Arm PCs are an established Windows laptop category, and app support is broader than it was when renewed interest in the platform was discussed in 2024. Windows 11 on Arm runs native Arm64 software and can emulate many x86 and x64 apps, but compatibility is not universal. If you are considering one, check the exact apps, drivers, and peripherals your work depends on before buying.
Why Arm PCs drew renewed attention
Jim McGregor’s January 2, 2024 EE Times opinion article argued that Arm-based PCs were attracting new interest. He pointed to Apple’s move from Intel processors to its Arm-compatible M-series chips, Microsoft’s continuing work on Windows on Arm, and Qualcomm’s development of Snapdragon processors for PCs. Apple’s transition offered a prominent example, but it did not prove that Windows devices would face the same conditions: Apple controls both its hardware and operating system, while Windows PCs span a broader hardware and software ecosystem. McGregor described potential advantages including power efficiency, always-on connectivity on some models, and integrated AI processing. He also raised concerns about legacy and specialist software, retail visibility, cellular connectivity, and graphics. Those were the article’s arguments and market observations at the time, not a current, controlled comparison of Arm and x86 laptops.

Microsoft now describes Windows 11 on Arm as supporting both native Arm64 applications and emulation for many x86 and x64 applications. Its examples of software with native Arm versions include Microsoft 365 apps, Chrome, Slack, Spotify, Zoom, WhatsApp, Blender, Affinity Suite, and DaVinci Resolve. Availability and capabilities can depend on the particular app and version; the list is not a guarantee that every component, plug-in, or workflow will behave identically. Prism improves the emulation path
Microsoft says Prism, included with Windows 11 version 24H2, improves performance and CPU use for emulated applications compared with its prior emulation technology. Microsoft describes it as tuned for Qualcomm Snapdragon processors and says some performance features require Snapdragon X series hardware. Prism is an improvement to the route for running many existing apps; it does not guarantee that every application, game, driver, or peripheral is compatible or performs like a native Arm version. What remains uncertain or workload-dependent
Broader app support addresses one historical obstacle, but a platform-level statement that “most” Windows apps run is not a substitute for checking the software you rely on. Compatibility can hinge on low-level drivers, hardware protection keys, plug-ins, specialist utilities, games, or connected devices. A native Arm64 build, where available, is distinct from running an x86 or x64 version through emulation.

Graphics and battery life also need to be evaluated on the exact laptop and workload. The 2024 article raised limited discrete-graphics support as a concern; the available Microsoft materials do not provide a current, controlled comparison of GPU performance or battery life between particular Arm and x86 laptops. Nor do they establish that every Arm PC has cellular connectivity or an always-connected experience.
McGregor’s article also reported interest involving MediaTek, AMD, and Nvidia, and attributed the phrase “pretty insignificant” to then-Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger in the context of the competitive threat. These are details of the January 2024 article, not confirmation of current product plans or a measure of today’s market position. The article and current Microsoft documentation do not establish a current market-share figure or independent performance benchmark.

How to decide whether an Arm laptop fits
A Windows on Arm laptop, such as a Snapdragon X Copilot+ PC, may be worth considering if its exact configuration supports your everyday applications and devices. Microsoft names Surface Laptop among its Copilot+ PC examples, but its documentation does not establish a retailer’s current stock, price, or available configuration. Microsoft Learn: Windows on Arm.
- List your must-have software. Check with each software publisher whether the specific app and version has a native Arm64 release or is supported under Windows 11 on Arm emulation. Pay special attention to professional tools, plug-ins, games, and anything that uses a separate installer or licensing component.
- Check drivers and peripherals. Confirm support for printers, scanners, audio interfaces, docks, security keys, and other devices you need. An application that launches successfully may still depend on a driver or accessory that does not work on your system.
- Match the laptop to your workload. For graphics-intensive work, compute-heavy tasks, or long battery-dependent days, seek evidence for the exact laptop and workload rather than inferring results from its processor family. Compare the configuration, connectivity options, support, and price with the alternatives you would actually buy.
- Verify the exact model before purchase. Check the seller’s listing and manufacturer support for the model, configuration, availability, and compatibility details. A device-family example does not establish that a particular configuration is currently sold in your region.
What the Snapdragon X TOPS figure means
Microsoft Learn lists the Snapdragon X series NPU capability as 45 trillion operations per second (TOPS), according to Microsoft’s documentation last updated June 25, 2026. TOPS is an NPU capability figure; it is not an independent CPU benchmark, a measurement of overall PC speed, or a battery-life result. It should not be used alone to predict how quickly a laptop will complete your specific work. Microsoft Learn: Windows on Arm.
