Asian shares were mixed to higher on Monday, October 5, 2026, after weaker-than-expected U.S. jobs data eased investor concern that strong growth would fuel inflation and prompt another Federal Reserve rate hike. Market pricing for an October hike fell sharply, but the Fed had not announced a decision. The session’s gains were uneven, and the direction had reversed for several major indexes by October 7.

What happened in Asian markets on October 5?

In Monday morning trading, Japan’s Nikkei 225 rose 2.5% to 70,037.61. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 added 0.1% to 8,691.90, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng was unchanged at 23,971.55. Shanghai and South Korea’s markets were closed for holidays. These are snapshots reported during that session, not current index quotes. Associated Press via Yahoo Finance, October 5, 2026

The gains were therefore not uniform across the region: Japan led, Australia edged up, and Hong Kong was flat. Holiday closures and thin trading also meant fewer regional markets were open to set the day’s tone, Reuters reported. Reuters via Fidelity, October 5, 2026

Why did softer U.S. jobs data support stocks?

The catalyst was a U.S. employment update reported on Friday, October 2. Employers added 29,000 more jobs than they cut in the month covered by the report, down from net hiring of 133,000 in August. The Associated Press said the result was weaker than economists had expected. Associated Press, October 2, 2026

Investors saw the softer result as reducing the risk that a very strong economy would keep inflation elevated and lead the Fed to raise rates again. That change in expectations can help risk appetite: if investors anticipate less upward pressure on borrowing costs, stocks may look more attractive. It is a market interpretation of the data, not proof that inflation has been defeated or a guarantee of future market performance.

What did the market-implied Fed odds mean?

As reported by the Associated Press, CME Group market pricing put the probability of an October Fed rate hike below 23%, down from 64% a week earlier. Those percentages describe investors’ implied expectations at the time; they are not Fed guidance, an official forecast, or a policy decision. The Federal Reserve had not announced that it would either raise or hold rates. Associated Press, October 2, 2026

Rank #2

Adam Schickling, senior economist at Vanguard, said the report strengthened the case for the Fed to remain patient. He added that the labor market had not deteriorated sharply but showed little evidence of meaningful strengthening, giving policymakers reason to wait for more data. The point was uncertainty: one jobs report could shift expectations without settling the Fed’s next move. Associated Press, October 2, 2026

Was the October 5 rally a lasting regional trend?

No. The October 5 market direction was already out of date by October 7. In that later session, the Nikkei and South Korea’s Kospi each fell 0.9%, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng dropped 0.6%, and Taiwan’s Taiex lost 0.2%; Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 edged up 0.1%. The Associated Press also cited earnings optimism, higher oil prices, and inflation and bond-market pressures as factors in the mixed trading. Associated Press, October 7, 2026

For readers interpreting the headline, the accurate takeaway is specific to the October 5 session: softer U.S. employment data helped reduce market concern about another near-term Fed hike, while Asian index moves varied by market. It does not establish what the Fed would decide or predict what stocks would do next.
