The ASUS ROG G751JY-DB72 was a formidable 1080p gaming laptop for its 2014–2015 generation, pairing a fourth-generation Core i7 with NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 980M. Its 17.3-inch Full HD IPS screen and strong gaming performance remain appealing on a desk, but its age, 4.2–4.8 kg reported weight, short tested battery life, and uncertain condition make a used unit a very specific purchase—not an easy recommendation for everyday portability.
What the G751JY-DB72 is
The DB72 is a configuration in ASUS’s large ROG G751JY gaming-notebook family. Notebookcheck’s exact-model record lists an Intel Core i7-4720HQ processor, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M graphics, a 17.3-inch 1920 × 1080 non-glossy display, and a listed weight of 4.8 kg (Notebookcheck). ASUS’s 2014 launch material describes the G751JY family with a GTX 980M carrying 4GB of GDDR5 and a 17.3-inch Full HD IPS panel, with M.2 PCIe SSD options (ASUS).
Do not assume every G751JY listing is the DB72 or shares its exact components. Family configurations varied, including different Core i7 processors and RAM or storage bundles. Check the specific unit’s model label and installed components rather than relying on a family-level listing.
How well does it game at 1080p?
At launch, the combination of a fourth-generation Core i7 and GTX 980M made this a high-performance machine for Full HD gaming. ASUS specified 4GB of GDDR5 graphics memory for the GTX 980M in its 2014 G751JY material. Laptop Mag reviewed a G751JY configuration with the GTX 980M 4GB, i7-4720HQ, 24GB RAM, a 256GB PCIe M.2 SSD, and a 1TB 7200-rpm hard drive (Laptop Mag). Computer Bild characterized its tested G751JY’s gaming performance as very high (Computer Bild).

That is a historical assessment, not a claim that the laptop will run every current game well. Performance depends on the game, settings, resolution, cooling condition, and the individual machine’s health. For a used purchase, treat the GTX 980M as a reason to consider it for older or less demanding 1080p games, not as a guarantee of modern high-settings performance.
Display and everyday experience
The 17.3-inch Full HD IPS screen is a major part of the G751JY’s appeal: it offers a large, non-glossy 1920 × 1080 workspace suited to gaming at the resolution its graphics hardware targeted. Computer Bild reported high image quality and an 11.1 ms image-change time in its 2015 test; its score was 2.2, rated “good” (Computer Bild).

TechRadar praised the laptop’s performance, usability, design, and quiet fans, while identifying heft, unimpressive battery life, and expense as drawbacks (TechRadar). The large chassis makes more sense as a desktop replacement than as a machine to carry routinely.
How heavy is it, and what is battery life like?
Published weights vary by review and configuration: Notebookcheck lists 4.8 kg for the exact DB72, Computer Bild reported 4.2 kg for its tested unit, and Laptop Mag lists 8.4 pounds for its reviewed configuration. These are different sources and configurations, not a single verified weight range for every G751JY; the power brick adds more carry weight.

Laptop Mag’s 2015 battery tests recorded 3 hours 17 minutes of continuous web browsing and 1 hour 36 minutes in a 1080p Metro: Last Light test. Those are results from that review’s test conditions, not a promise for a used laptop today. A decade-old battery may perform substantially worse, so check battery condition and whether the unit works reliably on AC power.
Can you upgrade the SSD or RAM?
Storage
ASUS advertised M.2 PCIe SSD options for the G751JY family, and Laptop Mag’s reviewed configuration paired a 256GB PCIe M.2 SSD with a 1TB hard drive. That supports considering an SSD replacement or compatible storage upgrade, but it does not establish the exact parts or layout in every DB72.

Memory
The reviewed configuration Laptop Mag tested had 24GB of RAM, but the available evidence here does not establish a universal DB72 memory ceiling or the module layout in every unit. Inspect the installed memory and confirm the exact model’s supported modules before ordering RAM.

It can make sense as an inexpensive, stationary gaming machine if the particular laptop is in good condition, its asking price reflects its age, and its performance suits the games you intend to play. Its strongest points are the historically powerful-for-its-era GTX 980M, the large Full HD IPS display, and the ability to use SSD-plus-hard-drive storage in at least some configurations.
Compare a candidate against other used gaming laptops on the factors that most affect ownership: 1080p performance in your games, screen condition, actual weight including charger, battery health, storage condition, upgrade options, cooling and fan noise, and total price. A weak battery, damaged display, failing storage, or poor cooling can erase the appeal of a strong original specification. Current used pricing, stock, warranty, battery condition, and driver support are not established by the historic reviews, so verify each directly before purchase.
