Steam has seen more vampire-focused game releases, but that trend does not prove a recession is coming. A PC Gamer feature by Lincoln Carpenter, published October 8, 2026, counted a growing number and share of such games; its charts make a playful comparison with economic pressures, not a tested recession forecast.
What the Steam charts show
Carpenter’s feature reports that four vampire games were released on Steam in 2016, compared with 65 by October 8, 2026, with additional releases scheduled before that year ended. The 2026 figure is year-to-date, not a final annual total. Quarterly counts also rose: the highest quarter in 2020 had six launches, while the peak quarter in 2026 had 24.
The feature separately counted when games first appeared in SteamDB’s archive, using that as an approximation of when they were listed. On that measure, it found nine vampire-game listings in 2016 and 99 in 2025. An archive appearance is not a development start date, and it is not the same measure as a game’s release date.
How the feature counted vampire games
The author manually reviewed 1,213 Steam games carrying the user-defined Vampires tag, recording release dates and first SteamDB archive appearances. He then judged whether each game was genuinely centered on vampires. Games about being or dealing with vampires counted; titles with only incidental vampire content generally did not.

That distinction matters because Steam tags are applied by users and can include games that are not meaningfully about vampires. Carpenter also notes that the emergence of Vampire Survivors-like games helped make the tag useful for discoverability, even when a game’s relationship to vampires might be indirect. The classification was subjective: the feature acknowledges that it missed Resident Evil Village despite the prominence of a vampire character.
As a result, the figures describe a manually assembled set, not an official Steam category or a fully reproducible release series. V Rising is a clear example of a vampire-centered game: Steam identifies it as a vampire survival action RPG from Stunlock Studios, released May 8, 2024, with single-player and online play options. That example does not independently confirm the feature’s totals.

Why the share matters more than the raw count
Steam’s overall release volume grew substantially over the comparison period. The feature reports 9,634 Steam game launches in 2020 and 21,263 in 2025. A rising raw vampire-game count therefore needs context: more games of every kind were arriving on the platform.

Carpenter says the share remains below one percent under his classification, although some recent quarterly shares were more than twice the level at the start of the decade. The rating is a playful ratio, not a validated economic statistic, and its values depend on the subjective game-selection rules and archive dates.

Why this is not proof of a recession indicator
The feature places the game trend alongside signs of household financial pressure. As reported in the feature, US median household income rose about 4.6% in real terms from 2020 to 2025, while consumer prices rose roughly 27–29% from the start of 2020 to the feature’s publication, depending on whether food and energy are included. It also describes rising credit-card delinquency, a falling personal savings rate, and an increase in the Producer Price Index for wholesale trade industries. Those comparisons provide economic context; they do not establish a link between those conditions and vampire-game releases.
A recession is not simply a period when consumers feel squeezed or one kind of entertainment becomes more popular. The National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) defines its traditional meaning as “a significant decline in economic activity that is spread across the economy and that lasts more than a few months.” Its committee weighs depth, diffusion, and duration across a range of broad indicators, and dates turning points retrospectively.

The PC Gamer feature does not report a statistical test of whether vampire-game counts predict recessions, a causal explanation, a lead-lag analysis, or a comparison with official recession dates. Its charts show that the category grew while some economic measures moved in troubling directions; they do not show that one forecasts the other. The headline’s recession claim is best read as a comic thesis, not an economic conclusion.
