The ASUS Maximus V Formula was a premium, extended-ATX Z77 motherboard for Intel LGA1155 processors, with a strong overclocking toolkit, plentiful connectivity and enthusiast diagnostics. Its premium bought flexibility and tuning controls—not a major stock-speed gaming advantage over cheaper Z77 boards. In 2026, it makes the most sense for someone reusing an LGA1155 system or building a tested retro rig; it is a poor foundation for a new everyday PC.

What the Maximus V Formula is

The Maximus V Formula is an ASUS Republic of Gamers motherboard built around Intel’s Z77 chipset and LGA1155 socket. It supports second-generation Sandy Bridge and third-generation Ivy Bridge Intel Core processors, as well as supported Pentium and Celeron models. An i7-3770K is a natural pairing for an overclocking build, but check the ASUS CPU-support list for the exact CPU and minimum BIOS version before buying. A processor appearing on that list does not guarantee modern operating-system or peripheral support.

The board measures about 30.5 × 25.7 cm (12 × 10.1 inches), making it extended ATX rather than standard ATX. Check the case maker’s maximum motherboard width and cable-routing clearance; some cases advertised as ATX do not leave enough room along the board’s right edge.

“Maximus V Formula” names the motherboard. “Maximus V Formula/ThunderFX” is also used for the support and bundle family that includes an external ThunderFX USB audio device in some packages. Do not assume a used board includes that unit, its cables or accessories: confirm what is actually in the listing.

Specifications and feature layout

Feature What it offers
Socket and chipset LGA1155, Intel Z77; supported second- and third-generation Intel Core, Pentium and Celeron CPUs. Check ASUS’s CPU list for model and BIOS requirements.
Form factor Extended ATX, approximately 30.5 × 25.7 cm (12 × 10.1 inches).
Memory Four slots for unbuffered, non-ECC DDR3. ASUS documents selectable frequencies through DDR3-2400; the achievable speed depends on the CPU’s memory controller, DIMMs and tuning.
Expansion Three PCIe x16-length slots, one PCIe 2.0 x4 slot, three PCIe 2.0 slots and a mini-PCIe slot associated with the mPCIe Combo card. With a third-generation Core CPU, the primary graphics slots support PCIe 3.0.
Storage Two Intel SATA 6 Gb/s ports, two Intel SATA 3 Gb/s ports, four additional SATA 6 Gb/s ports via ASMedia, eSATA and an mSATA slot on the mPCIe Combo card. Intel Z77 RAID supports levels 0, 1, 5 and 10.
Networking Intel Gigabit Ethernet; the mPCIe Combo card provides 802.11a/b/g/n dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 3.0+HS/4.0.
Rear I/O Four USB 3.0 and four USB 2.0 ports, HDMI, DisplayPort, optical S/PDIF input and output, five analog audio jacks, Clear CMOS and ROG Connect controls.
Audio SupremeFX IV onboard 7.1-channel HD audio. Some packages add the separate ThunderFX USB audio device.

These specifications and the slot, storage and I/O details are documented in the ASUS Maximus V Formula manual. A physical x16-length slot is not necessarily wired for x16 bandwidth: ASUS documents x16 single-GPU operation, x8/x8 dual-GPU operation and x8/x4/x4 three-way CrossFireX operation. A thick modern graphics card can also cover lower slots or headers. The board’s multi-GPU modes are historical capabilities, not a practical modern gaming recommendation.

The four DDR3 slots support dual-channel memory. Use a matched kit and consult the memory QVL if stability is the priority. Four-DIMM setups and aggressive memory speeds can be harder to stabilize; a frequency selectable in UEFI is not a guarantee for every CPU and kit. High-speed DDR3 tuning is also not an automatic gaming upgrade.

Overclocking: the board’s main appeal

The Formula’s strongest case was its extensive tuning and diagnostic hardware. ASUS lists Extreme Tweaker controls, load-line calibration, ROG OC profiles, USB BIOS Flashback, LN2 and Slow modes, EZ Plug, Probelt voltage measurement points, a Q-Code display, onboard Start and Reset buttons, and GPU.DIMM Post. Its Extreme Engine Digi+ II power design is specified with eight CPU phases, four iGPU phases and two DRAM phases. ASUS’s Z77 overclocking guide describes the platform’s extra voltage controls and memory profiles.

  • Robust Power Solution: 22(110A)+2(90A)+1(90A)+2(80A) power stages with ProCool II power connectors, MicroFine alloy chokes and premium metallic capacitors

Those features make the board convenient for hands-on tuning and bench work, but they cannot guarantee a particular clock speed. A result depends on the individual CPU, cooling, airflow, BIOS, memory, voltage behavior and the board’s condition. ASUS’s LN2 Mode and extreme-voltage options are for specialist benchmarking, not ordinary gaming.

A cautious tuning sequence

  1. Check ASUS’s support archive and CPU list, then confirm that the installed BIOS supports your processor. Use the board’s documented BIOS update method and follow ASUS’s instructions.
  2. Load optimized defaults and establish that the system is stable at stock settings before changing clocks.
  3. Enable XMP only after the stock baseline is sound, then test memory stability.
  4. Increase the CPU multiplier gradually, changing one setting at a time. Avoid assuming an automatic overclock or extreme voltage is appropriate for daily use.
  5. Monitor temperatures and voltage during sustained workloads, and test with workloads relevant to the system’s intended use.
  6. If the board fails to POST, use Clear CMOS or the recovery features described in the manual. Revert the last change instead of stacking unexplained settings.

In one contemporary comparison, TechRadar reported about 4.6 GHz through automatic overclocking and approximately 4.8 GHz with manual voltage tuning on its test setup. Those are historical review results, not guaranteed or recommended settings for another CPU. The same review found little gaming benefit from the extra clock and noted that less expensive boards could deliver similar real-world performance. ASUS’s historical overclocking and benchmark material highlights specialist results—including a reported 16 GB memory result at 3320 MHz—not typical daily-use expectations. See TechRadar’s review for its test context.

Performance and value in its generation

The Maximus V Formula was a luxury enthusiast board, not a performance necessity. Its premium went toward tuning controls, diagnostics, power circuitry, E-ATX construction, expansion and onboard features. Contemporary testing found only a slight stock-speed advantage over a cheaper Z77 comparison board and questioned the extra cost for ordinary gaming. The clearest reasons to choose it were the enthusiast tools and layout, not a large frame-rate gain at stock settings.

Audio: SupremeFX IV and the ThunderFX bundle

SupremeFX IV is the motherboard’s onboard 7.1-channel audio implementation, with shielding, separated PCB treatment, audio capacitors and a headphone-amplifier feature. The ThunderFX is a separate USB device available with some bundle configurations, not a feature built into every Formula package. ASUS describes it with C-Media 6631 processing, up to 192 kHz/24-bit operation, a headphone amplifier specified for headphones up to 300 ohms, separate game, voice and master controls, noise cancellation, and PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 connectivity. Details appear in the ASUS ThunderFX overview and the motherboard manual.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a used purchase, establish that the ThunderFX unit itself is included and functional, and that its required cables are present. Old utilities or driver compatibility may limit its usefulness on a current operating system. Treat it as a bonus for a complete retro setup, not a reason by itself to pay a substantial premium over a working board.

Storage and connectivity in 2026

Storage choices

A SATA SSD is the low-risk way to make an existing system feel more responsive. The board also has an mSATA slot on the mPCIe Combo card, but mSATA is now a legacy format. A PCIe-to-NVMe adapter may work for storage, yet boot support depends on the adapter, firmware and operating-system setup; do not assume plug-and-play NVMe booting.

  • High-performance Networking: Onboard WiFi 6E,Bluetooth V5.2, Intel 2.5Gb Ethernet, and ASUS LANGaurd

The manual documents Intel Smart Response, Rapid Start and Smart Connect alongside Z77 RAID. Treat those as period features rather than reasons to choose the board for a modern storage build. RAID is not a backup: the manual warns that creating or deleting RAID volumes can destroy data. Back up important files before changing arrays or controller settings. The manual also states that the ASMedia SATA ports are for data hard drives and do not support ATAPI devices.

Networking and ports

The included wireless module is an 802.11a/b/g/n-era design with Bluetooth 3.0+HS/4.0, not Wi-Fi 5, Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 7. Its four rear USB 3.0 ports, Gigabit Ethernet, display outputs and audio connections were a generous package for the period, but they do not provide modern connectivity by current standards. A current PCIe wireless adapter is a more practical upgrade if newer Wi-Fi or Bluetooth is needed.

With a third-generation Intel Core processor, the board’s graphics slots support PCIe 3.0 as documented; processor choice matters. A current graphics card may operate in the system, but an older quad-core Ivy Bridge CPU can limit performance in CPU-heavy games. That is a platform balance issue, not necessarily a motherboard fault.

Buying a used board: what to verify

In 2026, condition, BIOS state and included parts matter more than the original ROG branding. ASUS still hosts a legacy support archive, but an archived support page is not a promise of active support for current operating systems or peripherals. No reliable current retail price is established here; compare the asking price with the cost of a tested alternative rather than relying on the board’s original premium.

Before paying

  • Ask for a successful POST into BIOS and a photo showing the correct CPU identification. Confirm the installed BIOS supports the intended processor.
  • Inspect the LGA1155 socket for bent pins. Check for corrosion, damaged or leaking capacitors, cracked heatsinks, missing VRM heatsink hardware and signs of rough handling.
  • Request proof that all four DIMM slots work and that the board can run memory in dual-channel mode.
  • Ask whether PCIe slots detect a test graphics card or other card, and whether Intel and ASMedia SATA ports have been checked.
  • Confirm Ethernet, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth, USB 3.0, audio output and microphone input work. Ask for a cold-boot test, not just a warm restart.
  • Confirm the listing includes the parts you need: I/O shield, mPCIe Combo card, Wi-Fi antenna, and, if advertised, ThunderFX and its cables. Do not assume ROG Connect accessories or original media are included.
  • Prefer a tested, returnable board over one sold as untested. A seller who cannot demonstrate basic operation leaves you carrying the risk.

Who should consider it—and who should pass

Buyer Assessment
Existing LGA1155 owner Potentially worthwhile if the board is tested, compatible with the CPU and substantially cheaper than replacing the platform.
Retro builder or collector An appealing feature-rich Z77 base, particularly when the original accessories and desired bundle hardware are present.
Overclocking hobbyist Interesting for its controls and diagnostics, provided the board is healthy and the project accounts for cooling, CPU variation and age.
Casual gamer A cheaper Z77 board can deliver similar stock performance; the Formula’s specialist features may go unused.
New-PC builder Not recommended as a primary platform: it is old hardware with DDR3, dated connectivity and uncertain used condition.
Audio buyer Do not pay much extra for ThunderFX without confirming the unit, cables and operation; a modern USB DAC or audio interface is a separate option.

Alternatives to the Maximus V Formula

A mainstream Z77 motherboard

If the goal is a daily-use i5-3570K or i7-3770K system rather than bench tuning, a less expensive Z77 board may provide the same broad stock-performance experience and sufficient multiplier overclocking. Choose the Formula when its controls, diagnostics or complete accessory set have real value to you.

ASUS Maximus V Extreme

The Maximus V Extreme sat higher in ASUS’s Z77 enthusiast range, with more specialist expansion and benchmarking features. It better suits an ambitious legacy benchmarking project than ordinary use, but scarcity, age and price can make it a difficult value. ASUS’s historical review roundup positions it above the Formula.

A modern platform

For a new build, a current platform offers newer CPU performance, DDR4 or DDR5 depending on the platform, newer PCIe and USB connectivity, easier NVMe booting, and current firmware and operating-system support. The Formula is best judged as a legacy component, not as a competitor to current motherboards.
