The ASUS ZenWiFi BD4 Outdoor is a dual-band Wi-Fi 7 router designed to bring wireless connectivity to outdoor spaces. It combines an IP65-rated enclosure, two 2.5G ports with PoE+ support, and AiMesh compatibility. ASUS advertises up to 15,000 square feet of outdoor coverage in an open, unobstructed environment; actual range depends on installation conditions and connected devices.
What is the ASUS ZenWiFi BD4 Outdoor?
ASUS announced the router on April 29, 2025, describing it as an outdoor Wi-Fi 7 option for devices such as security cameras, smart-home equipment, remote-work setups and streaming devices. It uses IEEE 802.11be and is a dual-band BE3600-class router, with an advertised combined rate of up to 3,600 Mbps across the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. That figure is a theoretical aggregate rate, not the expected speed of a single device. ASUS Pressroom
Its Wi-Fi 7 features include Multi-Link Operation (MLO), 4K-QAM and support for 160 MHz channels. Real-world performance depends on the main router and client devices, radio conditions, configuration and internet connection.

ASUS specifies an IP65 water-resistant and dustproof enclosure and an operating temperature range of -30°C to 60°C. IP65 indicates protection against dust ingress and water jets under specified test conditions; it does not mean the unit can be submerged or is immune to every form of weather exposure. Installation should follow ASUS’s product guidance, including appropriate cable routing and mounting. ASUS product specifications

- Dual-band WiFi 7 speeds up to 5000 Mbps with MLO and 4K-QAM.
- WiFi 7 powering AiMesh technology boosts coverage up to 2500 ft², with easy extendibility and seamless connectivity for compatible ASUS routers, indoors and outdoors.
- Built for durability with ESD and surge protection, an IP65 certified water-resistant and dustproof enclosure, and a wide operating range from -30°C to 60°C, making it ideal for outdoor environments.
- Supports both Power over Ethernet and AC power for streamlined installation options, with two 2.5G PoE-in ports featuring AI WAN detection.
- Versatile mounting options provide easy deployment in various outdoor scenarios, whether wall-mounted, pole-mounted, or placed on a flat surface.
ASUS also lists electrostatic-discharge and surge protection. These specifications do not establish that every installation is protected from lightning, flooding or other severe exposure.
How much outdoor coverage does it provide?
ASUS advertises coverage of up to 15,000 square feet outdoors in an open, unobstructed environment. Its press material also cites up to 2,530 square feet in its stated coverage context. These are manufacturer coverage claims, not independently verified range tests; walls, foliage, interference, placement, regional radio limits and client devices can change the area and quality of coverage. Does it need a PoE switch?
No. The BD4 Outdoor can receive power through PoE+ or use its included AC adapter. Its two 2.5G ports support automatic WAN detection, and ASUS identifies them as PoE-in ports. A PoE installation needs an IEEE 802.3at-capable source and suitable Ethernet cabling; a compatible PoE+ switch or injector can provide that source. If Ethernet already reaches the mounting point, PoE+ can reduce the need for a separate power outlet there. ASUS Pressroom ASUS product specifications
Can it extend an existing ASUS AiMesh network?
Yes. ASUS says the BD4 Outdoor can join a compatible AiMesh network using either wired or wireless backhaul. In an AiMesh extender configuration, Wi-Fi 7 features require a Wi-Fi 7 main router. ASUS also notes that AiMesh roaming is unavailable when the BD4 Outdoor is connected directly to a modem. Check your existing router’s AiMesh compatibility and intended topology before installation. - Power and cabling: Decide whether PoE+ from an IEEE 802.3at-capable source or the included AC adapter suits the mounting location.
- Backhaul and compatibility: Confirm that your ASUS router supports AiMesh and whether wired or wireless backhaul is practical. A Wi-Fi 7 main router is needed for Wi-Fi 7 features in an extender setup.
- Coverage expectations: Treat the advertised area as an open-space maximum, not a guarantee through buildings, vegetation or interference.
- Installation conditions: Choose a suitable mounting position and remember that IP65 does not cover submersion or every extreme-weather scenario.
- Regional availability: ASUS says specifications and availability can differ by country; check local product information before purchasing. ASUS product specifications
ASUS’s published figures describe product specifications and claims; they do not establish independent throughput, range or weather-exposure test results.
