Asahi’s July 17, 2026 update lists five approximate groups whose personal information may have been exposed, including about 1.525 million customer-service contacts. The figures are category estimates, not a verified count of two million unique people. Asahi said investigators found no evidence that personal information stored on data-center servers was transferred externally, but the company kept information in scope where exposure could not be ruled out.
How many people may have been affected?
In its July 17, 2026 update, Asahi Group Holdings revised its estimates of people or contacts whose information may have been exposed. The five category counts add up to about 2.289 million category entries, but Asahi did not report that sum as a count of unique individuals. People may appear in more than one category, and the notice does not establish the extent of any overlap.

These are approximate category counts published by Asahi, not a list of confirmed exposed records. Asahi also cautioned that not every field listed for a category is present in every person’s record.
Was my data exposed in the Asahi data breach?
The public category estimates do not identify specific people, and they do not establish that every person in a listed category had information taken. Asahi said it would notify people whose information may have been exposed in due course. If you have a relationship with one of the listed businesses or groups, watch for communications from Asahi and follow the instructions in any notice you receive.

Asahi reported on July 17, 2026 that it had confirmed no secondary damage, including unauthorized use of information, as of that date. That is a status update, not a guarantee that misuse can never occur. The public disclosure does not provide a way to check an individual’s status by name.
What information did the Asahi breach expose?
The July update lists possible exposure of names and, depending on the group, contact details, dates of birth, gender, and other information. The range differs by category; for example, the customer-service group’s listed fields include addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses, while family members’ listed fields are name, date of birth, and gender.

Asahi said credit-card information is not included in the potential-exposure scope. Separately, its February 18, 2026 report described particular categories as confirmed exposed: 5,117 employee or retiree records and 110,396 business-partner-related records. Those are confirmed-exposure figures from that February report, distinct from the broader, revised potential-exposure estimates published in July. Asahi said the 5,117 employee or retiree figure was included within the corresponding potential-exposure count.

Asahi identified a ransomware attack after detecting a system disruption at about 7:00 a.m. Japan Standard Time on September 29, 2025. The company’s later account said the attacker entered through network equipment at a Group site about ten days earlier, though investigators could not determine the exact entry time. Asahi said the intruder used compromised accounts to obtain administrative access and search the internal network before ransomware encrypted servers and some PCs.

Asahi disconnected the network and isolated its data center at about 11:00 a.m. on September 29. On October 3, 2025, it confirmed the ransomware attack and said it had found traces suggesting possible unauthorized data transfer. Its subsequent investigation and the July 2026 update refined the distinction between information confirmed exposed and information retained in the precautionary potential-exposure scope.
Why does Asahi still include information if no transfer was evidenced?
In its July 17, 2026 update, Asahi said external experts found no evidence that personal information stored on data-center servers had been transferred outside the company. It nevertheless retained information in the potential-exposure scope when exposure could not be completely ruled out, saying this approach was intended to protect individuals’ rights and interests and prevent secondary harm. “Potentially exposed” therefore describes uncertainty and precaution in Asahi’s reporting; it is not equivalent to proof that every listed record was taken.

What did the attack disrupt?
Asahi said the system impact was limited to Japan-region operations. The disruption affected domestic order placement and product shipments, and the company used some manual processing to keep orders and shipments moving. Its February 2026 account described data-center isolation, forensic investigation, use of verified backups, rebuilding, and phased restoration; it did not say that all production stopped or that overseas operations were affected.

What did Asahi say it was doing to reduce risk?
Asahi’s February 2026 prevention plan included removing remote-access VPN equipment implicated in its route analysis, rebuilding network paths, moving toward dedicated PCs compatible with a zero-trust model, restricting connectivity, strengthening endpoint detection and response, and conducting penetration testing and threat hunting. These are company-reported actions, not independent confirmation that the risk has been eliminated.
In its July 27, 2026 filing notice, Asahi disclosed a material weakness in the operating effectiveness of certain Japan-region information-systems controls. It said some operational management, including required access-rights management, had not been sufficiently implemented. The company described remediation including controls over access privileges, monitoring, and fit-gap analyses.
How to read changing Asahi breach figures
Asahi’s November 27, 2025, February 18, 2026, and July 17, 2026 disclosures do not all measure the same thing. When comparing figures, distinguish the report date, affected-party category, whether the figure is approximate, and whether it refers to potential exposure or confirmed exposure. In particular, do not treat the revised July category estimates as a consistent unique-person count or compare them directly with earlier estimates as though the scope and counting method were unchanged.
