The ASRock Rack SORANOD8-2L2T is a server-first, single-socket SP6 motherboard for AMD EPYC 8005 and 8004 processors. Its strongest case is for a storage server or appliance that can use its PCIe expansion, configurable SATA routing, integrated 10GbE and IPMI. Before buying, check two fit issues: the board measures 12 × 10 inches, wider than standard ATX, and its power connections differ from a conventional desktop motherboard.

What the SORANOD8-2L2T is—and who it suits

ASRock Rack lists the SORANOD8-2L2T as an ATX-like board measuring 12 × 10 inches, built around one AMD SP6 processor socket. It supports EPYC 8005 and 8004 CPUs. The feature set is aimed at server builders: IPMI remote management, multiple PCIe slots, two M.2 sockets, two MCIO connectors, and four Ethernet ports. ASRock Rack’s product specifications identify the board’s dimensions, socket generations, and major connections.

It is most compelling when you need a lot of expansion or storage flexibility on one board. A workstation builder should weigh that against the server-oriented layout, especially the limited USB connectivity and unusual power arrangement. ServeTheHome’s September 24, 2026 review characterizes the board as an update to the predecessor’s general approach, adding EPYC 8005 support and changing some connectivity. That is the reviewer’s assessment, not a manufacturer guarantee. Read the ServeTheHome review.

Does it support EPYC 8005, and what memory does it take?

Yes. ASRock Rack specifies support for AMD EPYC 8005 and 8004 processors. The board has eight 288-pin DDR5 DIMM slots and supports registered DIMMs (RDIMM) and 3DS registered DIMMs (RDIMM-3DS). ServeTheHome reports a maximum capacity of up to 2TB and a DDR5-5200 ceiling for the board. These are the review’s configuration figures; the exact supported speed and capacity depend on the CPU and DIMM population.

#1 Best Overall
32GB DDR5-5600 ECC RDIMM Compatible with ASRock Rack SORANOD8-2L2T
  • EXACT-MATCH UPGRADE — 32GB DDR5-5600 (PC5-44800), 1Rx4 Registered ECC, 1.1V, CL46, 288-pin. The precise rank, voltage, and timing your system's memory controller expects, so it is recognized at full capacity and runs at its rated speed.
  • VERIFIED FITMENT — Compatible with the ASRock Rack SORANOD8-2L2T Motherboard. The 288-pin Registered (RDIMM) form factor this motherboard requires — not a UDIMM, LRDIMM or SODIMM. Spec-matched to the board's memory-population rules.
  • ENTERPRISE STABILITY — Registered (buffered) architecture offloads the memory controller so every slot runs fully populated at full capacity, while ECC catches and corrects single-bit errors on the fly — stopping silent data corruption and unplanned reboots before they reach production.
  • CHECK YOUR CONFIG — Server and motherboard memory support varies by model and processor. Consult your system manual for supported capacities, approved DIMM population order, and installation steps before purchase.
  • LIFETIME SUPPORT — Backed by a lifetime replacement warranty and free US-based technical support. Researched, matched, and compatibility-tested by NEMIX RAM, a US-based server memory specialist since 1993, and backed by a lifetime warranty.

The eight slots are arranged in what ServeTheHome describes as an unusual 2DPC-like layout across SP6’s six memory channels: two channels have positions for a second DIMM. That arrangement favors memory capacity, while a one-DIMM-per-channel configuration can allow higher memory speed. Confirm the supported CPU and memory configuration against ASRock Rack’s current CPU support list and memory QVL before ordering. The manufacturer product page lists the memory type and slot count; ServeTheHome provides the capacity, speed, and layout discussion.

Expansion and storage: PCIe, M.2, MCIO, and SATA

The board offers five PCIe slots: four Gen5 x16 slots and one open-ended Gen5 x8 slot, according to ServeTheHome. It also has two PCIe 5.0 x4 M.2 sockets, each supporting 22110 or 2280 drives. The exact lane routing and any conflicts should be checked in the board documentation for the configuration you plan to use.

For SATA storage, the key is that some connectors are configurable rather than dedicated to a single purpose. Each of the two MCIO x8 connectors can carry PCIe Gen5 x8 or be configured for eight SATA 6Gbps connections. Used in SATA mode, the two connectors can therefore support up to 16 SATA drives, subject to the required cabling and configuration. Separately, the top PCIe slot can be routed to 16 SATA connections with the ASRock Rack 1U2G-RB1U2SL-G4 riser. Treat these as alternative routing options to plan around, not as a promise that every lane or connector can serve every purpose simultaneously. ServeTheHome details the routing options in its review.

Networking and remote management

There are two 10GbE RJ45 ports and two 1GbE RJ45 ports, plus a dedicated IPMI port. ASRock Rack specifies the Ethernet port counts; ServeTheHome identifies the 10GbE controller as Intel X710-AT2 and the 1GbE controllers as Intel i210. For a storage server or appliance, having both faster and standard-speed ports onboard can reduce the need for a separate network card.

The board uses an ASPEED AST2600 BMC. ServeTheHome reports an HTML5 IPMI interface with remote media mounting and says the interface appears to be based on MegaRAC SP-X. Those are observations about the reviewed software interface, not a promise that every firmware version will present identical options.

Will it fit your case and power supply?

Check the motherboard footprint

At 12 × 10 inches, the board is wider than standard ATX. A case described as supporting ATX may not have enough space. Check the chassis manufacturer’s explicit motherboard dimensions and standoff layout before ordering; do not rely on the ATX label alone. ServeTheHome flags this as a potential fit problem in cases that accept standard ATX but no larger boards.

Check the power connections

The board uses three ATX12V connectors and replaces the standard 24-pin ATX motherboard connector with a 4-pin micro-fit signaling connector. ServeTheHome says an adapter for a conventional ATX PSU is included, but builders should verify the required PSU connectors and what is included with the current package documentation. The arrangement can be less convenient to source and connect than a typical desktop board.

What the layout means for workstations and storage servers

The rear panel has only two USB-A ports; a header supports two additional front USB ports. Video output is VGA from the BMC, and the board has six 6-pin fan headers. ServeTheHome notes that workstation users who need more USB connectivity may need a PCIe expansion card.

That trade-off looks different in a storage system. The MCIO-to-SATA options, M.2 sockets, five PCIe slots, integrated Ethernet, and IPMI can support a storage-heavy or remotely managed build without requiring a separate card for each basic function. Whether the board is a good fit comes down to the configuration priorities:

  • Memory: favor the board when capacity and eight RDIMM slots matter more than maximizing memory speed in a one-DIMM-per-channel setup.
  • Drive mix: map out how many NVMe, PCIe, and SATA devices you need before assigning the M.2, MCIO, and top-slot routes.
  • Networking: the onboard 10GbE and 1GbE may cover a server’s needs; verify port speed and card needs against your network.
  • Chassis and power: confirm the 12 × 10-inch footprint, standoffs, PSU connectors, and adapter details before purchase.
  • Workstation peripherals: account for the two rear USB-A ports and whether a USB expansion card is acceptable.

What ServeTheHome’s performance findings do—and do not—show

ServeTheHome reports that its comparative benchmark testing placed the platform in a similar performance range to an HPE ProLiant in the tested configurations. Its SPEC CPU2026 results are labeled estimates, generated with LLVM 22 and -O3; the review explicitly says they are not comparable to official results on the SPEC website. Numeric chart values are not available in the review material summarized here, so there is no basis for quoting a performance percentage or treating the comparison as a general ranking of all EPYC systems.

The review’s conclusion emphasizes the board’s additional DIMM position, Gen5 slots, M.2 and MCIO connections, onboard Ethernet, and appeal for storage servers and appliances. It also describes lower platform power relative to larger sockets; that is the reviewer’s platform-level judgment, not a measured power figure for every build.
