AsteroidOS 2.0 is a major update to an open-source, Linux-based smartwatch operating system, announced on 17 February 2026. It adds always-on display, tilt-to-wake and palm-to-sleep gestures, a heart-rate app, initial step counting, and support for more watch models. But “supported” does not mean every feature works: compatibility depends on the exact watch, and AsteroidOS cannot run Android or Wear OS apps.

What AsteroidOS 2.0 adds

The AsteroidOS Team announced version 2.0 on 17 February 2026. The update combines new watch functions with interface changes and synchronization improvements. The project reports rendering, battery-life, and stability optimizations, but the announcement does not publish benchmark results.

  • Display and gestures: always-on display, tilt-to-wake, palm-to-sleep, and nightstand mode.
  • Health and controls: a heart-rate-monitor app, initial step-counting support, music-volume control, compass support, and Bluetooth HID and audio support.
  • Interface: a customizable QuickPanel, seven additional launcher styles, changes to watch-face and wallpaper presentation, and visual refinements.
  • Apps and localization: new flashlight and Diamonds game apps, timer and calculator refinements, and project-published support for 49 languages. The team says more than 20 languages were added since the previous release.
  • Synchronization: an updated Android client and initial AsteroidOS support in Gadgetbridge. The announcement also names Amazfish and Telescope clients.

These additions make the release more capable, but they do not make the OS a drop-in equivalent to Wear OS. The available functions still depend on both the watch hardware and the project’s support for that specific model.

Can my watch run AsteroidOS?

Possibly, but check the exact model number and codename in the AsteroidOS watch directory before deciding. A brand or product-family name is not enough: different versions of a watch can use different hardware, and the directory separates supported devices from experimental ones.

AsteroidOS 2.0’s announcement says support has been added since version 1.0 for Fossil Gen 4, Gen 5, and Gen 6; Huawei Watch and Watch 2; LG Watch W7; Moto 360 2015; MTK6580 watches; OPPO Watch; Polar M600; and several TicWatch families. The current directory includes other supported models as well. Check its live listing and the device-specific instructions because compatibility can change.

Supported does not mean every feature works

Use the watch directory to establish whether a device is supported or experimental, then inspect the project’s feature matrix and model page for the functions you need. The matrix labels individual hardware capabilities as good, bad, partial, unknown, or not present; those labels are not a guarantee that every software workflow has been tested.

For example, the TicWatch Pro page distinguishes three models: WF12096 is the TicWatch Pro 2018 (`catfish`), WF12106 is the TicWatch Pro 2020 (`catfish_ext`), and WF11018 is the cellular TicWatch Pro LTE (`catshark`). Dual-display support is partial. The secondary LCD can show time and steps when enabled from the command line, but the page says those modes cannot be enabled in the UI. GPS works on `catfish` and `catfish_ext`, but not on cellular `catshark`, whose GPS is integrated into an unsupported modem.

Fossil Gen 6 (`hoki`) illustrates why the feature matrix matters even for a supported watch: its page lists display, touch, Bluetooth, haptics, tilt-to-wake, always-on display, and heart-rate hardware as good, while microphone, blood oxygen, speaker, WLAN, and GPS are unsupported; USB and NFC are partial.

Experimental watches are a different risk

The project marks some devices experimental and says they are unsuitable for recommended everyday use. Its 2.0 announcement places Casio WSD-F10/F20, LG Watch Urbane 2, Moto 360 2014, Samsung Gear 2, and Samsung Gear Live in that category, citing device-specific concerns such as reports of bricking, missing features, instability or power-management problems, and display issues. Sony Smartwatch 3 was demoted because hardware problems remained unresolved.

Do not treat a successful boot or an experimental listing as proof that a watch is reliable for daily use. The project’s porting-status page also lists failed and impossible ports. Linux support alone does not guarantee a viable port; some low-end MediaTek watches cannot run a Linux kernel, according to the project.

What the OS does—and does not—replace

AsteroidOS is Linux, not Android. It cannot run Android or Wear OS applications, and the project FAQ says an app store does not yet exist. Apps contributed to the project can be installed manually. The FAQ also identifies call answering from the watch and using cellular-capable watches as phones as functions it does not currently provide.

A phone is not required for basic use. Synchronization clients add convenience, with the project listing AsteroidOS Sync and Gadgetbridge for Android and Amazfish for Ubuntu Touch. The FAQ says there is no iPhone app, although notifications can be shared through its documented method. Check the AsteroidOS FAQ and client documentation for current pairing details.

On privacy, the project says AsteroidOS collects no tracking data, requires no account, and that the default installation cannot connect to the internet unless the user explicitly configures connectivity. This is the project’s description, not an independent security audit.

How to try it without permanently replacing Wear OS

Installation is device-specific and requires an unlocked bootloader plus computer-side ADB and Fastboot steps. For many watches, the lower-commitment option is a temporary installation or dual boot: AsteroidOS can be tried without replacing Wear OS, but it must be booted manually after each restart. Follow the instructions for the exact model in the official watch directory; do not apply one model’s procedure to another.

  1. Confirm the exact device. Match the model number and codename to the directory entry, then review its feature matrix and installation page.
  2. Prepare for bootloader unlocking. On the TicWatch Pro instructions, unlocking can erase Wear OS user data and may void the warranty. Back up anything you need before proceeding.
  3. Choose temporary or permanent installation. Temporary installation is the reversible trial path where the device instructions provide it, but requires manually booting AsteroidOS after each restart. A real installation replaces Wear OS.
  4. Keep a recovery path. The project advises backing up the original system before replacement and warns recovery may not be possible without that backup. Its TicWatch Pro instructions also warn not to relock the bootloader while AsteroidOS is installed.

These cautions are model-specific: consult the instructions for your watch for the exact sequence, available boot options, and recovery details.

Battery life and performance claims

The project homepage describes “up to 48 hours of autonomy,” while its FAQ gives a broad “1-4 days” range when comparing Linux smartwatch hardware with low-power microcontroller watches. Neither figure is presented with a standardized test protocol or a model-by-model AsteroidOS 2.0 result. The release announcement’s performance and battery-life improvements likewise include no benchmark figures, so treat these as project-level claims rather than guaranteed runtimes or independently measured gains.

Who should consider AsteroidOS 2.0?

AsteroidOS 2.0 is most relevant to someone who wants an open-source alternative, has a watch listed as supported, and is comfortable checking feature gaps and following device-specific bootloader instructions. It is a poor fit if your decision depends on Android or Wear OS apps, a mature app store, watch-based call answering, or a cellular watch functioning as a phone.

If you do not already own compatible hardware, start by checking the exact device listing rather than buying based on a family name. For instance, the official guide identifies TicWatch Pro 2020 model WF12106 as supported under codename `catfish_ext`; that does not establish compatibility for every TicWatch Pro variant. Verify the listing, condition, and model number before acquiring any watch.
