The ASUS ProArt PA278CFRV is a strong fit for creative and office work if you want accurate-looking wide-gamut color, a useful USB-C laptop dock and a sharper-than-60Hz desktop experience in one 27-inch display. Its main compromises are QHD rather than 4K detail, middling contrast and weak HDR performance. PCWorld’s October 2024 review found it well suited to SDR productivity and content creation, with occasional gaming as a bonus—not a specialist HDR or high-end gaming screen.

What the ASUS PA278CFRV offers

ASUS specifies a 27-inch IPS panel with 2560 × 1440 resolution, or QHD, and a 100Hz maximum refresh rate. The monitor combines wide-gamut modes and a factory-calibration claim with USB-C video, up to 96W power delivery, a multi-port hub and an adjustable stand. Those features make it a practical one-cable desk option for compatible laptops as well as a general-purpose desktop display.

ASUS claims 100% sRGB, 95% DCI-P3 and factory calibration to Delta E < 2, and lists the display as Calman Verified. These are manufacturer specifications, not a guarantee that every unit or color-critical workflow will need no calibration. In its 2024 review, PCWorld measured 97% DCI-P3 and 87% Adobe RGB and found good out-of-box accuracy, though it did not outperform some peers. ASUS specifications; PCWorld review.

Is QHD sharp enough for creative work?

At 27 inches, QHD gives you ample workspace for documents, timelines and common creative applications, but it does not have the fine-detail density of a 27-inch 4K display. PCWorld noted that small text and fine photographic details can look softer or more aliased than on 4K. If you routinely inspect high-resolution images at pixel level or want especially crisp text, 4K is the more appropriate comparison; QHD is a sensible trade-off if you value a lower pixel load and the PA278CFRV’s connectivity and refresh features.

Color performance: capable, but not a substitute for your workflow

The stated sRGB and DCI-P3 coverage supports a range of web, office and video work. PCWorld’s measured coverage—97% DCI-P3 and 87% Adobe RGB—suggests broad color capability, but Adobe RGB coverage may matter more for some print workflows. Its reviewer described the out-of-box accuracy as good while noting that some competing displays did better. Treat ASUS’s Delta E claim as a product specification, not independent proof that your specific unit is ready for every color-managed job.

PCWorld also advised disabling dynamic backlight dimming for more accurate imaging. That is the reviewer’s settings advice, not a hands-on recommendation from this article. For color-critical work, use the appropriate application and color-managed workflow and assess the individual display rather than assuming a specification eliminates calibration requirements.

Contrast and HDR are the main image-quality compromises

ASUS lists HDR10 support and VESA DisplayHDR 400 certification, but certification does not mean the monitor delivers compelling HDR image quality. PCWorld judged HDR performance poor for serious HDR viewing or editing and measured 329 nits of sustained HDR brightness in its 2024 testing. The same review measured a 1040:1 contrast ratio and described dark scenes as having a gray-silver cast. This makes the screen less suited to dark-room viewing, shadow-critical work or HDR mastering than its HDR labels alone might imply.

USB-C, ports and laptop-dock use

The USB-C connection supports DisplayPort Alt Mode and up to 96W Power Delivery according to ASUS. The monitor also provides one downstream USB-C port and three USB-A ports, letting a compatible laptop connect to the display and hub through USB-C. Actual video, charging and peripheral compatibility depend on the computer and connected devices; do not assume every laptop supports the same USB-C features or receives the full rated power.

100Hz refresh and everyday gaming

The 100Hz maximum refresh rate, with Adaptive-Sync/MediaSync support, can make desktop movement and compatible games feel smoother than a conventional 60Hz monitor. PCWorld regarded 100Hz Adaptive Sync as a strength and considered occasional gaming a versatility benefit. It is not positioned as a high-end gaming display: readers prioritizing competitive motion performance should compare monitors designed around higher refresh rates, while those who game casually can reasonably value the PA278CFRV’s mixed-use balance.

  • Quality Visuals: The KG271U 27" IPS monitor with 2560 x 1440 QHD resolution in a 16:9 aspect ratio presents stunning, high-quality images with excellent detail. The zero-frame design does away with the thick frames found on conventional monitors freeing up precious screen space.

Stand, adjustment and mounting

The included stand supports height adjustment up to 130 mm, tilt, swivel and portrait pivot. The display also has a 100 × 100 mm VESA mounting pattern for a compatible third-party arm. An arm is optional, not necessary to obtain useful positioning; the built-in stand already covers several common adjustments. ASUS specifications.

Who should buy the PA278CFRV?

  • Good fit: Creators and office users who want QHD workspace, broad sRGB/DCI-P3 coverage, USB-C laptop connectivity and a refresh rate above 60Hz, primarily for SDR work.
  • Consider another display: Buyers who need 4K detail, stronger contrast for dark scenes, convincing HDR performance or high-end gaming motion.
  • Check before committing: Confirm that your laptop supports USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode and the charging level you need, and compare current local pricing against similarly equipped QHD and 4K monitors.

PCWorld reviewer Matthew S. Smith summarized the monitor as offering “the color performance and connectivity required for professional productivity, content creation, and other work.” That is his assessment in the October 14, 2024 review, not an ASUS statement.

Price and availability

Prices vary by region and can change. PCWorld listed a $379 MSRP in its 2024 review; that is a historical review-page price, not a current quote.
