CrowdStrike Intelligence reported that an actor used ARTEX, an open-source agentic penetration-testing tool, alongside large language models in activity against South Korean financial organizations between late September and early October 2026. The activity resulted in data exfiltration. CrowdStrike said the number of affected organizations was unconfirmed when it published its report on Oct. 7, 2026. The actor has not been named, and the country link rests on an analyst assessment made with moderate confidence.

What ARTEX is and why it matters here

CrowdStrike describes ARTEX as a recently released open-source agentic penetration-testing tool developed in China. Penetration-testing tools are built to find and test weaknesses in systems, and an agentic design means the software can chain steps together with a language model choosing and carrying out the next action. That design is what makes it relevant to this case: the reported activity involved the tool working with LLMs rather than a person typing every command by hand.

The project’s status also matters for anyone reading about it later. The Hacker News reported that the ARTEX project would no longer be updated or maintained and that no future release is planned. That is secondary reporting about the project, so check its current status before relying on it for any time-sensitive statement.

What CrowdStrike reported happened

CrowdStrike Intelligence said activity against South Korean financial organizations ran from late September to early October 2026 and led to data exfiltration. It did not confirm how many organizations were affected. It described two systems that were reportedly compromised. It also said these two examples do not establish that every affected institution was hit in the same way.

Loan-progress inquiry service at one bank

At one bank, the reported target was a loan-progress inquiry service used by financial brokers. Because the service is used by intermediaries rather than only by bank customers, a compromise of this kind touches a wider set of people than the bank’s own staff.

Employee mobile work-support system at another bank

At a second institution, the reported target was an employee mobile work-support system. CrowdStrike’s description points to internal staff tooling rather than a customer-facing product. The report does not say which data sets were taken from either system.

The artifacts behind the tool-use account

CrowdStrike’s account of ARTEX and LLM use rests on specific artifacts it reported observing. The table below separates what each artifact supports from what it does not show.

Observed artifact or arrangement What it supports What it does not establish
ARTEX configuration files The actor set up and ran ARTEX rather than only mentioning it Which specific intrusion steps the configuration directed
Exposed Claude Code session histories and memory files Language-model assistance was part of the operator’s working sessions That the model acted without human direction at each stage
Two-server arrangement The activity was split across infrastructure with distinct roles The number of operators, or who controlled each server
ARTEX instance using DeepSeek v4.1-flash as its primary LLM backend (as reported by CrowdStrike) The model that powered the tool’s main reasoning in the observed instance Which model, if any, was used for other tasks, or that the same backend was used in every incident

Taken together, these artifacts support the statement that ARTEX was used with LLMs in this campaign. They do not support the broader claim that AI carried out every stage of the intrusions. The reported picture is a human-run operation in which an AI-assisted tool played a documented role in some tasks. Where a task was done by the model and where a person intervened is not spelled out in the reporting available.

Who is behind it, and how firm that finding is

CrowdStrike states that the activity has not been attributed to a named adversary. Its assessment is that the actor was likely Chinese-speaking and financially motivated, with moderate confidence. The stated basis is the use of a Chinese-developed tool and Chinese-language prompts.

The organization’s own wording is the best guide to how far this goes. In its Oct. 7, 2026 report, CrowdStrike Intelligence wrote: “While this activity has not been attributed to a named adversary, the threat actor is likely a Chinese speaker and financially motivated.”

Two points follow. First, the language and tool choices are indicators, not proof of nationality, and a tool being developed in one country does not establish where its users are. Second, the financial motive is an assessment of the activity’s likely purpose, not a finding about any particular person. Neither point should be read as a government or named-group attribution.

What is still unknown

Yonhap reported on Oct. 8, 2026 that the attacker’s identity, the full extent of the breaches, and the amount of stolen data remained unconfirmed. Secondary coverage has circulated figures for affected organizations and data volume, but none of the figures reviewed trace back to a primary source that confirms them. Treat any specific victim count or data total you see elsewhere as unverified until an official statement or primary report gives it.

The reported scope is therefore limited to the two systems CrowdStrike described, the late-September-to-early-October window, and the data exfiltration it confirmed occurred.

What South Korean regulators and firms have said

The Financial Services Commission issued a consumer warning about phishing and smishing that could follow personal-information leaks in the financial sector. According to the notice, passwords and OTP information were not leaked in the incidents it covered. That statement is tied to those incidents and should not be read as a general guarantee about every financial service.

Warning signs the regulator flagged

The Commission advised particular caution when someone who claims to offer a loan asks for:

  • an advance payment before any loan is issued;
  • repayment of an existing loan to a new account or through a new channel;
  • installation of an app.

A legitimate lender does not normally need any of these steps to process a loan, so a request for one should be treated as a reason to stop and verify the contact through a number or channel you already trust.

What the Commission directed financial firms to do

The Commission said it directed financial firms to run a special response period for secondary harm, operate dedicated customer channels, strengthen fraud detection using the leaked information, and share suspicious information through its anti-phishing platform.

For context on that platform, the Commission has reported cumulative results from its ASAP system since its October 2025 launch, through August 2026: about 500,000 suspicious items shared, 7,666 suspicious accounts suspended, and roughly 69.94 billion won in losses prevented. These are platform-wide figures. They do not describe the ARTEX-linked activity or its victims.
