Verdict: The Asus ROG Phone 8 Pro is an excellent gaming flagship that is easier to use as an everyday phone than earlier ROG models. Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 performance, a 165Hz LTPO AMOLED display, IP68 protection and a useful telephoto camera make it unusually well-rounded. However, sustained heavy gaming produces significant heat, the 5,500mAh battery is smaller than its predecessor’s, camera processing is inconsistent, and Asus’s review-era software promise was shorter than the best-supported flagships.

How fast is Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for gaming?
For short, demanding workloads, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 makes the ROG Phone 8 Pro one of the fastest Android gaming phones of its generation. TechRadar recorded approximately 7,200 in Geekbench 6 multi-core. In its 20-minute 3DMark Solar Bay stress test, the phone scored 92.2%; attaching Asus’s AeroActive Cooler X raised that result to 98.3%.

The more important finding is thermal: TechRadar found the phone uncomfortably hot by the end of the test without the cooler. The optional AeroActive Cooler X can help sustained performance, but it adds cost, bulk and an accessory to carry.
#1 Best Overall
- Black, comes with Cooling Fan and Screen Protection, Charger, Charging Cable and Instruction Manual
What this means in real play
- Excellent headroom for high-resolution textures, high frame rates and demanding emulation.
- Short sessions can feel exceptionally smooth, especially when the 165Hz mode is supported.
- Long competitive or graphics-heavy sessions require sensible brightness, performance-mode and thermal expectations.
- The cooler is most relevant to extended play, not a prerequisite for ordinary gaming.
Display and design: a more practical ROG phone
The 6.78-inch FHD+ AMOLED/LTPO panel runs at up to 165Hz. Tech Advisor reports that the LTPO system can adapt between 1 and 120Hz depending on use, while 165Hz is available for compatible high-refresh gaming modes. Asus and review materials also cite up to 2,500 nits peak brightness; that is a stated specification, not an independent brightness measurement in the evidence available here.
Asus lists dimensions of 163.8 × 76.8 × 8.9mm, a 225g weight and IP68 water- and dust-resistance. The restrained black finish and slimmer bezels make the phone less conspicuous than older ROG designs. Tech Advisor reviewer Simon Chandler wrote that “The design of the ROG Phone 8 Pro makes it a more practical everyday phone than its predecessors.”

- Camera: Main Camera 50 MP image sensor - 1/1.56” large sensor size, F1.9 aperture, Gimbal OIS
There is a gaming-oriented compromise: the thinner top bezel accommodates a punch-hole selfie camera, so the phone no longer has the previous generation’s dual front-facing speaker arrangement. You gain a more conventional screen and stronger ingress protection, but lose some of the old model’s front-audio identity.
AniMe Vision on the Pro versions
Asus specifies a 341-element AniMe Vision rear mini-LED display on Pro versions. It is a distinctive notification and personalization feature rather than a second general-purpose screen; availability and exact behavior depend on the model and software.

Are the cameras good?
The camera system is substantially more versatile than the usual gaming-phone setup. Asus combines a 50MP main sensor with six-axis Hybrid Gimbal Stabilizer 3.0, a 13MP ultrawide with a free-form lens, and a 32MP telephoto offering 3x optical zoom and OIS. The front camera is 32MP.
TechRadar considered the main camera a major step forward for a gaming phone and welcomed the telephoto addition. It also found the ultrawide weaker in tone, detail and dynamic range, while image processing sometimes made inconsistent exposure decisions. That makes the ROG Phone 8 Pro capable for everyday photography, portraits and zoom shots, but not a replacement for the best camera-focused flagships.

Camera strengths and limits
- Main camera: the strongest all-rounder, with gimbal stabilization helping handheld video and movement.
- 3x telephoto: useful optical reach that older ROG phones often lacked.
- Ultrawide: convenient for architecture and groups, but the least consistent in image quality.
- Processing: exposure and HDR decisions can vary between scenes, so review important photos before deleting alternatives.
Battery life and charging
The 5,500mAh battery supports 65W wired and 15W wireless charging. That capacity is down from the ROG Phone 7’s 6,000mAh, a meaningful trade-off for a slimmer, more mainstream design. TechRadar described its review unit as lasting a full day, but not as class-leading among gaming phones. “All-day” is an observational review description, not a standardized runtime figure, so it should not be treated as a guaranteed number of screen hours.

Heavy 165Hz gaming, maximum brightness, mobile data and sustained high-performance modes will consume power faster than mixed everyday use. Wireless charging is convenient at a desk; 65W wired charging is the practical choice when returning quickly to a game.

ROG Phone 8 Pro vs Pro Edition
In Asus’s listed configuration, the Pro Edition doubles both memory and storage: 24GB RAM and 1TB versus 16GB and 512GB for the standard Pro.
| Model | RAM | Storage | What to verify locally |
|---|---|---|---|
| ROG Phone 8 Pro | 16GB | 512GB | Price, included accessories, warranty and regional network support |
| ROG Phone 8 Pro Edition | 24GB | 1TB | Price, included accessories, warranty and regional network support |
The extra RAM is unlikely to transform current game frame rates by itself; the 1TB capacity is the more tangible benefit for large game libraries, recordings and media. Do not assume the launch bundle or accessories are identical in every market.
Software support and long-term ownership
TechRadar’s review-era software section described Android 14 with ROG UI and a promise of at least two OS updates plus four years of security updates. That was the policy reported at review time, not a verified current support status. Before buying today, confirm Asus’s current update commitment, the phone’s installed Android version and its latest security-patch date for your region.
Price and buying checks
TechRadar reported launch pricing from $1,199 / £1,099, with shipping beginning January 16, 2024. Those are historical launch figures; current price, stock and availability were not established. Check the local price and exact seller on the day you buy.
- Confirm whether the listing is the 16GB/512GB Pro or 24GB/1TB Pro Edition.
- Check included AeroActive accessories rather than assuming a cooler is bundled.
- Verify warranty coverage, 5G band compatibility and return terms.
- Confirm the current Android version and security-update policy.
Who should buy the ROG Phone 8 Pro?
It is a strong choice if you want
- Top-tier Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 gaming performance.
- A high-refresh display that also works well as a conventional phone screen.
- IP68 protection and a more restrained design than earlier ROG models.
- A real telephoto camera rather than only wide and ultrawide lenses.
- Large storage, especially in the Pro Edition.
Consider alternatives if you prioritize
- Coolest sustained performance without an external accessory.
- The longest gaming endurance and largest possible battery.
- Consistently excellent ultrawide and computational photography.
- Longer or clearly documented software support.
- Front-facing stereo speakers above all else.
Bottom line
The ROG Phone 8 Pro broadens the gaming-phone formula without abandoning its performance focus. Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 power, a 165Hz LTPO AMOLED display, IP68 protection and a stabilized main camera make it a credible daily flagship. Its limits are equally clear: prolonged loads get hot, the battery shrank from the previous generation, the ultrawide camera trails camera-first phones, and software longevity needs current regional verification. Buy it for sustained gaming features and balanced hardware—not because it is the absolute best at every smartphone task.
