The ASUS ROG Phone 7 Ultimate is a specialist gaming phone built around fast, sustained Android performance: it combines a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, a 165Hz AMOLED display, physical AirTriggers, a 6,000mAh battery and an included AeroActive Cooler 7. It is a strong fit for serious mobile gamers, but its 246g weight, middling cameras and software friction make it a less convincing choice as an all-purpose flagship.
What the ROG Phone 7 Ultimate offers
ASUS’s Ultimate model pairs high-end 2023 Android hardware with gaming controls and cooling accessories. Its Storm White finish and rear ROG Vision display make the gaming identity conspicuous rather than understated. The central distinction from a conventional flagship is not simply the processor: ASUS builds the phone around long gaming sessions and gives the owner ways to control and cool it.
| Specification | ROG Phone 7 Ultimate |
|---|---|
| Processor and graphics | Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, up to 3.2GHz; Adreno 740 GPU (ASUS official specifications: ROG Phone 7 Ultimate specifications) |
| Memory and storage | 16GB LPDDR5X RAM and 512GB UFS 4.0 storage (ASUS official specifications: ROG Phone 7 Ultimate specifications) |
| Display | 6.78-inch Samsung AMOLED, 2448 × 1080, up to 165Hz (ASUS product page and specifications: ROG Phone 7 Ultimate; specifications) |
| Battery | 6,000mAh (ASUS product page and specifications: ROG Phone 7 Ultimate; specifications) |
| Operating system at launch | Android 13 (ASUS official specifications: ROG Phone 7 Ultimate specifications) |
| Weight and protection | 246g; IP54 dust and splash resistance (ASUS official specifications: ROG Phone 7 Ultimate specifications) |
ASUS said the display was twice as bright as the previous generation, a vendor claim aimed at improving outdoor visibility. That does not make it the sharpest screen for general media: the panel is Full HD+, and a high refresh rate matters most in games and interfaces that can use it.
How good is it for gaming?
Gaming is where the hardware makes the most sense. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, Adreno 740, 16GB of RAM and UFS 4.0 storage provide a powerful platform for demanding Android games. ASUS’s launch materials claim up to 15% faster CPU performance, 20% faster GPU performance and 15% better CPU power consumption compared with Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1; these are ASUS’s comparative claims, not independent measurements.

TechRadar reported high graphics settings and fast frame rates in demanding games, and said the phone sustained a full day of gaming without the cooler. Those are review-unit observations, not guarantees: results vary with the game, network, screen brightness and play style. The 165Hz panel is faster than the 120Hz norm cited by TechRadar, though the reviewer notes that few games can render at 165 frames per second. A high refresh ceiling therefore does not mean every game will visibly run at that rate.
AirTriggers provide physical-feeling shoulder control zones that can be mapped to on-screen actions, making supported games easier to control without covering the display with thumbs. ASUS’s Armoury Crate and Game Genie software add performance modes, recording and other gaming controls. The breadth of options is useful for people who tune their setup; it can feel intrusive to users who want a simpler Android interface.
What the AeroActive Cooler 7 adds
The AeroActive Cooler 7 is included with the Ultimate. When attached, it works with the Ultimate-only AeroActive Portal, which opens airflow into the phone’s chassis. The accessory adds a fan and thermoelectric cooling, extra controls and a stand; ASUS also describes its built-in subwoofer as part of a portable 2.1 sound system. This combination is unusual and helps distinguish the Ultimate from phones that rely only on passive cooling.

- Made from the high quality tempered-glass for maximum scratch protection and no residue when removed
- 2.5D rounded edge glass for comfort on the fingers and hand
- 9H hardness, 99.99% HD clarity, and maintains the original touch experience
- Hydrophobic and oleo-phobic coating to reduce sweat and reduce fingerprints
- Include 3 pcs tempered glass screen protectors
The cooler is most relevant for long, demanding sessions, not a requirement for ordinary play. It adds bulk and another accessory connection to manage. TechRadar also reported a cooler firmware-update loop at the time of its review, illustrating that the accessory’s benefits come with some software and setup friction. ASUS describes the cooling and audio features on its ROG Phone 7 Ultimate product page.
Screen, sound and battery for longer sessions
The 6.78-inch AMOLED screen offers a smooth, responsive gaming surface, and its 2448 × 1080 resolution is adequate for play. ASUS’s brightness claim may help outdoors, while the 165Hz refresh ceiling is a specialized advantage rather than a universal one: many games will not take full advantage of it. The phone also has symmetrical front-facing stereo speakers. The cooler’s subwoofer is an added feature when attached, not a replacement for evaluating the phone’s own speakers.
A 6,000mAh battery is a substantial capacity for a gaming phone. TechRadar reported at least eight hours of play in its testing and end-of-day endurance under heavy mixed use. Treat those results as one reviewer’s experience, not a runtime promise; a demanding game, high brightness or mobile network use can change endurance considerably.

Design, durability and everyday handling
The Storm White styling and rear ROG Vision display make the phone look like gaming hardware. TechRadar found it large and heavy but comfortable to hold. At 246g, it is noticeably substantial, particularly for one-handed use or carrying in a pocket. Its IP54 rating indicates dust protection and resistance to splashes; it is not rated for immersion in water.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor gaming-specific connectivity, the Ultimate also offers two USB ports and display output, according to TechRadar’s comparison. These extras can help with charging and accessory setups, but no complete compatibility list for peripherals is published. Check accessory compatibility before buying a cooler, controller or display adapter, and confirm that the particular game supports the controls you want to use.
Camera and software compromises
Cameras
The camera system is the clearest trade-off against mainstream flagships at a similar price. TechRadar describes the sensors as older, mid-range components, notes the absence of a zoom lens, and reports weaker detail, washed-out or blurry results in comparisons and weak selfies. If photography, versatile zoom or reliable selfies are central to your phone choice, a conventional flagship is a better match.

Software
Armoury Crate and Game Genie provide granular control over games, performance and recording, but TechRadar found the interface intrusive, easy to trigger accidentally and limited in useful home-screen customization. The reviewer initially encountered glitches and later said updates had removed the game-breaking problems. That experience is tied to the review period; it should not be taken as a guarantee of the phone’s current software condition or support status.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the ROG Phone 7 Ultimate worth its price?
It depends on whether you will use its gaming-specific features. The launch and review prices are historical reference points, not current retail quotes:

|---|---|---|
| ROG Phone 7 series starting MSRP | US$999.99 | ASUS USA launch announcement in 2023; this was the series starting MSRP, not a current quote or necessarily the Ultimate’s price (ASUS launch announcement) |
| ROG Phone 7 Ultimate review pricing | US$1,399 / £1,199.99 / AU$2,099 | TechRadar review pricing in 2023; not current prices (TechRadar review) |
At its review pricing, TechRadar judged value less favorably than design, display or performance, with reviewer scores of 3/5 for value and software, and 5/5 for design, display and performance. Those are that reviewer’s ratings, not standardized test results. TechRadar also noted that less expensive RedMagic models can offer similar core silicon, while the Ultimate differentiates itself with its cooler ecosystem, rear display, high-refresh panel, two USB ports and display output.

- 【Flexible TPU Material】Made from high-quality thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), offering a soft yet durable shield that resists scratches, smudges, and minor impacts.
- 【Slim & Lightweight】Ultra-thin profile maintains the original feel of your phone while providing reliable protection without the bulk.
- 【Enhanced Grip & Anti-Slip Design】Features textured sides or a matte finish to enhance grip and prevent accidental drops from slippery hands or surfaces.
- 【Minimalist Style】Clear or semi-transparent finish and black lets your phone’s design shine through, while subtle aesthetics suit both personal and professional settings.
Because the phone launched in 2023, availability and pricing in 2026 depend on the seller and stock. Check the seller, condition, warranty and included AeroActive Cooler 7 before purchasing; do not assume a listing includes the accessory just because it is the Ultimate model. Also verify that any cooler or other accessory is compatible with the specific handset and firmware.
Who should buy it?
- Consider it if you play demanding mobile games for extended periods and will use the AirTriggers, performance controls, 165Hz display or AeroActive cooling setup.
- Choose a mainstream flagship instead if camera quality, a lighter body, understated design or simpler everyday software matters more than gaming extras.
- Compare lower-cost gaming phones if you mainly want strong gaming performance and do not need the Ultimate’s included cooler and distinctive hardware features.
The useful comparison is not only processor speed. Weigh sustained gaming and thermal behavior, display and controls, battery needs, camera quality, software, size and protection, and the total price including accessories. The Ultimate earns its specialist appeal when those gaming additions will see regular use; otherwise, much of what makes it costly and distinctive may go unused.
