The ROG Xbox Ally X is a powerful Windows gaming handheld with an Xbox-focused interface, not a portable Xbox console. PC Gamer found it to be the fastest handheld gaming PC in that outlet’s review-time tests, but the lead was small at its highest-power setting. Its comfortable redesigned grips and access to PC storefronts are compelling; its non-OLED display, Windows complexity and premium price make it a harder recommendation for buyers who mainly want a simple Xbox experience.
What the ROG Xbox Ally X is—and what it isn’t
ASUS announced the ROG Xbox Ally X with Xbox in June 2025. It is built around an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor and runs Windows 11. The Xbox branding describes a gaming-oriented interface and access to Xbox services, not a console operating system that natively runs every Xbox console game. ASUS’s announcement describes the redesigned grip and Xbox-inspired experience.
The Xbox Full-screen Experience opens to a controller-friendly gaming interface and brings games from Xbox and other installed PC storefronts together. An Xbox button provides access to Game Bar features. That layer can make a Windows handheld feel more console-like, but Windows remains underneath; hiding parts of the desktop does not remove the flexibility—or the occasional complexity—of a PC. Xbox’s launch description calls it a dedicated gaming experience powered by Windows 11.

Can the Xbox Ally X play Xbox games?
Yes, through several different routes, but “play Xbox games” does not mean every console game installs and runs locally on the handheld. The distinction matters: some games are Windows PC versions, while others are streamed from a console or cloud service.
| Access method | What happens | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Native PC play | Install and run PC games from supported storefronts, including Xbox and other PC stores. | Check the individual game’s compatibility and controls; access to a PC version is not the same as access to its console version. |
| Xbox Play Anywhere | Supported titles can be played across Xbox console, PC and handheld with one purchase. | Support is title-specific. Confirm that the game is Play Anywhere before relying on this route. |
| Remote play | Stream games from your own Xbox console over a network. | You need the console and a suitable network connection; this is streaming, not local installation of the console game. |
| Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta) | Stream supported games through the cloud where the service is available. | Availability and supported games depend on the service, region and current catalog. |
At launch, Xbox said thousands of games would be marked Handheld Optimized or Mostly Compatible. That was a launch-era catalog statement, not a permanent count. Check Xbox’s current handheld compatibility information for individual titles. Game Pass availability and cloud features also vary; do not assume a particular tier, game or trial is included without checking current terms.
How fast is it?
The strongest performance claim is specific to PC Gamer’s review, not a verified October 2026 market-wide ranking. Reviewer Dave James wrote, “In short, this is the fastest handheld gaming PC we’ve tested on PC Gamer,” based on that outlet’s review-time tests. PC Gamer reported that the Ally X beat the devices it compared: the original ROG Ally X with Z1 Extreme, OneXPlayer OneXFly F1 Pro with Ryzen AI 9 HX 370, and MSI Claw 8 AI+ with Intel Core Ultra 7 285V. PC Gamer’s review also makes clear that the lead was only a handful of frames per second at the top Turbo preset.

A small edge can matter when a handheld is already operating at low integrated-graphics frame rates, but the peak result is not the whole buying decision. PC Gamer described FC 26 as responsive at native 1080p on the 17 W Performance preset with Auto settings. That is one reviewer’s game and configuration, not a guarantee for every title or a standardized comparison across all handhelds.
Ars Technica compared the Xbox Full-screen Experience with the Windows 11 desktop in its tests. It measured less than one frame per second of difference in many cases and no more than one or two frames per second in its reported tests. This suggests the interface itself did not deliver a large performance increase in those games; it does not establish results for every title or later software builds. Ars Technica’s review details the comparison.
Reviews are not a controlled, identical-condition comparison across the current market. If you compare handhelds, use the same game, resolution, graphics settings, power profile and measurement method. Peak Turbo figures alone can obscure what a device delivers at a more realistic handheld power setting.

Comfort, screen and software trade-offs
Redesigned grips
ASUS says the chassis was redesigned for a more comfortable grip inspired by Xbox controllers. PC Gamer’s reviewer called it the most comfortable handheld gaming PC they had used, while noting that the extended grips make it chunkier. That is a favorable individual impression, not a universal comfort ranking. If possible, consider how the larger grip feels in your hands and whether its bulk suits your bag and play style.

PC Gamer described a responsive 1080p panel but called its perceived flatness and lack of vibrancy a disappointment, especially compared with an OLED rival. The Ally X does not have an OLED screen. That review does not establish a current, comprehensive display comparison across every competing handheld, so judge the panel against your own priorities for contrast and color rather than treating one comparison as definitive. PC Gamer’s review explains its display assessment.
Controller-first interface, with Windows underneath
Tom’s Hardware praised the ergonomics and found the interface easier to navigate with a controller than the standard Windows desktop, while cautioning that PC complexity remains. Its review unit initially lacked the final Xbox Full-screen Experience build; the reviewer used an Xbox Insider account and installed driver and BIOS updates. That launch-review setup is relevant context, not proof that every current owner will face the same process. Tom’s Hardware’s review describes its experience.

- Next-level Immersion. Immerse yourself in unparalleled gaming with a 7-inch 1080p, 120Hz VRR touchscreen featuring FreeSync Premium and powerful dual front-firing speakers with Dolby Atmos, Smart Amp, and AI noise cancellation.
- Play Longer with an 80Wh Battery. The massive 80Wh battery allows you to play all your favorite games even when away from a power outlet. Fast charge technology lets you charge from 0% to 50% in just 30 minutes
- Game All Day with Upgraded Ergonomics. The ROG Ally X features a lightweight 1.49 lb chassis and redesigned ergonomics with taller, more substantial handgrips, refined macro keys, flat surface angles, and upgraded joysticks for a comfortable gaming experience.
Ars Technica also criticized early software roughness. Together, these reviews suggest the interface is a meaningful convenience layer rather than a complete conversion of Windows into a traditional console environment. Software behavior can change with updates, so launch reviews should not be read as a guarantee about later builds.
Is the ROG Xbox Ally X worth it?
At the time of its launch reviews, Tom’s Hardware described its tested unit at $999.99, and Ars Technica referred to the X as $1,000. Those are historical U.S. review-era prices, not verified current prices. PC Gamer praised performance and comfort but considered the price difficult to recommend to most buyers. Check the current price and stock in your region before deciding; neither those old figures nor the launch review verdict settles today’s value. Tom’s Hardware, Ars Technica and PC Gamer give the relevant review context.
The Ally X makes most sense if you want a high-performance Windows handheld, value its grip, and expect to use PC storefronts alongside Xbox services. It is a weaker fit if your priority is a traditional console experience in portable form, an OLED screen, or an uncomplicated interface that eliminates PC upkeep. Before buying, weigh:
