The ASRock X870E Challenger WiFi White is a well-equipped ATX AM5 motherboard with USB4, 5GbE, Wi-Fi 7 and four M.2 sockets. It is worth considering if those connections and its white finish fit your build, but the decision is less straightforward if you prioritize BIOS polish or predictable memory-profile compatibility: Tom’s Hardware reported those as concerns in its review, alongside mostly average-to-below-average test results.
What is the ASRock X870E Challenger WiFi White?
It is an ATX motherboard for AMD Socket AM5 processors. ASRock lists support for Ryzen 9000, 8000 and 7000 Series CPUs. Its white heatsinks and board finish suit a light-colored build, while the feature set centers on fast USB, wired networking and multiple M.2 sockets. ASRock notes that availability may vary by market, so the exact White WiFi model may not be sold everywhere. ASRock product specifications
What connectivity and expansion do you get?
The headline connections are two rear USB4 Type-C ports, 5GbE Ethernet and Wi-Fi 7. The board also has a front-panel USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 Type-C header for a compatible case. ASRock lists Bluetooth 5.4 alongside Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be); it specifies Windows 11 support for the Wi-Fi module and says 6 GHz operation depends on regional regulations and software updates.

For storage and add-in cards, the specification includes four M.2 sockets and two SATA3 ports. Lane availability and operating mode are not identical with every supported CPU, so treat the table as a map of the board’s listed slots—not a guarantee that every slot runs at its maximum specification in every build.

| Connection or slot | ASRock’s listed specification | Practical qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Primary graphics slot | One PCIe 5.0 x16 slot | Available bandwidth depends on the installed CPU. |
| Secondary x16-length slot | One PCIe 3.0 slot, up to x2 | It is physically x16-length, but its listed electrical bandwidth is up to x2. |
| Short expansion slot | One PCIe 3.0 x1 slot | Check the CPU-specific slot configuration in ASRock’s specifications. |
| Fastest M.2 socket | One PCIe 5.0 x4 M.2 | CPU family can affect the socket’s generation or width. |
| Other M.2 sockets | Three PCIe 4.0 x4 M.2 | Verify the chosen CPU’s lane behavior before planning all drives. |
| SATA storage | Two SATA3 ports | Useful for compatible SATA drives in addition to M.2 devices. |
The rear USB4 ports can also carry video from supported CPU integrated graphics, according to Tom’s Hardware. That capability depends on the processor and display setup; it does not replace a discrete graphics card when your build requires one. The board further provides BIOS Flashback and Clear CMOS buttons, seven fan headers, four ARGB headers and a four-LED POST status checker, as described in the review. Tom’s Hardware review
How much memory can it support?
ASRock specifies four dual-channel DDR5 DIMM slots, a maximum capacity of 256 GB and memory speeds up to DDR5-8200+ (OC). The speed figure is an overclocked specification, not a promise that every CPU and kit will reach it. ASRock says supported profiles vary by configuration and directs buyers to its memory Qualified Vendor List (QVL).

That QVL advice matters in light of Tom’s Hardware’s test experience. The outlet reported that its Kingston memory kit was not officially supported and failed after the reviewer enabled its XMP/DOCP profile. The review then used a secondary DDR5-6000 kit for testing and suggested QVL-listed memory could perform better with adjusted secondary and tertiary timings. This describes the review sample and test setup, not a universal failure of Kingston kits or all XMP/DOCP profiles. Check the QVL for your processor and memory kit before buying, and be prepared to troubleshoot a profile that does not train reliably.

Tom’s Hardware praised the board’s power delivery and extensive fast USB connectivity. The reviewer described it as one of the best-equipped X870E options under $230, while also reporting average-to-below-average results across most tests. Those performance findings reflect the outlet’s test system and methods; they are not a guarantee of results in another build. Tom’s Hardware benchmark and final analysis

The review’s main drawbacks were a BIOS it said needed a refresh, lack of AI features and Wi-Fi 7 limited to 160 MHz channel width. The board’s Wi-Fi 7 label therefore does not mean it offers the widest Wi-Fi 7 channel capability. If wireless performance is central to your build, compare channel width as well as Wi-Fi generation, and factor in your router, region and software support.
Tom’s Hardware also characterized the design as no-frills: it has no integrated RGB lighting, though it includes ARGB headers for compatible lighting. The white appearance and heatsinks give it a clean look, but the styling is restrained rather than showy.

Who should consider this motherboard?
It may suit you if
- You want a white AM5 ATX board with two rear USB4 ports, 5GbE and Wi-Fi 7 on the specification sheet.
- You need several M.2 sockets and understand that CPU choice can affect lane availability or operating modes.
- You are comfortable checking the memory QVL and troubleshooting an overclocked memory profile if needed.
- You prefer a restrained board design and do not need integrated RGB lighting.
Look elsewhere or compare carefully if
- You want the broadest Wi-Fi 7 channel support; this board’s reviewed wireless implementation is 160 MHz.
- You value polished BIOS behavior or AI features above its connectivity mix.
- You need predictable memory-profile compatibility without checking a QVL.
- Your work depends on consistently strong benchmark performance; the review found mostly average-to-below-average results, so compare independent testing relevant to your workload.
What should you compare before buying?
Do not judge it only by the X870E name or a headline feature count. Compare the total price and availability in your region, then check the specific capabilities your build will use.
- USB: Count rear ports by type and speed, and check whether the board has the front Type-C header your case needs.
- Networking: Compare Ethernet speed and Wi-Fi generation plus channel width, not just the Wi-Fi number.
- Storage and lanes: Check M.2 generations, heatsinks, SATA connections and CPU-dependent lane sharing or limits.
- Memory and firmware: Review QVL coverage for your CPU and kit, and compare BIOS update and recovery features.
- Other build priorities: Compare audio codec, VRM design and temperatures under comparable test loads, layout, color and local stock.

Is it worth the money?
It can be a compelling choice when its USB4, 5GbE, storage expansion and white styling match your needs at a competitive local price. Its strongest appeal is the combination of connections and expansion, not evidence of across-the-board benchmark leadership. Weigh that against the BIOS and Wi-Fi channel-width caveats, and select memory from the QVL where possible.
Tom’s Hardware displayed an Amazon listing at $229.99 when its review page was consulted, as well as listings from Walmart, Newegg and Best Buy. That is a dated retailer snapshot, not a current or recurring price. Confirm the exact X870E Challenger WiFi White SKU, seller, regional availability and current total price before ordering; the review’s product naming can also refer to a non-White model.
