The Asus Eee PC 1005HA Seashell was a well-rounded 2009 netbook, especially in configurations with its six-cell battery: Laptop Mag measured nearly nine hours of runtime, while Asus advertised up to 10.5 hours. Its compact design, comfortable keyboard and basic office-and-web performance suited its era. Today, it makes sense mainly as a restoration or retro-computing device, not as a general-purpose laptop.
What the Asus Eee PC 1005HA is
The 1005HA is a family of small Asus netbooks introduced in 2009, not one uniform configuration. Its curved, glossy “Seashell” styling was a defining feature. The commonly reviewed US configuration launched at $389 with an Intel Atom N280 processor, 1 GB of RAM, Windows XP, a 160 GB hard drive and a six-cell battery. That launch price is historical, not a guide to current used-market value.
Contemporary reviews saw it as a practical, less expensive alternative to the slimmer Eee PC 1008HA. PCWorld described the 1005HA as a slightly thicker, slightly cheaper version of the 1008HA; Laptop Mag praised the rounded design while noting the glossy finish and audible fan. Laptop Mag’s 2009 review and PCWorld’s review provide period context.
Asus Eee PC 1005HA specifications
These specifications describe commonly reviewed or specifically documented configurations. They should not be assumed for every machine sold under the 1005HA name.

Battery life: the battery variant matters
For the N280 six-cell configuration, Asus advertised up to 10.5 hours, while Laptop Mag measured nearly nine hours in its test. The review figure is a test result, and the Asus figure is a manufacturer claim; neither guarantees the runtime of a used machine. Liliputing documents a 63 Wh six-cell battery in its reviewed unit.

Other 1005HA versions had different batteries and processors. iFixit identifies the 1005HAB as an N270 model with a three-cell battery rated around four hours, and the 1005HAP as an N280 model with a six-cell battery rated up to 10.5 hours. Treat those as variant descriptions and period ratings, not promises about present-day battery condition. See iFixit’s 1005HA reference.

Basic work in its era
PCWorld reported a WorldBench score of 38, compared with an average of about 35 at the time, and found it capable of handling office documents and web surfing. That was adequate performance for a 2009 netbook, not evidence that it will handle modern workloads well. The Atom N280, GMA 950 and 1 GB of RAM are severely limited by current standards; demanding multitasking, high-resolution media and heavyweight current software are poor fits.

Keyboard, chassis and everyday compromises
The approximately 92%-size keyboard was described as comfortable and roomy for a netbook. The curved chassis is attractive, but the glossy In Fusion Finish shows fingerprints readily. Reviewers also found the 1005HA thicker than the 1008HA, and Laptop Mag noted that the fan could become loud. Its port selection was useful for the period, including Ethernet, three USB ports and an SD-card reader.
1005HAB vs. 1005HAP: what to check
The suffix is a useful clue, but inspect the actual machine and its label rather than relying on a listing title. The documented distinction is:

Other regional or configuration differences existed, including variations in storage and webcam. Confirm the processor, battery and installed parts on the specific unit; do not assume every 1005HA has the most favorable configuration.
Can you replace the battery or hard drive?
Battery replacement
Replacement batteries are model-specific, and the different battery sizes make matching especially important. Search for a battery explicitly compatible with the Asus Eee PC 1005HA, then verify the exact submodel, voltage and connector against the laptop and the seller’s compatibility details. Do not infer present availability or quality from the computer’s original specifications.

Drive replacement
The documented configuration uses a 2.5-inch SATA II hard drive, so a compatible 2.5-inch SATA replacement drive or SSD is a plausible restoration option. Confirm fit and interface compatibility for the particular unit before buying; the specification alone does not establish that every drive will work without issue.
Is the Asus Eee PC 1005HA worth buying now?
It is best considered for retro-computing, restoration or a lightweight legacy-device project. Its original virtues—small size, a pleasant keyboard and long runtime when new with the six-cell battery—do not make its dated hardware suitable as a dependable modern everyday laptop.
Before paying, check the exact model suffix and processor, battery health, charger, hard-drive status, keyboard, hinges and screen. Compare the asking price with the cost of any needed replacement parts. Current resale prices, stock and seller quality vary and are not established by historical reviews, so check them at the time of purchase.
