The ASUS MG279Q is a 27-inch, 2560 × 1440 IPS gaming monitor with a maximum refresh rate of 144Hz. Its key caveat is that FreeSync does not cover the full 144Hz range: the manual specifies a 35–90Hz variable-refresh window, available only through DisplayPort or mini DisplayPort. That distinction matters if you are choosing it for adaptive sync rather than simply for a high-refresh picture.
What the ASUS MG279Q offers
The MG279Q is a legacy gaming monitor introduced in 2015. ASUS lists a 27-inch IPS panel at 2560 × 1440 resolution, or WQHD, with 109 pixels per inch and a maximum refresh rate of 144Hz. The higher pixel count gives more workspace than Full HD; ASUS said it offered up to 77% more on-screen desktop space than standard Full HD in its 2015 launch announcement.
ASUS advertises 100% sRGB color coverage and 178-degree horizontal and vertical viewing angles. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. Its stated 4ms gray-to-gray response time is also a manufacturer figure, not a guarantee of how quickly every transition appears in practice.

For connectivity, ASUS lists DisplayPort 1.2, mini DisplayPort 1.2, two HDMI/MHL ports, and two USB 3.0 ports. The stand supports height, tilt, swivel, and pivot adjustment; ASUS specifies 0–150mm of height adjustment, tilt from +20° to −5°, swivel from +60° to −60°, and a 90-degree clockwise pivot. The stand can be removed for VESA mounting.

Does the MG279Q support 144Hz over HDMI?
ASUS specifies 144Hz as the monitor’s maximum refresh rate, but the documentation supplied here does not establish a maximum refresh rate for its HDMI/MHL inputs. Do not assume HDMI will provide 144Hz: check the computer or console output, the monitor input, and the supported resolution and refresh rate for that particular connection.
The manual identifies DisplayPort and mini DisplayPort as the connections for FreeSync. If you want adaptive sync, use one of those ports and confirm your source device has a compatible output. HDMI/MHL is available for a picture, but it is not the FreeSync path specified in the manual.

What is the MG279Q FreeSync range?
The manual specifies FreeSync from 35Hz to 90Hz over DisplayPort or mini DisplayPort. The 144Hz maximum refresh rate is a separate capability: it does not mean FreeSync operates up to 144Hz. At frame rates within the stated range, FreeSync can vary the display refresh to match supported graphics output; outside it, the manual does not specify variable refresh.

The reviewer wrote: “While we didn’t find the 90Hz FreeSync limit to be a problem, we would rather see it implemented to the full 144Hz rate the monitor is capable of.” That is a historical reviewer’s assessment, not a statement about every user’s preferences.

How does it perform as a gaming monitor?
In that 2015 review, Eberle described the MG279Q as a high-quality IPS screen with strong color accuracy and contrast. The review’s favorable image-quality assessment should be read in its historical context; it does not establish how a particular used panel will look today, nor does it provide a current comparison against newer monitors.
ASUS also includes GamePlus crosshair and timer overlays, six GameVisual presets, Ultra Low Blue Light filters, and flicker-free technology. These are convenience features; they do not change the monitor’s native resolution or its documented FreeSync range.

Is the ASUS MG279Q worth buying used?
There is no verified current price, stock, warranty, or used-unit condition to support a general value verdict. The right choice depends on the listing price and the condition of the specific monitor, as well as how its 35–90Hz FreeSync range compares with alternatives available to you.

Compare resolution and pixel density, measured image quality, adaptive-sync range and supported inputs, response and overshoot, input lag, ergonomics, and the total cost of a unit in known condition. The MG279Q’s original 2015 comparison with the Acer XB270HU—including its then-current price difference—is historical and should not guide today’s purchase by itself.
