The ASUS Chromebook CX9 (CX9400) packs an 11th-generation Intel processor, a light 14-inch design and unusually versatile ports into a premium Chromebook. Its drawbacks are just as important: battery life is less convincing than ASUS’s “up to 14 hours” claim suggests, and its original high-end price makes today’s value depend on the exact configuration and condition. With Google updates listed through June 2031, it may still suit buyers who find the right model at the right price.
What the ASUS Chromebook CX9 is
The CX9 is ASUS’s 2021 premium Chromebook, model CX9400. It was announced at CES 2021 and offered with 11th-generation Intel Core i3, i5 or i7 processors. Depending on configuration and region, it came with up to 16GB of LPDDR4X memory, SSD storage from 128GB to 512GB, and a 14-inch FHD or UHD display.
It was designed for mobile office use: the starting weight is 1.05 kg, while the broad port selection reduces reliance on adapters. The original range is now an older platform, so the main question is not whether its specifications were ambitious for a Chromebook, but whether a particular used or remaining-stock unit is priced appropriately.

What the CX9 does well
More connectivity than most Chromebooks
Two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports, HDMI and USB-A give the CX9 useful flexibility for office desks and travel. ASUS says the USB-C ports support data transfer up to 40 Gbps, USB-C Power Delivery and dual 4K display output. Those are manufacturer specifications, not a guarantee that every dock or display setup will work identically; confirm the peripherals and cables you plan to use.
A light chassis with a choice of screens
At a starting weight of 1.05 kg, the CX9 is easy to carry for a 14-inch laptop. The FHD options are the sensible choice for many work tasks, while the touch UHD panel offers higher resolution and a brighter stated rating. The UHD option’s 95% sRGB coverage is a specification, not evidence of professional color calibration.
High-end configurations for ChromeOS workloads
With Core i5 or i7 processors and up to 16GB of memory, the CX9 was equipped for heavier multitasking than entry-level Chromebooks. That does not automatically make an i7 model the best buy today: ChromeOS use, the memory and storage configuration, display choice, device condition and price matter more than the processor label alone.

Battery life is the CX9’s biggest caveat
ASUS advertised “up to 14 hours” of battery life, but that is a vendor estimate under a defined test method, not a promise of everyday runtime. Android Central’s 2022 review framed the trade-off as “Overwhelming power, underwhelming battery.” No independent standardized runtime figure is established here, so buyers should not treat the 14-hour claim as a dependable prediction for mixed real-world use.
For a used CX9, battery condition may matter more than the original estimate. Ask the seller about battery health or return rights, and test unplugged runtime during the return period if possible. The UHD touchscreen and higher-performance configurations may be appealing, but the available evidence does not establish a measured runtime comparison between CX9 variants.
How long will the CX9 receive updates?
Google’s Auto Update policy lists both Chromebook CX9 (CX9400CEA) and Chromebook Enterprise CX9 (CX9400CEA) with an Auto Update Expiration (AUE) of June 2031. Google’s listing is device-specific, so confirm the exact model in ChromeOS settings before buying. ASUS explains that Google software updates stop after a device reaches its AUE date.

That published date gives the listed model several years of support as of October 2026, but it is not a promise that every similarly named CX9400 SKU has the same status. If the exact model identifier differs, check it against Google’s policy rather than relying on the CX9 name alone.
Which CX9400 configuration should you buy?
Best balance: Core i5, 16GB RAM, FHD
For a buyer who wants the CX9’s strong connectivity and multitasking headroom without paying extra for maximum specifications, a Core i5 model with 16GB RAM and an FHD screen is the practical target. This is a configuration-based recommendation, not a result from comparative hands-on testing. Check that the actual listing includes the memory and screen you want.
Choose Core i7 and UHD only for a clear reason
The Core i7-1165G7 with a touch UHD display is the most compelling option if higher screen resolution is a priority and the price is attractive. Android Central reported a US launch price of $1,249.99 for a top configuration with Core i7-1165G7, 16GB RAM and UHD display in 2022. That is historical launch pricing, not a current market valuation; the older platform makes a steep premium harder to justify.

Be cautious with lower-memory or uncertain listings
Do not assume a Core i3 or 8GB model will behave like a 16GB configuration, or that a listing’s broad CX9400 label identifies its full specification. Verify CPU, RAM, storage, display type, battery condition, return policy and remaining update support before paying.
Is the ASUS Chromebook CX9 worth buying now?
The CX9 can make sense if you specifically need its light 14-inch body, Thunderbolt 4 connectivity, HDMI and USB-A, and you can buy the exact configuration at a price that reflects its age and battery uncertainty. The Core i5/16GB/FHD class is the most balanced target for general productivity; choose UHD or Core i7 only when those features are worth the added cost to you.

Chrome Unboxed’s 2022 review title, “All The Specs, None Of The Charm,” captures a critical impression, not a measured technical result. The CX9’s specification sheet is impressive, but it does not erase the battery caveat or make premium pricing automatically worthwhile. Current stock and street prices vary, so compare live listings and seller terms before deciding.
