The ASUS ROG Swift PG279Q is still a capable gaming monitor if you find one in good condition at a sensible price. Its 27-inch 2560×1440 IPS/AHVA panel combines native NVIDIA G-SYNC with a 144Hz refresh rate and an overclock option up to 165Hz. Fast motion handling and low input lag make it best suited to gaming, while wide viewing angles and adjustable ergonomics also help with office and multimedia use. Its weak point is dark-room picture quality: blacks look gray, and it has neither HDR support nor a wide-gamut mode.
What the PG279Q offers
The PG279Q pairs QHD resolution with a high refresh rate in a 27-inch IPS/AHVA display. Its core specifications, as documented by RTINGS and Tom’s Hardware reviews published between 2016 and 2020, are:
| Feature | PG279Q |
|---|---|
| Screen size | 27 inches |
| Resolution | 2560×1440 (QHD/1440p) |
| Panel | IPS/AHVA |
| Refresh rate | 144Hz native; overclockable to 165Hz |
| Variable refresh rate | Native NVIDIA G-SYNC |
| Motion-blur feature | ULMB support |
| HDR | No HDR support, according to RTINGS |
For the underlying specifications and review findings, see RTINGS’ ASUS ROG Swift PG279Q review and Tom’s Hardware’s PG279Q review.

Gaming is the PG279Q’s strongest use. RTINGS found its response time at maximum refresh and input lag outstanding, making it well suited to fast-paced play. Native G-SYNC coordinates the display’s refresh with a compatible NVIDIA graphics card’s output, reducing tearing when frame delivery varies. The monitor supports 144Hz natively and can be overclocked to 165Hz; the higher setting is an option, not the native refresh rate.
#1 Best Overall
- Dual-Mode High-Performance Display: 26.5-inch QHD OLED gaming monitor with versatile dual mode (QHD @ 540Hz or HD @ 720Hz) and 0.02ms response time
- Advanced Tandem OLED Technology: New Tandem OLED technology delivers 15% higher peak brightness, 25% larger color volume, and 60% longer OLED lifespan versus previous-generation WOLED panels
- TrueBlack Glossy Panel: New TrueBlack Glossy panel provides a zero-haze surface and exceptionally sharp imagery
- OLED Care Pro with Neo Proximity Sensor: ASUS OLED Care Pro with Neo Proximity Sensor precisely detects when the user is away and switches to a black screen to reduce the risk of burn-in
- Exceptional HDR Performance: VESA DisplayHDR 500 True Black compliance, 99.5% DCI-P3 gamut, true 10-bit color, and Delta E<2 color difference for astonishing HDR performance
The sharp QHD image gives games more detail and desktop space than a 1080p display of the same size. Tom’s Hardware also characterized the panel as bright and sharp and documented ULMB support. That feature is distinct from G-SYNC: it is a motion-blur-reduction option rather than variable refresh, so compare the available modes and choose based on whether smooth variable-rate play or reduced perceived blur matters more to you.
Picture quality beyond gaming
Strengths for work and everyday use
The IPS/AHVA panel has wide viewing angles, so the image remains more consistent when viewed from the side than it would on a narrow-viewing-angle panel. RTINGS also notes the monitor’s ergonomics as a strength for office work. Combined with 2560×1440 resolution, that makes it a practical screen for documents, browsing, and multimedia as well as games.

- Immersive 4K QD-OLED Display: 32-inch 4K (3840 x 2160) QD-OLED gaming monitor with 240 Hz refresh rate and 0.03 ms (GTG) response time for immersive gaming
- Advanced Heat Management System: Highly efficient custom heatsink, advanced airflow design, and graphene film for better heat management to reduce the risk of burn-in
- Exceptional HDR Performance: VESA DisplayHDR 400 True Black compliance, 99% DCI-P3 gamut, true 10-bit, and Delta E < 2 color difference for astonishing HDR performance
- Uniform Brightness Setting: Optional uniform brightness setting ensures consistent luminance levels across the entire display
- Convenient Monitor Control: DisplayWidget Center allows users to access OLED Care functions, as well as adjust monitor settings with a mouse
Limits in dark rooms and HDR
The principal image-quality compromise is low native contrast. In a dim room, black areas can look gray rather than deep black, which is especially noticeable in dark games and films. RTINGS records no HDR support, and the monitor does not offer a wide-gamut mode. If deep blacks, HDR highlights, or expanded color are central to your use, this is not the right kind of display to prioritize.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPG279Q vs. PG279QZ
RTINGS identifies the PG279QZ as the model that replaced the PG279Q and describes it as nearly identical overall, with brightness as a difference. That makes the QZ the most relevant like-for-like comparison, but RTINGS’ published reviews do not establish a specific brightness figure or current price for either model. Compare the exact unit’s condition and warranty rather than assuming the newer model is a major performance redesign.

- World's First 1440P 480Hz OLED Gaming Monitor: Experience unprecedented gaming performance with the industry's first 1440P resolution OLED display running at an incredible 480Hz refresh rate
- Ultra-Fast Response Time and High Refresh Rate: 26.5-inch QHD 480Hz WOLED gaming monitor delivers 0.03ms response time for sharp and ultra-fast gaming visuals without motion blur

- Superior Color Accuracy and HDR Performance: 99% DCI-P3 color gamut coverage and Delta E <2 color difference deliver astonishing HDR performance with true-to-life colors
When weighing the PG279Q against the PG279QZ or a newer monitor, focus on the features that affect your use:
- Motion and refresh: Check whether 144Hz or the PG279Q’s optional 165Hz overclock meets your needs, and consider how motion clarity is handled.
- Variable refresh: The PG279Q has native G-SYNC. Confirm whether an alternative offers native G-SYNC or G-SYNC-compatible operation.
- Dark-room image: Compare contrast and black levels if you game or watch video in a dim room.
- HDR and color: Newer options may add HDR or wider color gamut, features the PG279Q lacks.
- Condition and protection: Compare ergonomics, used or refurbished condition, and warranty coverage alongside price.
Should you buy the PG279Q today?
It remains a strong fit for someone who wants a QHD high-refresh gaming screen with native G-SYNC, and who values motion handling more than HDR or dark-room contrast. Its age changes the buying calculation: RTINGS says it has been replaced by the PG279QZ, and present-day availability may be limited to used or refurbished units. Stock, price, condition, and warranty can vary, so verify those details for the specific listing rather than relying on an assumed current retail price.
