HemoAct-F is an experimental oxygen-carrying material developed for cats, not an established veterinary blood substitute. A 2018 announcement from Chuo University and JAXA described its laboratory formulation and oxygen-binding properties, but the sources available do not establish that cats have received it in a clinical trial, that it is approved, or that it is available to veterinary hospitals.
What is HemoAct-F?
HemoAct-F is a cluster made from bovine hemoglobin combined with recombinant feline serum albumin. Hemoglobin carries oxygen; the Chuo University–JAXA announcement described the resulting cluster as a feline artificial oxygen carrier and a possible red-cell substitute. The announcement reported laboratory composition and oxygen-binding properties, not treatment outcomes in cats. Chuo University and JAXA’s 2018 announcement
JAXA’s role, according to that announcement, involved opportunities for crystallization and structural analysis of recombinant feline serum albumin using the Kibo Japanese Experiment Module on the International Space Station. The announcement also characterized the material as having no blood type and being capable of long-term storage. Those are claims about the research formulation, not proof of clinical performance or present-day supply.
Can cats receive HemoAct-F as a transfusion?
The available institutional sources do not document clinical testing in cats, regulatory approval, or routine veterinary use. A later Chuo University laboratory overview describes artificial blood for dogs and cats as under development, including recombinant feline and canine serum albumin work and an artificial plasma product called Aloxa. It does not establish feline clinical deployment or a route for owners to obtain HemoAct-F.

- 25+ YEARS OF CARE: UltiCare continues to create products and medicines designed with care in mind.
Accordingly, HemoAct-F should be understood as research rather than a replacement that a cat owner can request as an alternative to a conventional transfusion. Its formulation and laboratory oxygen-binding properties do not establish whether it would be safe, effective, or suitable for a particular cat.
How HemoAct-F differs from Oxyglobin
Oxyglobin is a separate hemoglobin-based oxygen-carrying solution, not another name for HemoAct-F. Unlike the HemoAct-F announcement, retrospective studies of Oxyglobin describe use in cats. They provide historical clinical observations, but they do not demonstrate that HemoAct-F works or shares Oxyglobin’s risks.

| Question | HemoAct-F | Oxyglobin |
|---|---|---|
| What is it? | Bovine hemoglobin combined with recombinant feline serum albumin, described as a cluster in Chuo University–JAXA’s 2018 announcement. | A distinct hemoglobin-based oxygen-carrying solution discussed in retrospective feline studies. |
| What evidence is described? | Laboratory formulation and oxygen-binding properties; the cited institutional sources do not document feline clinical testing. | Retrospective case series of cats treated in 1998–2000 and 2002–2006; neither establishes comparative efficacy. |
| What is established about availability? | Approval and current commercial or clinical availability are not established by the cited sources. | The studies describe historical clinical use; they do not establish current availability. |
What did the Oxyglobin studies find?
The 2002–2006 case series
In a retrospective series of 48 cats, 65 Oxyglobin infusions were administered. Hemoglobin concentration increased after 41 of the 49 infusion events evaluated for that outcome. The authors reported 77% overall survival at 24 hours. Because this was a retrospective series of seriously ill cats without a control group, those figures cannot show that Oxyglobin caused the observed changes or establish how it compares with other treatment. Weingart and Kohn, 2008
The same study reported severe side effects in seven cats with cardiac disease, including pulmonary edema, pleural effusion, and respiratory distress. Its authors warned of a high risk of life-threatening circulatory overload at the doses used. This is a serious risk signal from that study, not a universal event rate or a dosing guide.

The 1998–2000 case series
An earlier retrospective study examined 72 cats that received a hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier. Among 43 cats monitored more closely, 37 had reported improvements in measures that included hemoglobin concentration, blood pressure, temperature, appetite, and activity. The study also reported pulmonary edema in eight cats and pleural effusion in 21. Its authors said further investigation of these potential complications was needed before use could be recommended in cats. Gibson, Callan, Hoffman, and Giger, 2002

The evidence here does not support treating HemoAct-F as an available substitute for feline blood transfusions. Its reported laboratory properties are not clinical evidence, while Oxyglobin’s historical case-series results concern a different product and include significant adverse-event concerns. Neither source set establishes that an oxygen carrier is a simple, risk-free alternative to compatible feline blood.

- Natural sand is heavy, to avoid high costs as result of shipping and logistics, and after many years of testing, we arrived at an optimized amount of sand that is enough for the vast majority of cats to use once, yet still remain affordable. The amount of sand supplied in the 3 bags is meant for a one-time use all at once.
- Unlike Other Non-absorbing products, our Cat Litter has a patented Hydrophobic coating, this unique feature allows urine to rest on top of the sand no matter how much your cat tries to bury it, it will pop right back up easily when you move the sand from on top of it.
- Cats Love it! Its the only 100% Natural True Hydrophobic Sand That is Non-toxic and Odorless, Unlike Other Brands That Do Not Use Natural Sand. (Cats are picky animals, some more than others, and will take time to use the sand)
- Unlike cystocentesis which involves an expensive invasive procedure, this method of Cat urine collection is clean, easy, quick and simple, and most importantly non-invasive, which can be done at-home before a visit at the Vet.
- Early detection is important! Stay on top of your Cats health with the 2 testing Strips included and test for the 4 most common indicators for your pet's health - Glucose, Blood in the urine, pH, and Protein.
