Yes, VPNs can still be useful, but they do not make you anonymous or eliminate the need to trust a service. A VPN shifts some visibility from your internet provider and local network to the VPN operator. NordVPN stands apart in one specific, documented respect: it says Deloitte conducted a sixth review of its no-logs claim in 2025, following a fifth engagement in 2024. Those reviews offer evidence about defined periods and scopes—not a permanent guarantee or proof that NordVPN is better than every alternative.
Are VPNs still trustworthy?
“Trustworthy” depends on what you expect a VPN to do. A commercial VPN encrypts traffic between your device and a VPN server, routes that traffic through the provider’s network, and presents the server’s IP address to the websites you visit. This can reduce what your internet service provider (ISP) or the operator of a local Wi-Fi network can see about traffic inside the tunnel, while concealing your originating IP address from destination sites.
But the VPN provider operates the other end of that tunnel and handles traffic as it exits. You are changing which intermediary you trust, not removing intermediaries. The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) recommends evaluating a provider’s policies, data collection, country and transparency practices rather than treating a VPN as a general privacy guarantee. What NordVPN’s no-logs reviews establish
NordVPN’s notable evidence is a repeated sequence of publicly described independent assurance engagements. The chronology is based on NordVPN’s own statements; it should not be read as a complete independent comparison with other providers.

An assurance review is a bounded observation, not a promise that practices can never change. EFF notes that provider practices may change after an audit and that companies may face government or law-enforcement pressure. A review also does not validate every privacy or security claim: evidence about logging is not evidence about malware protection, app security, speed or anonymity.
What can your ISP see when you use NordVPN?
A VPN does not make its connection invisible. NordVPN support says an ISP may see that you are connected to an IP address owned by a VPN service, along with connection timing and the protocol port. The ISP generally cannot see the contents of traffic carried inside the encrypted tunnel, but visibility can depend on what is outside that tunnel and on the services or connections involved. Nor should “no logs” be taken to mean that a service stores no information of any kind. NordVPN support says the service stores a username to establish a connection. That is distinct from a claim about recording users’ browsing activity. NordVPN Support lists information it stores.
Does a VPN make you anonymous?
No. Hiding or changing your IP address does not prevent websites and apps from recognizing you through other signals. Cookies, tracking pixels, browser fingerprinting, GPS data and accounts you are logged into can all identify or follow you independently of your IP address. EFF’s guide puts it plainly: “A VPN is not a tool for anonymity.”

- For IP masking: websites see the VPN server’s address rather than your originating IP.
- For local-network privacy: the VPN can shield tunnel contents from the ISP or Wi-Fi operator, while the VPN provider handles traffic as it exits.
- For account or device tracking: a VPN does not erase cookies, account identity, GPS signals or fingerprinting.
- For malware, phishing or legal demands: a VPN is not a complete defense and does not prevent authorities from seeking other records.
Are VPNs worth using on public Wi-Fi?
Sometimes, but public Wi-Fi is not automatically unsafe. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says that, because encryption is widespread, connecting through public Wi-Fi is usually safe when visiting encrypted sites. The FTC’s public Wi-Fi guidance explains the current baseline. EFF also discusses how encryption protects internet communications in its encryption guide.
A VPN may still be useful if you do not trust the network operator or want to limit what that operator can learn from traffic metadata. The trade-off is that you place that visibility with the VPN provider. Decide based on the specific network and what you want to protect, rather than assuming a VPN is required for every public connection.

How to assess a VPN provider’s trustworthiness
Do not treat a “no-logs” label or one audit as a complete verdict. Compare evidence that speaks to the privacy practice you care about:

- Data practices: read what the service says it retains about activity, connections, accounts, payments, diagnostics and IP addresses; distinguish connection requirements from browsing records.
- Policy consistency: compare the privacy policy and terms with the service’s “no-logs” wording.
- Transparency: look for disclosures about legal demands and how the company handles them.
- Separate claims: a no-logs review does not itself establish app or infrastructure security, censorship circumvention, streaming access or anonymity.
- Fit to purpose: decide whether your goal is privacy from a local network, IP masking, censorship circumvention, remote access or something else.
On the evidence described publicly, NordVPN stands apart for the repeated cadence of its disclosed no-logs reviews. That is a meaningful point to weigh, but it does not establish categorical superiority over competitors or a guarantee of future conduct.
