Xbox has reportedly begun to grow again—but the October 2026 claim is about first-party games, not proof that the entire Xbox business is back in growth. Windows Central reported remarks from an internal Xbox town hall and later clarified that the chart Asha Sharma discussed measured first-party growth: games Xbox owns and publishes. The report does not include the chart or define its metric and baseline.
What Asha Sharma reportedly said
On October 6, 2026, Windows Central reported that Sharma told Xbox employees the company had started to return to growth after reaching an all-time low. The outlet said it had received the town-hall transcript and verified it with trusted sources. It later updated its report to clarify that the growth chart concerned first-party growth—not all of Xbox.
Windows Central transcribed Sharma as saying: “We’re making the right decisions to reinvest in the business, after an all time low, we’ve started to return to growth, more than 2 to 3 times what we were, and we expect that continue.” The wording is Sharma’s as reported by Windows Central; the transcript was not published as an official Xbox document.

What “growth” refers to—and what it does not
Windows Central’s clarification narrows the claim to Xbox’s first-party growth: performance related to games Xbox owns and publishes. That is a meaningful improvement claim, but it is not equivalent to saying that every part of Xbox is growing.
- Reported improvement: first-party growth, as described by Sharma at the town hall.
- Not established by that report: company-wide Xbox growth, Microsoft Gaming revenue growth, console sales growth, or growth in player engagement.
- Not independently interpretable from the public report: the magnitude and timing behind “more than 2 to 3 times,” because the chart and its underlying measures are not available.
Sharma also reportedly said positive Xbox brand sentiment had risen 30% over the prior year. The report does not specify the survey provider, sample, question wording, geography, or methodology. That figure should therefore be attributed to her reported remarks, not described as a verified poll result.

How the October remarks fit the 2027 growth target
The town-hall report followed a July 2026 message in which Sharma forecast that Xbox would return to growth in 2027. Those are different claims: the July statement was a forward-looking target for the broader business, while the October report described an early improvement in first-party growth.

| Date and source | What was said | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| July 6, 2026 — Xbox Wire | Sharma said Xbox was unhealthy and forecast a return to growth in 2027. | An official employee message setting a future expectation, not a report that the target had already been met. |
| July 29, 2026 — quoted by Windows Central | Sharma said more than 200 million new players came to Xbox and its games in FY26, but the business did not grow with its audience; she expected growth by the end of FY27. | A management statement about audience and a growth expectation. The public statement does not define the scope of “players.” |
| October 6, 2026 — Windows Central | Sharma reportedly described a first-party growth chart and said growth had started after an all-time low. | An account of internal remarks about first-party performance, not a public earnings release confirming company-wide growth. |
In her July message, Sharma said Game Pass, the multiplatform strategy, and a broader content portfolio had not grown at the expected pace, while Xbox’s core business had weakened. That context helps explain why a first-party improvement would not, by itself, demonstrate that the broader turnaround was complete.

Why the figures need careful attribution
The strength of the available evidence differs by claim. Xbox Wire published Sharma’s July message directly. The October town-hall remarks and chart, by contrast, are available through Windows Central’s reporting; Insider Gaming also summarized the claims but said its transcript source was Windows Central. That makes Insider Gaming a contemporaneous account, not a separate verification of the underlying chart.
Sharma’s July message also described margins as 3–10 times lower than comparable platform and publishing businesses and said the studio portfolio lost 64 cents per dollar invested in a typical year. Those are company statements in her restructuring rationale; the Xbox Wire post does not name the comparators or provide calculation details. They should not be treated as independently established industry benchmarks.

Similarly, the reported 200 million-plus new players figure is Sharma’s statement as quoted by Windows Central, and the article notes that the term’s scope is unclear. None of these figures supplies the missing first-party chart methodology.

A public financial report or additional disclosure would be needed to determine whether the October improvement translated into sustained growth across Xbox. The most useful clarifications would be the metric behind the chart, its comparison period and baseline, and whether the measure covers only first-party games or other business lines as well.

Until those details are public, the careful reading is limited but useful: Xbox’s leader reportedly described an early return to growth in first-party games, while the broader 2027 growth target remains a separate management expectation.
