Arm’s threatened cancellation did not take effect. Arm withdrew its October 2024 termination notice in January 2025, according to Qualcomm’s filing chronology, and Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon said in February that Arm had “no current plan to terminate” Qualcomm’s architecture license. The dispute nevertheless remains unresolved: Arm’s appeal of a later ruling for Qualcomm was pending as of September 30, 2026. A cancellation could have put Qualcomm’s ability to make or sell chips using affected rights at risk, with possible consequences for Snapdragon phones and PCs, but no reliable published estimate quantifies that hypothetical disruption.
What happened to Arm’s cancellation threat?
On October 22, 2024, Arm gave Qualcomm 60 days’ notice alleging breaches of Qualcomm’s architecture license, Bloomberg reported. The notice was an escalation in the companies’ dispute, not a completed shutdown of Qualcomm chip production. Qualcomm called the move an attempt to pressure a longtime partner and said its broad architecture rights covered its CPUs.
Qualcomm’s 2026 filing chronology says Arm withdrew the notice on January 8, 2025. Reuters reported on February 5 that Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon said Arm had withdrawn the notice and had “no current plan to terminate the Qualcomm architecture license agreement,” while reserving its rights during the litigation. In other words, the specific 60-day threat was withdrawn; it did not immediately stop Qualcomm from making chips.

Qualcomm acquired Nuvia in 2021. Nuvia had an Arm Architecture License Agreement (ALA), which Arm says it terminated in March 2022 because Nuvia had not obtained Arm’s consent to assign the agreement to Qualcomm. Qualcomm’s position is that its own ALA and Technology License Agreement cover the acquired architected cores, later developments and SoCs that incorporate them.

The disagreement matters because Nuvia’s work underlies Qualcomm’s Oryon custom CPU cores. Arm sought an order requiring Qualcomm to stop using and destroy technology developed under Nuvia’s agreement. Qualcomm sought a declaration that its existing licenses remain valid. Those are opposing legal claims, not a settled finding that Qualcomm lacked the rights it says it holds.
What did the court decide, and what is still pending?
In December 2024, a jury made findings in the case. Qualcomm later announced that the court dismissed Arm’s remaining architecture-license claim. Arm’s 2026 filing records a more specific procedural outcome: on September 30, 2025, the court entered judgment as a matter of law for Qualcomm on whether Nuvia breached its agreement. Arm’s appeal to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit was pending as of September 30, 2026.

The case also includes Qualcomm’s counterclaim that Arm failed to provide license offers on commercially reasonable prices and terms. Qualcomm’s 2026 filing warns that a ruling invalidating licenses or requiring renegotiation could affect Arm’s royalty revenue and lead other licensees to seek renegotiation. That is a stated potential consequence, not a finding that Arm’s licenses have been invalidated.
Which Qualcomm products could have been exposed?
Arm licenses the architecture Qualcomm uses to design chips. If Qualcomm had lost the rights needed to make or sell products using the affected technology, Oryon-based processors and SoCs incorporating the contested cores could have faced disruption. Because Snapdragon chips go into both smartphones and PCs, the threatened cancellation raised concerns beyond a single product line.

The scope would have depended on which license rights were affected. Qualcomm says its existing agreements cover the acquired cores, later developments and SoCs incorporating them. Other Qualcomm products may rely on separate agreements, but the available filings do not map every product to a particular license. It would therefore be inaccurate to assume that every Snapdragon product—or every Qualcomm chip—would automatically have been barred from sale.
How could cancellation have affected phones and PCs?
Bloomberg described the threatened cancellation as a risk to smartphone and PC markets. If Qualcomm had been unable to make or sell affected chips, device makers could have faced uncertainty over supply, launch timing and the cost or difficulty of switching to alternatives. The practical effect would have varied by product and by how quickly a manufacturer could redesign a device around another chip.

No reliable published unit-sales or revenue estimate establishes the size of that hypothetical impact. Any precise figure for affected phones, PCs, or market losses would go beyond the available evidence.

The withdrawn notice did not impose the threatened immediate stop, and the later ruling favored Qualcomm on the Nuvia breach question. But the appeal means the broader licensing dispute was not necessarily final as of September 30, 2026. For customers, the case is a source of legal and product-planning uncertainty—not evidence that Snapdragon phones or PCs have been halted or that a current shortage is underway.
