The ASUS Pro WS C621-64L SAGE/10G is a single-socket LGA-3647 workstation motherboard for Xeon W-3200 and Xeon Scalable processors. Its strongest case is expansion: pair it with a Xeon W-3200 CPU and it can provide four PCIe 3.0 x16 links, alongside 12 six-channel DDR4 ECC registered-memory slots, dual 10GbE and remote management. Its main compromise is storage connectivity: there is just one M.2 slot and no U.2 ports. It is most compelling for a used workstation build that needs many PCIe lanes, not for a new system that prioritizes modern I/O or multiple onboard NVMe drives.
What the board is—and who should consider it
This is a CEB-format (305 × 277 mm) workstation board built around Intel’s C621 chipset and one LGA-3647 Socket P. ASUS lists support for first- and second-generation Xeon Scalable processors as well as Xeon W-3200 CPUs. The platform dates to around 2019, so its appeal today is specialized: it can make sense when you need a high-core-count processor, substantial ECC memory and multiple full-bandwidth PCIe connections, and can source compatible parts at a price that fits the project.
For a rendering, simulation, capture or accelerator workstation, the board’s useful distinction is not simply that it has several expansion slots; it is that the processor determines how much bandwidth those slots can receive. The `/10G` model also integrates fast wired networking and server-style remote access. If your priorities are current-generation PCIe, several onboard NVMe drives or a new platform with straightforward parts availability, its age and storage layout are significant disadvantages.

How many GPUs or other PCIe cards can it run?
ASUS lists five PCIe slots. With a Xeon W-3200 processor, which provides 64 PCIe lanes, the platform can run four PCIe Gen3 x16 links. That makes four x16-connected GPUs or other accelerators a plausible target, subject to the cards’ dimensions, cooling, power demands and the chassis layout. A slot count alone does not guarantee that four large cards will physically fit or stay adequately cooled.

Standard Xeon Scalable CPUs expose 48 lanes, so some links can be reduced to x8. ASUS recommends choosing a W-3200 processor when full 64-lane connectivity is required. The trade-off is clear: a less expensive used Scalable CPU may suit a lighter expansion plan, while the W-3200 option is the better match when several cards need wide links.
What memory does it support?
The board has 12 DIMM slots arranged as six memory channels for its single CPU. ASUS specifies DDR4-2933 or DDR4-2666 ECC RDIMM and LRDIMM support, with a maximum capacity of 1,536GB. The maximum depends on the installed processor and compatible DIMMs; it is not a guarantee that any set of modules will reach that capacity or speed.

When buying used, confirm the CPU’s memory support and the exact DIMM type, capacity and speed before ordering. Registered and load-reduced DIMMs are not interchangeable with ordinary desktop unbuffered memory. Populate the channels in the configuration prescribed by the board manual to retain the expected channel operation.

ServeTheHome tested the board with a 28-core, 56-thread Intel Xeon W-3275 at 2.5GHz, six 32GB DDR4-2933 RDIMMs, an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER, a Samsung PM961 1TB SSD, Supermicro 4U cooling and Windows 10 Pro Workstation. In the review’s comparisons among W-3275 platforms, this board produced the strongest single-thread Cinebench R15 result of the three tested, but not the strongest multi-thread result. Geekbench also showed a strong single-thread showing, and the board beat the ASUS ROG Dominus Extreme in multi-thread results. SPECworkstation and Blender results were comparatively close across the tested boards. These are historical comparisons within that review, not a current ranking against newer systems. ServeTheHome also measured 12.32GB/s of PCIe bandwidth to the RTX 2080 SUPER, 0.08GB/s more than its tested Supermicro X11SPA-T. See ServeTheHome’s benchmark results.
Does it have 10GbE and remote management?
Yes. The SAGE/10G model has two Intel X550-AT2 10GbE RJ-45 ports. It also includes ASMB9-iKVM, which provides hardware status information and remote-console capability—useful when the workstation is deployed somewhere inconvenient to reach or needs administration without relying on its operating system.

- Intel LGA 4677 socket: Ready for Intel Xeon W-3400 & W-2400 processors
- CPU and memory overclocking: Supports for up to 2TB of ECC R-DIMM DDR5 memory (1DPC)
- Ultrafast connectivity: 7 PCIe 5.0 x16 slots, Dual Intel X710-AT2 10G LAN, 3 M.2, USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 Type-C and 2 SlimSAS
- Server-grade IPMI remote management: Hardware and software-level with a dedicated LAN port link to AST2600 BMC controller, plus a real-time monitoring and management software – ASUS Control Center Express
- Robust power and thermal design: 14+1+1 power stages, 8-pin and 6-pin PCIe power connectors, Massive VRM, chipset, M.2 heatsinks and M.2 backplates
Other rear I/O includes USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A and Type-C, four USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports, optical S/PDIF and audio connections. ServeTheHome reported that the Intel 10Gb/s drivers were not listed with the ordinary driver options on its test media and had to be installed manually from the DVD. For a contemporary installation, check that the required drivers are available in a usable form before setup rather than assuming the original disc is convenient.
What are the storage limitations?
The board provides one M.2 connector, supporting an M.2 drive up to 22110 length in either SATA mode or PCIe Gen3 x4 mode. In PCIe mode, the M.2 socket shares bandwidth with the PCIEX4_1 slot. It also has eight Intel C621 SATA ports and two ASMedia SATA ports, but no U.2 connectors.

That is a constrained arrangement for a workstation expected to use several high-speed SSDs. A PCIe storage adapter can add fast storage, but it occupies expansion space that might otherwise be used for a GPU, network card or other accelerator. Plan the slot layout around storage needs before choosing cards.

ServeTheHome reported a retail price of approximately $760 at the time of its 2019 review; that historical figure is not a current market price. Current stock and pricing vary, so check actual listings and compare the complete cost of the board, CPU, memory, cooling and any storage adapters rather than using the old review price as a buying target.
- Board condition and firmware: Ask about socket condition, BIOS revision and whether the board has been tested with the intended CPU.
- CPU and memory fit: Verify the processor model and stepping, then match ECC RDIMM or LRDIMM modules to the CPU and board requirements.
- Cooling and case: Confirm the LGA-3647 cooler fits the socket and chassis, and that the CEB board fits the case with room for its components and airflow.
- Power and card clearance: Check PSU capacity and cabling for the CPU and intended GPUs, plus enough physical space and cooling for all installed cards.
- Storage and slot plan: Account for the M.2/PCIEX4_1 bandwidth sharing and reserve slots for any additional storage controller.
- Warranty and returns: Establish what protection the seller offers; used-market coverage and condition are listing-specific.
Verdict
The Pro WS C621-64L SAGE/10G remains a capable option for a carefully planned Xeon W-3200 workstation that needs four PCIe Gen3 x16 links, large ECC memory capacity, dual 10GbE and remote management. Its age, single M.2 connector and lack of U.2 make it less attractive when storage density or a newer platform matters more than lane count. Buy it for a specific expansion-heavy workload, and only after confirming compatible parts, physical fit and the current used-market deal.
