ASUS demonstrated its BTF 2.5 GC-HPWR connector carrying more than 1,900W on a test setup, with the connector reported at about 39–41°C. That is evidence of impressive connector headroom in that demonstration—not a claim that a stock RTX 5090 draws 1,900W in games, or proof that BTF is universally safer than conventional 16-pin connectors.

What happened in ASUS’s 1,900W demonstration?

ASUS China general manager Tony Yu demonstrated the company’s BTF 2.5 GC-HPWR power interface under a staged load. Reports describe a test board or dummy PCB, not a retail graphics card running a game. The load was raised in stages, reported at roughly 680W, 1,300W and 1,900W. HotHardware reported that the wires exceeded 70°C while the connector itself remained at about 41°C; VideoCardz reported a connector temperature in the range of 39–41°C at the highest stage. VideoCardz also describes a separate dual-PSU demonstration exceeding 2,600W. That is a different test, not the 1,900W result, and neither figure should be read as the normal power draw of an RTX 5090.

What does the test prove—and what does it not?

The result supports a narrow but useful conclusion: in ASUS’s reported demonstration, the GC-HPWR contact area stayed near 40°C at a very high staged load, even as the wires became substantially hotter. That is evidence of thermal headroom at the connector under those test conditions.

It does not establish a long-term reliability advantage, independent certification, or universal safety. The cited coverage does not provide a standardized lifetime or repeated-cycle test. Nor does the result show that all conventional plastic 16-pin connectors are unsafe, or that every BTF installation is immune to poor seating, cable strain, or other installation errors.

How ASUS BTF 2.5 works

BTF places power connections on the rear of compatible motherboards to reduce visible cabling on the front side of a build. ASUS’s support guidance distinguishes the graphics-card revisions: BTF 2.0 cards use a GC-HPWR gold finger without a card-side 16-pin socket; BTF 2.5 cards have a detachable GC-HPWR interface as well as a conventional 16-pin connector. ASUS says the motherboard’s GC-HPWR interface can provide up to 600W. ASUS support: BTF graphics card compatibility

With a compatible BTF 2.5 motherboard

The card’s gold-finger interface mates with the motherboard’s GC-HPWR slot, while the power supply’s 16-pin cable connects at the rear of the motherboard. This is the hidden-cable configuration.

  • OC mode: 2580 MHz Default mode: 2550 MHz(Boost clock)
  • Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
  • SFF-Ready Enthusiast GeForce Card
  • Axial-tech fans feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure

With a standard motherboard

Remove the detachable GC-HPWR part and connect the card through its conventional 16-pin connector. This flexibility is a BTF 2.5 feature; do not assume a BTF 2.0 card has the same fallback.

What are the retail RTX 5090 BTF card’s specifications?

ASUS’s listed model is the ROG Astral GeForce RTX 5090 32GB GDDR7 BTF OC Edition, model ROG-ASTRAL-RTX5090-O32G-BTF-GAMING. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance results. ASUS product page

Specification ASUS-listed value
Memory 32GB GDDR7
Interface PCIe 5.0
Card thickness 3.8 slots
Power connections One 16-pin GC-HPWR gold-finger connection
Recommended PSU 1000W

What should buyers consider?

The demonstration is relevant if you are weighing cable visibility and connector design, but it is not a substitute for checking the complete system fit. BTF’s hidden power path depends on motherboard compatibility; BTF 2.5’s removable interface offers a conventional 16-pin route on a standard motherboard.

  • Motherboard: A compatible BTF 2.5 motherboard is required for the hidden GC-HPWR path.
  • Fallback: The BTF 2.5 card retains a conventional 16-pin connector after the detachable GC-HPWR piece is removed.
  • Power: ASUS recommends a 1000W PSU for this retail card; that recommendation is distinct from the connector stress-test load.
  • Physical fit: The card is 3.8 slots thick, so confirm case and adjacent-slot clearance.
  • Evidence: The reported 1,900W result is a connector demonstration, not independent long-term reliability testing.
