Rifle shooter Rudrankksh Patil says shooting is important to India’s effort to collect medals, and his three-medal return at the 2026 Asian Games illustrates why he believes the sport deserves attention. Hindustan Times reports that Patil won two team silvers and an individual bronze in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. His comments make a case for shooting’s value; the interview does not compare its medal totals with those of other sports.
What medals did Rudrankksh Patil win?
Hindustan Times reports that the 22-year-old earned three medals at the 2026 Asian Games:
- Silver in the men’s 10m air-rifle team event.
- Silver in the men’s 50m three-position team event.
- Bronze in the individual 10m air-rifle event.
Patil told the publication he was proud to deliver three medals, compared with one at the previous edition. That comparison is his account as reported in the interview.
Why does Patil say shooting matters to India’s medal tally?
Patil’s argument is that India is strong in rifle shooting and that success in the discipline can help the country collect medals. He said, “People have now started to notice how important it is for our country and how good we are at it.”

He also described India as “one of the most powerful countries around the world [in rifle shooting]” and said it had won “all the major medals which are available in the sport.” Those are Patil’s broad assessments, not independently established rankings in the interview.
The interview provides no medal-by-sport totals, share of India’s overall tally, or comparison with other disciplines. It therefore supports reporting what Patil thinks about shooting’s importance, but not a numerical claim that shooting contributes more medals than another sport.

What changes to training and support did he suggest?
An Olympic-focused training centre
Patil said India has high-level ranges designated as National Centres of Excellence (NCOEs), which he said have been developed by states. He argued that a dedicated Olympic training centre could complement those facilities: “I feel like we are missing an Olympic range, an Olympic centre, which are only meant for training for Olympics.” This is his assessment of infrastructure, rather than an independently audited account of facilities.
More domestic equipment supply
He said Indian shooters depend heavily on equipment from outside the country, including weapons, ammunition and pellets. The interview presents this as Patil’s observation; it does not quantify imports or identify particular suppliers.

Incentives and career opportunities
Patil argued that higher cash incentives could encourage people to take up sport, saying, “Interest in sports can only be increased by a couple of things. Of course, high cash incentives can be a lot of motivation for many people.” He also discussed central-level job allocations and the limited earning years athletes may have during their peak. The interview does not establish the current availability or scope of employment schemes.

Hindustan Times’ October 3, 2026 interview reports Patil’s three Asian Games medals and his views on the role of shooting, training facilities, equipment dependence and athlete support. It does not supply official event-result records or a discipline-by-discipline medal comparison. The appropriate takeaway is that Patil sees rifle shooting as an important contributor to India’s medal prospects, not that the interview proves its relative contribution against other sports.
