The ASUS RT-BE86U is a dual-band WiFi 7 (802.11be) router built for fast wired networking: one 10G WAN/LAN port and four 2.5G Ethernet ports. ASUS rates its wireless links at up to 5,764 Mbps on 5 GHz and 1,032 Mbps on 2.4 GHz (6,800 Mbps combined). Those are link-rate specifications, not guaranteed internet speeds or independent throughput results.
What the RT-BE86U includes
| Item | ASUS specification | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi | WiFi 7 / 802.11be, dual-band | 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz radios; there is no 6 GHz band. |
| Advertised wireless rate | Up to 5,764 Mbps (5 GHz) and 1,032 Mbps (2.4 GHz), 6,800 Mbps combined | Maximum manufacturer-listed link rates. Actual speed depends on the client, channel conditions, distance and network traffic. |
| 10G Ethernet | 1 × 10G WAN/LAN | Can serve as the internet WAN connection or a high-speed LAN connection, but not both simultaneously. |
| 2.5G Ethernet | 1 × 2.5G WAN/LAN and 3 × 2.5G LAN | Four 2.5G-capable ports in total; the shared WAN/LAN port’s role depends on your configuration. |
| USB | 1 × USB 3.2 Gen 1, 1 × USB 2.0 | Supports documented router features such as USB storage and tethering, subject to device compatibility. |
| Operating modes | Wireless router, access point, repeater, media bridge and AiMesh node | It can be the main router, an access point or part of an ASUS mesh system. |
See ASUS’s RT-BE86U product page and Australian technical specifications for the published feature and port details.
Does it really have a 10-gigabit port?
Yes. The RT-BE86U has one 10G Ethernet port labeled for WAN/LAN use. ASUS describes it as suitable for a next-generation internet connection or high-speed devices such as a workstation, NAS or media-production system.
Using it as a 10G WAN port
Connect the router’s 10G WAN/LAN port to a 10G-capable port on your modem, ONT or broadband gateway. Your service must also provision more than 1 Gbps; a 10G socket does not upgrade a slower subscription.
#1 Best Overall
- Beyond-fast WiFi 7 (802.11be) router enables WiFi 7 performance (Multi-link Operation (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) and 4096-QAM), boosting dual band throughput up to 6800 Mbps
- Ultrahigh-speed 10 Gigabit Ethernet with one standard 10G WAN/LAN port empowers supreme wired network capacity up to 20G
- Always-on internet with Versatile WAN options, hassle-free AI WAN detection on 2.5G or 10G WAN/LAN ports and convenient 4G LTE & 5G Mobile Tethering via USB
- A powerhouse quad-core 2.6 GHz 64-bit CPU unleashes full performance for demanding WiFi 7 and 10 Gigabit network applications
- Guest Network Pro offers effortless network segmentation with up to five SSIDs for easy IoT device setup and management, instant VPN connections and convenient parental controls
Using it as a 10G LAN port
If your internet connection enters through another WAN port, configure the 10G socket for LAN use and connect a compatible computer, NAS or switch. The end device, intermediate switch and cabling must all support the target link speed for a 10G connection.
How many 2.5G ports are there?
There are four 2.5G Ethernet ports: one is configurable as WAN/LAN and three are LAN-only. This gives a small office several multi-gigabit wired connections without adding a switch. The 2.5G WAN/LAN port can be used for broadband service when the 10G port is assigned to LAN, or for LAN expansion when the 10G port is WAN.

What WiFi 7 features are documented?
- 160 MHz channels: wider channels can increase potential throughput when the spectrum is clean and the client supports them.
- 4096-QAM (4K-QAM): a higher-order modulation mode that can raise link rates in favorable radio conditions.
- Dual-band Multi-Link Operation (MLO): compatible WiFi 7 clients may use both supported bands for improved efficiency or responsiveness.
- OFDMA and multi-antenna radios: ASUS lists 5 GHz 4×4 and 2.4 GHz 3×3 configurations.
These capabilities require compatible client hardware and suitable signal conditions. Older Wi-Fi devices continue to connect, but they will not receive WiFi 7-specific benefits or the highest advertised rates.

Internet speed versus wireless link rate
The 6,800 Mbps combined figure adds ASUS’s maximum 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz radio rates; it is not a single-device speed, a guaranteed throughput measurement or a promise that an internet plan will deliver 6.8 Gbps. A device’s negotiated rate can be lower because of its Wi-Fi generation, channel width, antenna configuration, interference and distance. No independent throughput or coverage test was established for this model here.

AiMesh and coverage expansion
ASUS lists the RT-BE86U as usable either as an AiMesh primary router or as an AiMesh node. A compatible second ASUS router can extend coverage under one network name, and ASUS also documents Ethernet backhaul support.
When adding an AiMesh node makes sense
- Your home or office has dead zones that a single router cannot cover.
- You can place the second unit where it still receives a reliable connection, ideally with Ethernet backhaul when available.
- You have checked that the exact ASUS model and firmware support AiMesh together.
ASUS advertises coverage up to 2,750 square feet, but walls, floor plan, building materials and interference determine actual coverage.

Guest Network Pro, VPN and tethering features
ASUS documents Guest Network Pro for separate guest, child, IoT and VPN-oriented networks, including VLAN-related separation. VPN Fusion and site-to-site VPN functions are also listed. These are manufacturer feature descriptions, not an independent security audit.
USB tethering for 4G/5G mobile connectivity is supported as a documented feature. Compatibility with a particular phone, modem, carrier or data plan is not established, so check ASUS’s current compatibility information before relying on it as a backup link.

Choosing the right setup
| Your situation | Practical configuration | Key check |
|---|---|---|
| Multi-gigabit broadband and one high-speed wired device | Use 10G as WAN; connect the device to a 2.5G LAN port | Confirm the service, gateway and client support the subscribed speed. |
| Gigabit-or-slower broadband but a 10G NAS or workstation | Use a WAN port for internet and assign 10G to LAN | Verify the client and any switch are 10G-capable. |
| Several 2.5G wired devices | Use the three dedicated 2.5G LAN ports plus the configurable 2.5G port when available | Plan which port carries WAN traffic. |
| Large or difficult layout | Run the RT-BE86U as the main AiMesh router and add a compatible ASUS node | Check exact model compatibility and placement. |
| Mostly wireless devices | Use WiFi 7 clients on 5 GHz; retain 2.4 GHz for range-oriented or legacy devices | Client support, channel conditions and distance matter more than the headline rate. |
What you need for the 10G port
- A 10G-capable device on the other end: an ONT, modem, switch, NAS or computer.
- An internet plan provisioned above 1 Gbps if the port is used for WAN.
- Ethernet cabling and intermediate hardware rated for the speed you intend to run; ASUS’s published specifications do not mandate one universal cable category.
- Router configuration that assigns the 10G socket to WAN or LAN as required.
Who should buy the RT-BE86U?
It is a strong fit for a home or small office that needs a 10G uplink, several 2.5G wired ports and WiFi 7 on the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz bands. It is less compelling if you need 6 GHz Wi-Fi, have only sub-gigabit networking and no multi-gigabit local devices, or expect a headline wireless number to translate directly into internet throughput. There is no independent performance test in the available evidence, so purchase decisions should be based on the port layout, client compatibility, coverage plan and service speed rather than the advertised aggregate rate alone.
