GHz features to benefit directly. Availability and permitted use of 6 GHz also depend on geography and local regulations; the cited product material is ASUS USA, so check local product and regulatory details if buying elsewhere.

How fast is it in independent testing?
Tom’s Guide measured throughput of 2.620 Gbps at 15 feet, 1.532 Gbps at 50 feet, 567.8 Mbps at 75 feet, and 46.7 Mbps at 90 feet in its review setup. These are that publication’s test results, not guaranteed speeds in another home. The progression is the useful point: impressive near the test location, then much lower at the longest distance. The figures and test context are in Tom’s Guide’s BQ16 Pro review.
#1 Best Overall
- Powerful WiFi 7 mesh future-proofs your smart home with blazing-fast quad-band connectivity up to 30000 Mbps with Multi-Link Operation and 4096-QAM.
- Ultimate AiMesh powered by AI delivers robust backhaul connections and seamless connectivity for all devices, covering up to 8,000 sq.ft. (2pk), and a feature-rich whole-home network that scales with any ASUS extendable routers.
- Easily establish up to three SSIDs with Smart Home Master for simple IoT device setup and management, instant VPN connections, and convenient parental controls.
- Twelve internal antennas and sixteen high-power front-end modules eliminate WiFi dead zones in all directions while robust heat dissipation enhances WiFi reliability.
- Establish always-on internet through versatile WAN configuration options and convenient USB port ready for 4G LTE and 5G mobile tethering.
Those results should guide expectations rather than serve as a direct prediction for your floor plan. Walls, construction materials, placement, interference, and whether mesh nodes use wireless or wired backhaul can all change performance. If the far end of your home matters as much as the room beside the router, prioritize comparable long-distance testing and placement over the combined band-rate number.
Will a one- or two-pack cover your home?
ASUS advertises coverage of up to 4,000 square feet from one unit and up to 8,000 square feet from a two-pack. Treat those as manufacturer estimates, not a coverage guarantee. Floor area alone does not account for concrete or plaster walls, multiple floors, interference, node location, or device capability.

Tom’s Guide reported that its two-pack did not eliminate all dead zones in a 3,500-square-foot, 100-year-old house. That is one building and test, not proof that the kit will fail in every similar-sized home; it does demonstrate why construction and layout can matter more than a headline square-foot figure. If a difficult corner or basement is the main problem, plan for a possible third node or wired access point rather than assuming two units will reach everywhere.
Ports and wired connectivity
The BQ16 Pro provides two 10 Gbps-capable ports, one of which can operate as WAN or LAN, three 1 Gbps LAN ports, and USB 3.0. RTINGS also identifies the two 10 Gbps connections, three gigabit ports, and USB-A 3.0 in its BQ16 Pro review. The 10 Gbps connections are useful when your modem, switch, NAS, or wired client can use multi-gigabit Ethernet; the three gigabit LAN ports remain a constraint for devices that need more than 1 Gbps over a wired connection. Port capability alone does not make an internet plan or endpoint faster.

Setup and expanding an ASUS mesh
The system can work as a wireless router, access point, or AiMesh node. ASUS’s quick-start guide covers both standalone setup and AiMesh configuration. For a new mesh, designate one unit as the router and another as a node; ASUS recommends placing the units in the same room and at least one meter apart during setup. The ASUS Router app can add an AiMesh node. Consult the BQ16 Pro quick-start guide for the device-specific steps.
Tom’s Guide reviewer Brian Nadel said his networks configured and connected on the first try, completing app setup in 7 minutes 30 seconds on a Samsung Galaxy S20. That is one reviewer’s setup experience, not a time estimate for every phone, network, or installation. ASUS says Smart AiMesh supports compatible ZenWiFi and standalone ASUS routers; compatibility is model-specific, so verify the exact router and feature support before buying an additional node. ASUS’s Smart AiMesh announcement describes the compatible-product scope.

Firmware: check for the current regional release
ASUS’s support page lists firmware version 3.0.0.6.102_39256, dated May 4, 2026, with fixes for unsafe remote script execution and a heap buffer overflow during cache handling. ASUS recommends upgrading to that version for protection. Firmware changes over time and may vary by region, so check the official BQ16 Pro support page for the latest release for your model and location before installing.

- Consider it if you want a high-end Wi-Fi 7 mesh, have compatible newer clients, need two 10 Gbps-capable ports, or plan to use a multi-gig wired network.
- Be cautious if your main requirement is guaranteed whole-home coverage. The advertised area is an estimate, and an independent two-pack test still found dead zones in one large, older house.
- Compare alternatives using measured throughput at distances relevant to your home, tests in similar construction, multi-gig port counts, Wi-Fi 7/6 GHz client support, expansion compatibility, and the total cost for the number of nodes you need.
Tom’s Guide compared distance results with the Netgear Orbi RBE973 and TP-Link Deco BE85 in its review, but use comparisons only within that publication’s test conditions. Its review described the launch two-pack at about $1,300; that is a launch-era price snapshot, not a current quote. Current price, stock, and pack configuration vary by retailer and region, so verify them at the time you shop.
