The ASRock X870E Challenger WiFi is an ATX AM5 motherboard with two rear USB4 ports, 5 GbE, Wi-Fi 7, and four M.2 sockets—an unusually broad feature set for a lower-priced X870E board. Its best fit is a Ryzen 9000 or 7000 build that can use the primary Gen5 M.2 slot and fast rear I/O. Check the CPU-dependent expansion speeds, Windows 11 requirement for Wi-Fi 7, memory compatibility, and current price before buying.
What the X870E Challenger WiFi offers
ASRock lists the board for AMD Ryzen 9000, 8000, and 7000 desktop processors on the AM5 socket. It uses the X870E chipset and an ATX layout. ASRock sells black and white versions; Hardware Busters says the variants share the same specifications, but confirm the exact color and SKU when shopping.
The standout combination is four M.2 sockets, two rear USB4 Type-C ports, 5 GbE Ethernet, and Wi-Fi 7. The trade-offs are more specific: only two SATA ports, a secondary long PCIe slot limited to PCIe 3.0 x2, Wi-Fi 7 support restricted to Windows 11, and different expansion speeds depending on the processor.
Which Ryzen CPUs and PCIe speeds does it support?
The CPU generation changes the bandwidth available to the graphics slot and primary M.2 socket. The long upper graphics slot is physically x16, but it does not run at the same speed with every supported processor.

| Processor family | Primary graphics slot | Primary M.2 socket |
|---|---|---|
| Ryzen 9000 | PCIe 5.0 x16 | PCIe 5.0 x4 |
| Ryzen 7000 | PCIe 5.0 x16 | PCIe 5.0 x4 |
| Ryzen 8000 Phoenix 1 | PCIe 4.0 x8 | PCIe 4.0 x4 |
| Ryzen 8000 Phoenix 2 | PCIe 4.0 x4 | PCIe 4.0 x4 |
These are ASRock’s specified link modes; the table describes interface capability, not a promise of a particular real-world transfer rate. The second full-length slot is PCIe 3.0 x2, not a second x16-bandwidth slot. There is also one PCIe 3.0 x1 slot. If you plan to install multiple cards, confirm that those link widths suit your devices.
ASRock specifies a 20+2+1-phase design and 110A SPS for VCore and SoC. Tom’s Hardware praised the board’s power delivery in its review, but that assessment is not a substitute for matching a specific processor and workload to a board.
How many M.2 and SATA drives can it use?
There are four M.2 sockets in total. The primary socket supports a Gen5 x4 drive with Ryzen 9000 or 7000, and Gen4 x4 with Ryzen 8000. The other three are Gen4 x4 sockets for M.2 2280 drives. The board also has two SATA 6 Gb/s connectors.
ASRock lists RAID 0, 1, and 10 for M.2 NVMe devices, and RAID 0 and 1 for SATA devices. The official specifications cited here do not provide a complete lane-sharing table. If your build will populate several M.2 sockets alongside add-in cards, check the current manual and BIOS documentation for the exact configuration before assembly.

- Blazing-Fast Storage: Provides two PCIe Gen5x4 M.2 slots and two PCIe Gen4x4 M.2 slots for the world's fastest NVMe SSDs, plus SATA support.
What memory does it support?
The board has four dual-channel DDR5 DIMM slots and supports up to 256 GB. ASRock lists speeds up to DDR5-8200+, but that is an overclocked specification, not a guarantee that any processor and memory kit will reach that speed. Results depend on the kit, CPU memory controller, settings, and BIOS.
Tom’s Hardware reported that its Kingston memory kit did not work after enabling its XMP/DOCP profile; the outlet then used a secondary DDR5-6000 kit for its testing. Check ASRock’s memory QVL for your exact kit and verify the BIOS and profile settings rather than assuming a listed maximum speed will work automatically.
Does it have USB4, Wi-Fi 7, and 5 GbE?
Yes. The rear I/O includes two USB4 Type-C ports rated up to 40 Gb/s, five USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports rated up to 10 Gb/s, and 5 GbE LAN. A front-panel USB-C header supports up to 20 Gb/s, if your case has a compatible port and cable.

ASRock lists 160 MHz channel bandwidth on 6 GHz. Wi-Fi 7 driver support is for Windows 11 only, and 6 GHz availability depends on regional regulations and updates. Your operating system, router or access point, country, and drivers all affect what features are usable; the specification does not guarantee a particular throughput.

Using the motherboard’s display outputs
ASRock specifies HDMI 2.1 output up to 4K at 120 Hz and USB4 display support up to 8K at 30 Hz. USB4 display output depends on the processor’s embedded graphics. These are motherboard display options, not a description of the output capabilities of a separate graphics card.

In a review published September 28, 2026, Tom’s Hardware called the board one of the best-equipped X870E options under $230 in its verdict. It praised the power delivery, fast USB, and flexible I/O shield, while listing BIOS refinement, the absence of AI features, and 160 MHz Wi-Fi 7 among its drawbacks.
Tom’s Hardware also reported average-to-below-average results in most of its performance tests. The outlet connected that outcome to the memory configuration used after its Kingston kit failed with its XMP/DOCP profile. Treat those results as findings from that review’s test setup, not a prediction for every build. Hardware Busters’ July 16, 2026 review likewise highlighted the combination of USB4, 5 GbE, Wi-Fi 7, and X870E connectivity.
Is the X870E Challenger WiFi good value?
Its value depends on whether you will use the connections it provides and what it costs when you buy. Two USB4 ports, 5 GbE, Wi-Fi 7, and four M.2 sockets make it feature-rich, while two SATA ports and the PCIe 3.0 x2 secondary long slot may be limiting for builds centered on several SATA drives or bandwidth-hungry add-in cards.
The prices shown in reviews are historical snapshots, not verified current quotes. Tom’s Hardware displayed $229.99 at Amazon on its September 28, 2026 review page; Hardware Busters cited $279.99 in its July 16, 2026 review. Check the live listing, seller, stock, and exact variant before comparing value. ASRock cautions that the model may not be available in every region.
Quick Recap
Who should consider it?
- A good match: A Ryzen 9000 or 7000 builder who wants a Gen5 primary M.2 socket, multiple Gen4 M.2 options, USB4, and fast wired networking.
- Check carefully: A buyer using Ryzen 8000, a high-speed DDR5 kit, or Wi-Fi 7 features. Confirm the CPU’s link widths, QVL status, Windows version, and regional 6 GHz availability.
- Look for a different fit if needed: A build requiring more than two SATA drives or a secondary add-in card slot with more than PCIe 3.0 x2 bandwidth.
