Sujeet Kalkal won the men’s freestyle 65kg gold at the 2026 Asian Games, beating Tajikistan’s Abdulmazhid Kudiev 10-9 after trailing 2-9. The October 2 final turned on an eight-point unanswered run, according to India Today; Hindustan Times also reports the comeback and final score.
How Kalkal turned the final around
Hindustan Times reports that Kudiev built a 9-2 lead in the first period through takedowns and pushouts. Kalkal rallied in the second period to finish ahead 10-9. India Today describes his decisive scoring stretch as eight unanswered points. The reports establish the score and sequence, but do not provide a full bout sheet or further scoring detail.
His route to the 65kg final
Quarterfinal: technical-superiority win
Kalkal defeated Iran’s Abbas Ebrahimzadehsavadkouhi in the quarterfinal. Hindustan Times reports that Kalkal won by technical superiority without conceding a point.

In the semifinal, Kalkal faced Japan’s Kotaro Kiyooka, identified by both reports as the reigning Olympic champion. The match ended 3-3, with Kalkal advancing on criteria after scoring the bigger move, according to India Today.

What the gold means for India
India Today called Kalkal’s victory India’s first wrestling gold of the 2026 Asian Games and his first major senior title. It also makes him the third Indian to win the Asian Games men’s freestyle 65kg title, following Yogeshwar Dutt in 2014 and Bajrang Punia in 2018.
Kalkal’s background
India Today identifies Kalkal as 23 and from Haryana. The report says flooding and travel disruption prevented him from reaching the 2024 Asian Olympic qualifier before weigh-in began. It also credits him with U23 World Championships gold in 2025 and Asian Championships gold in 2026; those career details are reported by India Today.
