The ASUS ROG Phone II was a 2019 gaming flagship built around a 6,000mAh battery, a 6.59-inch 120Hz AMOLED display, and gaming-focused controls and cooling. Its strengths made it an unusual gaming phone for its time; its trade-off was a large handset whose most demanding screen and performance settings could use more power. This is a historical review, not a claim that the phone remains a current-market recommendation.

What the ROG Phone II offered at launch

ASUS announced the ROG Phone II on July 23, 2019. Its central proposition was to combine flagship-class components of that period with features aimed specifically at mobile gaming: fast display response, shoulder controls, cooling hardware, stereo speakers, and a landscape-friendly port layout.

Feature ROG Phone II specification or claim Attribution
Processor and graphics Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus, with CPU clock speeds up to 2.96GHz; Adreno 640 graphics ASUS, 2019
Memory Up to 12GB RAM ASUS, 2019
Display 6.59-inch AMOLED, 120Hz refresh rate, 1ms response-time claim, 10-bit HDR ASUS, 2019
Color and touch claims Delta-E below 1 and 49ms touch latency ASUS, 2019; manufacturer claims
Battery and charging 6,000mAh battery; 30W ROG HyperCharge adapter; PD charging and Quick Charge 4.0 support ASUS, 2019
Gaming controls and audio AirTrigger II ultrasonic sensors, dual front-facing stereo speakers, and a 3.5mm audio jack ASUS, 2019

ASUS described the screen as the “world’s first 120Hz/1ms AMOLED 10-bit HDR 6.59-inch display.” That is launch-era vendor language, as are its listed response, color, and touch figures. GSMArena praised the panel’s accuracy, but its measured color values did not exactly match ASUS’s advertised Delta-E figure.

Is the ROG Phone II good for gaming?

For a 2019 phone, it had a well-integrated set of gaming features rather than relying on its processor alone. The Snapdragon 855 Plus and Adreno 640 were flagship components of their generation, while the 120Hz panel could make supported games and interface motion look smoother than on a conventional 60Hz display. That chipset is not a current top-tier performance benchmark, and a high refresh rate cannot make a game render at 120 frames per second if the game or hardware does not support it.

AirTrigger II controls

ASUS fitted ultrasonic sensors along the phone’s edge to act as shoulder controls when held in landscape orientation. The sensors supported tap and slide gestures, with vibration feedback; ASUS listed 20ms AirTrigger vibration latency. These controls can free thumbs for other on-screen actions, but they are not physical buttons, and their usefulness depends on game support and the player’s preferred control layout.

Cooling and landscape use

ASUS called its cooling system GameCool II and described it as a 3D vapor chamber. The company also offered the AeroActive Cooler II as an active-cooling accessory. Those design elements target sustained gaming, but the available evidence does not establish a universal frame-rate or temperature advantage across games and conditions.

The side USB-C charging connection and front-facing stereo speakers suit landscape play: a cable is less likely to sit at the bottom edge in that orientation, and sound comes from the front rather than being aimed away from the player. The 3.5mm jack gives another wired-audio option.

ASUS ROG Phone II battery life: what the evidence shows

The 6,000mAh battery gave the phone strong battery credentials for its time, but capacity alone does not determine runtime. A 120Hz display and demanding games can consume more power than lower-refresh or lighter use, so “Does 120Hz drain battery?” is best answered with a qualified yes: the higher refresh setting can reduce endurance, with the size of the effect depending on what is running and how the phone is configured.

Evidence from ASUS’s use account

In an ASUS ROG editorial about an outdoor Pokémon Go session, the author used T-Mobile LTE with Wi-Fi disabled and began at full charge. The author selected 60Hz because the game did not need a high refresh rate and left X Mode off to conserve charge. The account documents those settings, but does not provide a complete final runtime result, so it cannot support a precise claim about how many hours the phone lasts in that game.

Evidence from GSMArena’s lab review

GSMArena’s September 2019 review reported that it ran its standard battery routine multiple times and found refresh rate made a noticeable difference in screen-on results. It characterized the phone as one of its top battery performers in its 2019 office testing. For its battery tests, the outlet set brightness to 200 nits, corresponding to 85% of that review unit’s brightness slider; its separate maximum-auto brightness measurement reached 626 nits. Those are results from a particular historical test protocol, not guaranteed runtime or brightness figures for every unit.

Actual battery life depends on the game, brightness, refresh setting, mobile signal, software, and battery health. On a phone introduced in 2019, the condition of an individual used unit is especially relevant; the historical reviews do not measure the present-day condition of secondhand devices.

Charging: separate ASUS’s claim from a tested result

ASUS specified a 30W ROG HyperCharge adapter and said the phone could reach 4,000mAh of capacity from empty in 58 minutes. Treat that as ASUS’s claim, not an independent charge-time result. A charger’s rated output also does not mean the phone will draw that wattage continuously: GSMArena noted that the handset accepts a lower current than the bundled charger’s rated output and discussed the charger’s heat-management design.

ROG Phone II accessories

ASUS named the ROG Kunai Gamepad, TwinView Dock II, and AeroActive Cooler II among the accessory options associated with the phone. They extend the idea of a gaming-focused device, but the available information does not establish current stock, present pricing, or exact compatibility for every regional version.

  • ROG Kunai Gamepad: a controller accessory for a more console-like control approach.
  • TwinView Dock II: a dock accessory in ASUS’s ROG Phone II lineup.
  • AeroActive Cooler II: an active-cooling accessory intended to add to the phone’s cooling setup.

Before buying a used accessory, confirm its exact model, compatibility with the handset variant, physical condition, and whether all required parts are included. Do not assume that an old product listing reflects present availability or support.

Who the ROG Phone II suited—and what to check now

At launch, the phone made the most sense for someone who valued a high-refresh display, gaming controls, cooling features, and front-facing speakers enough to accept a gaming-first handset. Its large battery was an advantage, but using the fastest display setting and demanding games traded some endurance for fluidity. The same feature mix is less compelling for someone prioritizing compact size or ordinary everyday use over gaming-focused hardware.

For a secondhand purchase, the 2019 specification sheet is only part of the decision. Check the particular unit’s battery condition, the regional network variant, physical condition, and the software and security status it currently has. Current Android version, security patch status, current price, and present availability are not established by the launch-era and 2019 review evidence summarized here. Compare it with another phone using measured endurance at a stated refresh rate, sustained game performance and thermals, display quality, comfort, ports and controls, software status, and the condition and price of the actual unit.
