To maximise home Wi-Fi, first find out whether the slowdown comes from your device, Wi-Fi coverage, router placement, or internet service. Test near the router and in the problem spot, then adjust placement or use Ethernet before buying new hardware.
What is slowing your Wi-Fi?
Wi-Fi performance and the speed of your internet service are related, but they are not the same thing. A slow result can come from the device, its distance from the router, the Wi-Fi band it uses, walls or other barriers, interference, or the connection from your internet service provider (ISP). Google outlines these as factors in its Nest Wifi and Google Wifi speed guidance.
- On the affected device, check performance near the router, then repeat in the location where it is slow.
- Check whether other devices have the same problem. If only one device is affected, its capabilities or connection may be the limiting factor; if several are affected in one area, coverage is a more likely issue.
- If performance is below what you expect from your service, contact your ISP to check the connection. A new router or mesh point will not automatically fix an ISP-side slowdown.
Improve router placement first
Place the router in an open, central, elevated location if your modem and cabling allow it. Keep it clear of physical obstructions where practical. The best position depends on your home’s size, construction, layout, and where you use Wi-Fi; there is no single placement that suits every house. See Google’s Wi-Fi device placement guidance and the FCC’s consumer guidance on improving home internet connectivity.
After moving the router, repeat the same checks in the problem area. Comparing results before and after the change helps show whether placement made a difference.

- Wi-Fi 6 Mesh Wi-Fi - Next-gen Wi-Fi 6 AX3000 whole home mesh system to eliminate weak Wi-Fi for good(2×2/HE160 2402 Mbps plus 2×2 574 Mbps)
- Whole Home WiFi Coverage - Covers up to 6500 square feet with seamless high-performance Wi-Fi 6 and eliminate dead zones and buffering. Better than traditional WiFi booster and Range Extenders
- Connect More Devices - Deco X55(3-pack) is strong enough to connect up to 150 devices with strong and reliable Wi-Fi
- Our Cybersecurity Commitment - TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement
- More Gigabit Ports - Each Deco X55 has 3 Gigabit Ethernet ports(6 in total for a 2-pack) and supports Wired Ethernet Backhaul for better speeds. Any of them can work as a Wi-Fi Router
Place mesh points where they can still reach the network
A mesh point needs a reliable connection to the router or another mesh point. Put it between the problem area and the nearest working point—not inside the dead zone—and keep it in the open. If the connection is weak, the mesh point can become a bottleneck rather than improving performance.
If your mesh system provides a connection test, run it after placement and move a weak point closer to the primary point before testing again. Google describes its test as measuring the connection between the router or primary Wi-Fi point and additional points in its mesh test guide. This is Google product guidance; other systems may use different test names or methods.

Choose a Wi-Fi band that suits the device and location
Wi-Fi bands trade range against other characteristics, and the device may choose a band automatically. The FCC says 5 GHz is faster than 2.4 GHz but covers a shorter range. Google notes that 2.4 GHz reaches farther than 5 or 6 GHz, and some smart-home devices support only 2.4 GHz. Check the device’s capabilities and router settings rather than assuming every device can use every band. Google explains its products’ band behavior in its 2.4, 5 GHz and 6 GHz guidance.
Try Ethernet for fixed, high-demand devices
If a stationary device such as a desktop computer or television is near the router, try connecting it directly with Ethernet if running a cable is practical. The FCC says a direct Ethernet connection can provide the highest speeds and reduce Wi-Fi congestion. Wiring one device can also leave more wireless capacity for devices that cannot be wired.

- Better Coverage than traditional WiFi routers: Deco S4 three units work seamlessly to create a WiFi mesh network that can cover homes up to 5, 500 square feet. No dead zone anymore.
- Seamless and Stable WiFi Mesh: Rather than wifi range extender that need multiple network names and passwords, Deco S4 allows you to enjoy seamless roaming throughout the house, with a single network name and password.
- Incredibly fast 3× 3 6 Stream AC1900 speeds makes the deco capable of providing connectivity for up to 100 devices.
- With advanced Deco Mesh Technology, units work together to form a unified network with a single network name. Devices automatically switch between Decos as you move through your home for the fastest possible speeds.
Check for interference, then make one change at a time
Nearby Wi-Fi traffic and household electronics can contribute to interference. If you suspect a particular source, move it or turn it off temporarily and compare performance in the same locations. Treat this as a test, not a guaranteed fix: the effect depends on the home and the source of the problem.

| Option | Consider it when | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Router | Your existing router or the devices using it appear to limit performance. | Confirm compatibility with your ISP connection and client devices; a router upgrade will not resolve an ISP-side slowdown. |
| Mesh system or additional mesh point | Coverage remains poor across rooms or floors after you improve placement. | Check compatibility and whether each point can maintain a useful connection to the router or nearest point. |
| Range extender | You have a persistent coverage gap that an added coverage device can address. | Check compatibility and place it where it still receives a reliable signal—not in the dead zone itself. |
| Ethernet cable | A fixed device can be connected directly to the router. | Consider whether a practical cable route is available; a wired connection avoids relying on Wi-Fi for that device. |
Before choosing a product, consider the home’s size, floors, dense walls, and weak areas; the supported bands and capabilities of your devices; how an added point will connect; and whether Ethernet can serve the device instead. Google’s mesh network overview explains how mesh systems use multiple points. No general performance gain can be promised for a particular upgrade: the result depends on the diagnosed bottleneck and the home’s conditions.
