You can add emoji reactions to an Astro blog by sending a validated reaction to an Astro Action and saving it in a site-wide Netlify Blobs store. This pattern suits a small feature with frequent reads and relatively few writes—not a high-contention counter: overlapping writes to the same Blobs key use last-write-wins behavior, so a basic read-then-increment can lose updates.
How the request and storage fit together
The browser should submit a post identifier and an emoji, not a storage key or a count. An Astro Action validates that input on the server, derives the Blobs key itself, and performs the write. The page can then read the saved data and display the reactions.
- Render controls: Show a fixed set of emoji buttons for each post.
- Submit: Call an Astro Action with the post identifier and selected emoji.
- Validate: Reject unknown posts and emoji on the server, even if the interface offers only approved choices.
- Persist: Build a key from the validated post identifier on the server and write the reaction data to a site-wide Blobs store.
- Display: Read stored data for the post and render the reaction totals or selections your feature supports.
Astro Actions provide typed handlers and input validation, and are available from client code, forms, or Astro scripts. Astro says an action is a public endpoint, so treat it like any other exposed API route and apply appropriate authorization checks. See Astro’s Actions guide.

Choose a reaction model before writing code
A reaction interface can mean different things: recording every submission, showing aggregate counts, or allowing one reaction per person with the ability to change or remove it. The storage key and update logic depend on that choice. For a small example, assume the site accepts reactions without an account and displays aggregate counts. This is easy to demonstrate, but it does not establish a person’s identity or prevent repeat submissions.

Keep identifiers constrained. Validate the post against a known set of published posts or another server-controlled source, and validate the emoji against a fixed allowlist. Never let the browser choose an arbitrary Blobs key. These checks prevent unintended key access and limit input to the data your feature expects.
What Netlify Blobs can—and cannot—guarantee
A site-wide Blobs store is suitable for JSON reaction data that should persist across production deploys. Netlify documents JSON operations such as setJSON and get with { type: 'json' }. The store can be accessed from functions and edge functions. See Netlify Blobs documentation.

Blobs is designed for frequent reads and infrequent writes. Netlify documents that if multiple writes target the same key, the last write wins. As a result, this seemingly simple sequence is unsafe as a concurrent counter: read a count, add one, then write the new count. If two requests read the same starting value, each can write the same incremented value, and one reaction is effectively lost.
Conditional writes such as onlyIfMatch and onlyIfNew are available for atomic conditional writes, but they do not make an ordinary read-modify-write operation atomic by themselves. A design would need to use those conditions correctly and handle conflicts. For complex concurrency control, queries, or relational data, Netlify recommends a database integration rather than treating Blobs as a transactional database.

Choose eventual or strong consistency
Blobs uses eventual consistency by default. Netlify’s documentation says updates and deletions are guaranteed to propagate to all edge locations within 60 seconds. That delay may be acceptable for a low-volume reaction feature where a visitor does not need every location to reflect a submission immediately.
Strong consistency is available for a store or read, with slower reads as the tradeoff. Consider it when immediate read-after-write behavior matters to the experience. Consistency selection does not change the need to design safely for concurrent writes to the same key.

Enable server-side handling on Netlify
Astro sites are static by default. A static page alone cannot execute a request-time reaction write; the deployed site needs server-capable handling for the Action. Astro’s Netlify adapter enables on-demand routes and Netlify platform features. Astro documents npx astro add netlify as the setup path. Review the current Astro Netlify adapter guide and Astro’s Netlify deployment guide for the supported deployment modes and configuration.
The adapter also configures Netlify Blobs for Astro session storage by default. If the project does not use sessions, Astro documents setting session: false. Session storage and a durable site-wide reaction dataset are separate concerns: do not assume that storing a session automatically stores reactions in the intended persistent store. The adapter documentation also describes a local Netlify Blobs server for astro dev.

Protect the public endpoint and set expectations
Because the Action is public, input validation is only one part of operating the feature. Decide whether repeated submissions are allowed, whether a visitor needs an identity, and what abuse prevention is appropriate for the site. Without identity or a duplicate-submission policy, the endpoint cannot reliably represent one vote per person. Astro exposes session context to actions, but its documentation says sessions are not supported in edge middleware; see Astro Sessions.
For a low-write-volume feature, Blobs can be a practical persistence layer when short propagation delays and last-write-wins writes are acceptable. If accurate aggregate counts must survive overlapping submissions, choose a storage design with an appropriate documented atomic-update or transactional guarantee instead of relying on a plain Blobs read-modify-write counter.
