Choose by subject first: use arXiv for scholarly work in a field and category it serves, bioRxiv for life-sciences research, and medRxiv for eligible research about human health. None of the three peer-reviews a manuscript before posting. Screening checks suitability and, especially at medRxiv, safety—not whether the findings are scientifically correct. Before you submit, check your target journal or conference’s current preprint and review-anonymity policies.
Which preprint server should I use?
Start with the paper’s subject and article type, then check the repository’s current submission rules. A repository’s acceptance for posting does not mean a journal will accept the paper, or that its conclusions have been validated.

How do their scopes differ?
arXiv: research in its supported fields
arXiv’s submission guidance calls for “topical and refereeable scientific contributions that follow accepted standards of scholarly communication.” It serves multiple scientific communities, so identify the category that fits the paper rather than treating arXiv as a general-purpose repository. Its moderation guidance says submissions may be reclassified or declined when they do not meet its standards.

bioRxiv: life-sciences preprints
bioRxiv is a free archive and distribution service for unpublished life-sciences preprints. It says work in physical sciences, mathematics, or social sciences should be posted there only when it has direct relevance to the life sciences. A paper’s methods or technical subject alone do not establish that fit; the research itself should connect directly to life sciences.
bioRxiv screens for appropriateness, including scope, and may reject content. Articles are not peer-reviewed, edited, or typeset before posting.

medRxiv: medical and human-health research
medRxiv is a free archive for unpublished preprints in medical, clinical, and related health sciences. Its submission guide lists formats including original research articles, systematic reviews and meta-analyses, data articles, methodological work, and clinical research design protocols. It excludes, among other types, narrative reviews, case reports, opinion or commentary, and standalone lab protocols. Check the current guide for the complete eligibility rules.
For clinical trials and other prospective intervention studies, medRxiv’s FAQ specifies a trial registry ID requirement. Authors should also address ethics and remove potentially identifying patient information where needed.

Does posting on arXiv, bioRxiv, or medRxiv mean a paper is peer-reviewed?
No. arXiv states, “The arXiv moderation process is not a peer-review process.” bioRxiv articles are not peer-reviewed before posting, and medRxiv says its manuscripts are not certified by peer review. Screening may assess whether a submission belongs on a service or raises concerns; it does not establish that the methods or conclusions are sound.
When is medRxiv the right choice—and what caution applies?
Choose medRxiv when the paper concerns human health and its article type and submission details meet the service’s rules. Because readers may mistake a health preprint for established evidence, communicate its status clearly. medRxiv’s guidance says: “They should not be relied on to guide clinical practice or health-related behavior and should not be reported in news media as established information.”

Can I post a medical paper on bioRxiv?
Possibly, if the work is genuinely life-sciences research and meets bioRxiv’s scope and screening requirements. A paper about clinical or human-health research may fit medRxiv instead, depending on its subject and format. Do not choose solely by the word “medical” or by the intended audience: compare the manuscript itself with each repository’s current scope and exclusions.

Repository eligibility and publication policy are separate questions. If you have a target journal or conference, check its current rules on preprints before depositing. For conference papers, also check whether posting could reveal author identities during an anonymized review process. The policies can differ by venue; a repository cannot determine whether a particular journal or conference will accept your preprint. Verify any applicable funder and institutional requirements as well.

A practical decision path
- Classify the research. If it is in an arXiv-supported field, check category fit; if it is life-sciences research, examine bioRxiv; if it is human-health research, examine medRxiv.
- Match the article type. Confirm the repository accepts that format, especially medRxiv’s specified inclusions and exclusions.
- Check submission obligations. For arXiv, confirm registration, possible endorsement, and the distribution license. For medRxiv, check trial registration where applicable, ethics, and patient privacy.
- Check the destination venue. Read the target journal or conference’s current preprint and anonymity policies, plus relevant funder or institutional rules.
- Set reader expectations. Describe a posted manuscript as a preprint, not as peer-reviewed or clinically established research.
