What the reported Amazon deal includes
The October 8, 2026 deal report describes an ASUS ZenDrive external DVD writer at $37.88, compared with a prior price of $44.99. The 16% figure is rounded from the reported prices; it is not a guarantee of the current price or availability. TechRadar’s deal report does not name the precise model in the Amazon listing.
That distinction matters: ASUS sells several ZenDrive models, and their connectors and specifications are not identical. The deal description’s reference to USB-A and USB-C resembles ASUS’s U9M, but that is not enough to establish that the Amazon offer is for a U9M. Confirm the model number on the retailer listing rather than relying on the ZenDrive name alone.
Who should consider an external DVD writer?
A DVD writer is useful if a computer has no built-in optical drive and you still need to read CDs or DVDs, install software supplied on disc, or create physical disc backups. It connects externally over USB; the specific connector and compatibility depend on the model and your computer.

For routine file transfers, a USB flash drive or external SSD is generally more practical, as TechRadar notes. The optical drive makes sense when the source or destination is specifically a disc, not as a general-purpose storage upgrade.
What to verify before buying
- Exact model: Check the model number in the Amazon listing and match it to ASUS’s specifications. ASUS’s external DVD drive catalog lists several ZenDrive models, including U3M, V1M, SDRW-08D2S-U, U7M, and U9M.
- Host connector: Confirm whether the drive has the USB-A or USB-C connection your computer can use. ASUS identifies the U9M (SDRW-08U9M-U) as compatible with USB Type-A and Type-C; that connector information should not be generalized to every ZenDrive.
- Disc type: ZenDrive models discussed here are DVD writers, not Blu-ray drives. If you need Blu-ray playback or burning, this is the wrong category of product.
- Operating system: Check the exact model’s supported operating systems. ASUS lists Windows and Mac compatibility for multiple catalog models, but support details vary. For example, its U3M specifications list Mac OS X 10.6 and later and Windows 8/8.1, 10, and 11.
- Writing needs: Check that the drive supports the disc format you plan to write. ASUS lists M-DISC support for several ZenDrive models, but compatibility depends on the model and media format.
DVD and M-DISC specifications vary by model
ASUS’s published specifications illustrate why it is important to identify the exact unit. The U3M (SDRW-08U3M-U) is specified with USB 3.2 Gen 2×1 Type-C, DVD-R/DVD+R writing up to 8x, CD-R/CD-RW writing up to 24x, and single-layer DVD+R M-DISC writing up to 4x. ASUS lists the U9M (SDRW-08U9M-U) with USB 2.0 Type-A and Type-C compatibility, DVD-R/DVD+R writing up to 8x, and single-layer DVD+R M-DISC writing up to 4x.
