A Google AI Overview reportedly confused Cape Breton musician Ashley MacIsaac with another man who shares his surname and falsely identified MacIsaac as a sex offender. The mistaken summary came to the attention of the Sipekne’katik First Nation, which cancelled a performance and later apologized. MacIsaac sued Google in 2026, but the case was discontinued before the allegations were tested in court.
Why was Ashley MacIsaac’s performance cancelled?
In December 2025, MacIsaac learned that a Google AI Overview was identifying him as a sex offender. Reporting by Global News and Futurism said the summary drew on online material about a different man with the same surname.

The Sipekne’katik First Nation, north of Halifax, cancelled a performance after the false information came to its attention. The First Nation later apologized to MacIsaac. Its spokesperson said in a letter shared with The Globe and Mail and reproduced by Futurism: “We deeply regret the harm this error caused to your reputation, your livelihood, and your sense of personal safety.” The letter also said: “It is important to us to state clearly that this situation was the result of mistaken identity caused by an AI error, not a reflection of who you are.”

What did Google say about the AI Overview?
Google Canada spokesperson Wendy Manton told Global News that the feature changes frequently and that Google uses examples of misinterpretation or missing context to improve its systems. She said: “When issues arise — like if our features misinterpret web content or miss some context — we use those examples to improve our systems, and may take action under our policies.”
That statement describes Google’s general approach; it is not an admission of responsibility for MacIsaac’s case. The cited reporting does not establish what specific product or policy action, if any, Google took in response to this incident.

Did Ashley MacIsaac sue Google?
Yes. Global News reported in May 2026 that MacIsaac had filed a civil lawsuit in Ontario in February. The suit alleged that the AI summary attributed several convictions and registry status to him. Those were claims in a lawsuit, not findings by a court. MacIsaac was quoted by The Globe and Mail, with the remark reproduced by Futurism: “Google screwed up, and it put me in a dangerous situation.”
What happened to the lawsuit?
On Aug. 19, 2026, CityNews, in a report from The Canadian Press, said a notice of discontinuance had been filed on July 29 to end the lawsuit. The report said the claims had not been tested in court and gave no further explanation for the discontinuance.

Accordingly, the cited reports establish neither a settlement nor an admission of fault, and they do not establish a judicial ruling clearing or finding liability. The distinction matters: the lawsuit’s allegations remained untested when the case ended.
What this incident shows about AI-generated search summaries
The reported error illustrates a specific risk: when people share a surname, an AI-generated summary may combine information about different individuals and present the result as though it applies to one person. Here, reporting connected that mistake to a real-world consequence—the cancellation of a performance—but does not measure how many people saw the summary or establish wider financial effects.

MacIsaac urged people to check their online presence, saying: “People should be aware that they should check their online presence to see if someone else’s name comes in.” That is a practical caution, not evidence that monitoring can prevent an AI summary error.

Google provides a Search Help reporting form. Its guidance distinguishes reporting routes for certain content or product-policy issues from legal reporting routes. The form is general guidance: it does not establish which route MacIsaac used or guarantee that a particular AI Overview will be removed.
