Japanese and Korean automakers are gaining ground in the U.S. market, while Chinese manufacturers are building global scale and expanding in markets such as Europe and Mexico. Those are related but distinct shifts: Cox Automotive’s latest U.S. share figures are forecasts, and U.S. rules and trade barriers mean they do not signal an imminent wave of Chinese-brand sales in America.
What the latest U.S. market figures show
Cox Automotive’s September 24, 2026 release forecast that Asian brands would account for more than half of U.S. new-vehicle sales in the third quarter, for a second consecutive quarter. It projected the Detroit Three—General Motors, Ford and Stellantis—at just over 36%, which Cox described as a record-low share. These are forecasts, not final full-quarter market-share results.
The distinction matters: “Asian” in this U.S. market story principally means established Japanese and Korean automakers. The figures do not mean Chinese marques already hold a large share of U.S. showroom sales.

Cox attributed the shift in part to consumers moving toward hybrids and passenger cars, segments where Asian manufacturers have strong product coverage. Higher gasoline prices may also support demand for efficient models, though the available figures do not establish fuel costs as the sole cause of the market-share change.

Reuters reported on October 1 that Toyota sold 633,223 vehicles in the U.S. in the third quarter, a marginal year-over-year increase, while GM remained the top U.S. seller despite a sales decline. Toyota’s Corolla hybrid sales rose nearly 36% year over year to 13,003. Reuters also reported that regular gasoline averaged $4.43 per gallon in September 2026, compared with $3.20 a year earlier, citing AAA. That is a time-specific national figure, not a measure of every driver’s costs.
Affordability is another pressure point. Cox’s average new-vehicle transaction price was $50,089 in August 2026, up 1.9% year over year, according to Reuters. That broad average does not compare equivalent models, but it helps explain why fuel economy and the availability of smaller vehicles matter to buyers.

Cox forecast Hyundai Motor Group at 511,421 U.S. sales in Q3 2026, ahead of Ford at 504,172. Those estimates were published before complete quarter results. The larger point is the breadth of the competition: Japanese and Korean brands are contesting more than one segment, while Detroit’s U.S. business remains heavily exposed to trucks and SUVs.
How much stronger Chinese automakers have become globally
Chinese manufacturers’ rise is visible in global sales, not just in forecasts of future U.S. competition. Axios reported in 2026 on Center for Automotive Research analysis of GlobalData that Chinese automakers’ share of global vehicle sales increased from 14% in 2020 to 25% in 2025, approaching Japan’s 26%. The same analysis put U.S. automakers at 12% of global sales. These are global shares, not U.S. market shares.

Axios also reported that Chinese brands’ sales in Western Europe had tripled since 2020 and that China had an estimated 15 million vehicles of excess production capacity in 2025. The figures point to both export momentum and pressure to find customers outside China.
Cost and technology are part of the challenge, but they are not the whole explanation. The Center for Automotive Research account summarized by Axios points to supply chains, manufacturing scale, development speed, intense domestic competition and supportive government policy. In January 2026, Associated Press quoted CSIS’s Ilaria Mazzocco saying Chinese automakers were increasingly successful in markets important to U.S. manufacturers, and AutoForecast Solutions’ Sam Fiorani describing their ability to make small and midsize cars at reasonable prices.

AP also cited expert estimates of $10,000–$20,000 vehicle prices in some contexts, compared with U.S. average new-vehicle pricing near $50,000. Those are broad, attributed comparisons—not like-for-like prices for vehicles of the same size, equipment, market and date.

Global competitiveness does not automatically translate into U.S. access. The U.S. Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security has a final rule restricting certain imports and sales of connected vehicles and related hardware or software with a sufficient connection to China or Russia. The rule includes prohibitions involving vehicle connectivity-system hardware and connected-vehicle or automated-driving software, and addresses manufacturers with a sufficient China or Russia nexus, including in some cases vehicles made in the United States.

Whether a particular model, supplier arrangement or manufacturing plan falls within the rule depends on its definitions, scope and phase-in. It is not enough to assume that local assembly alone resolves the issue; a company evaluating a specific plan needs to assess the operative rule and the relevant technical and corporate connections.
Trade duties are a separate barrier. A March 2025 presidential proclamation set a 25% tariff on covered imported automobiles beginning April 3, 2025, subject to its terms and exceptions. That rate alone does not establish the total duty on a particular vehicle: applicable tariff schedules and later measures can affect the result. A model-specific landed-price calculation requires checking the current treatment for that vehicle.
AP reported in January 2026 that Canada’s tariff decision could offer Chinese automakers an easier North American route. That possibility is not evidence of U.S. market access. The U.S. connected-vehicle rule and U.S. import duties have their own scope and must be evaluated independently.
