Arizona court officials say hackers copied personal information tied to court records, including records associated with 1.3 million people with unpaid fees, fines, or restitution. The Associated Press reported the figures on October 6, 2026; the exact data fields exposed for any individual have not been publicly specified. The Arizona Judicial Branch’s official alert hub is the place to check for incident updates.
What happened in the Arizona courts cyberattack?
The Arizona Supreme Court announced on September 25, 2026, that criminal hackers or bots had targeted the state court system. The court said IT staff discovered the attack, took action to stop it, and believed personally identifiable information had been copied. Chief Justice Ann Scott Timmer said, “As soon as I learned about this outrageous criminal attack on Arizona’s Courts, I immediately called our team together to formulate a response.” (Arizona Supreme Court notice, September 25, 2026.)
The Associated Press reported that court staff found the attack on September 24 and shut it down on a backup server about two hours later. The court’s public announcement came the following day. The sources do not establish who carried out the attack or how the attackers first gained access.
What information did hackers take from Arizona courts?
AP reported three record categories and their reported scale. They are separate categories; the figures should not be added to produce a total of unique people, and the sources do not establish whether individuals appear in more than one category.

These figures were reported by the Associated Press on October 6, 2026, citing Arizona Supreme Court figures. They count people or records in particular categories, not confirmed financial losses or a count of distinct individuals across all affected record sets.
The court and AP have not specified the exact personal data fields copied for each person, nor published a complete list of people whose records were involved. It would be inaccurate to assume everyone in any reported category had the same information exposed.

What did officials say about the effects?
According to AP’s report, officials said the incident had not affected or delayed court cases, no records were altered or deleted, and information about jurors, witnesses, and court employees was not stolen. Court spokesperson Alberto Rodriguez told AP, “We don’t have any evidence it has been used or shared.” That statement describes what officials knew at the time; it is not a guarantee that the information will never be misused.
Was my information stolen in the Arizona court cyberattack?
The public information does not let an individual determine exposure from the reported totals alone. A record’s presence in one of the categories does not reveal which data fields were copied or whether a particular person’s record was affected. The court said it was alerting as many people as it believed were affected, but it has not published a complete recipient list or a public deadline for all notices.

- Check for actual misuse. Review relevant financial and other accounts. If you find unauthorized activity, contact the company or institution involved and follow its fraud-reporting process.
- Change exposed or reused passwords and PINs. Replace them with unique credentials, especially anywhere the same password or PIN was reused.
- Review your credit reports. Look for unfamiliar accounts or activity. If you find evidence of identity theft, report it at IdentityTheft.gov, which can provide a recovery plan.
- Consider a fraud alert or credit freeze. Both are free. A fraud alert asks creditors to take extra steps to verify your identity; you can request one from one nationwide credit bureau, which must notify the other two. A credit freeze restricts access to your credit file for new-credit applications and must be placed separately with Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. You may need to lift a freeze when applying for credit.
These steps follow the FTC’s IdentityTheft.gov recovery guidance. A freeze can make it harder for someone to open new credit in your name, but it does not prevent every kind of identity misuse. Paid monitoring is not required to take the free steps above.

Use the Arizona Judicial Branch Cybersecurity Alert hub for the court’s current public information. The Arizona Attorney General’s data-breach notification FAQ explains the state law’s general framework and says courts are excluded from the entities covered by the notification law described there. That business notification deadline should not be assumed to govern this court incident; refer to the court’s own notices and policies for its process.
