The Sony WH-1000XM5 can be a worthwhile buy if its current price in your market is meaningfully lower than the newer WH-1000XM6 and its fit and features suit you. Its headline battery figures are maximum estimates, not guaranteed everyday results, and Sony’s noise-canceling claims describe the design rather than a like-for-like independent test.
When the WH-1000XM5 is worth buying
Consider the WH-1000XM5 when you want Sony’s over-ear noise-canceling headphones and find them at a price that makes sense beside the WH-1000XM6. The model is no longer Sony’s current flagship, so a past discount or a price quoted for another country is not a reliable guide to today’s value. Check the live price where you shop and compare the actual gap between the two models. What Hi-Fi? also frames the XM5 as a value option when discounted, but its deal coverage is time- and market-specific.
It is a less straightforward choice if you are paying close to the newer model’s price, need a guaranteed fit, or expect the advertised maximum runtime under every listening setup. The available information does not establish a complete controlled comparison of the XM5 and XM6 across cancellation, comfort, battery, and connectivity; avoid treating either model as categorically better without comparing evidence relevant to your needs.
Noise cancellation and listening features
Sony says the WH-1000XM5 uses two processors and eight microphones for noise cancellation, with an Auto NC Optimizer that adjusts cancellation to the environment. Sony’s launch announcement says the system is designed to reduce noise especially in the mid-to-high frequency range. These are descriptions and claims from the manufacturer, not a current head-to-head laboratory result. Sony’s May 2022 announcement and US product page explain the design.
#1 Best Overall
- PREMIUM NOISE CANCELLATION: Two processors control 8 microphones for unprecedented noise cancellation. With Auto NC Optimizer, noise canceling is automatically optimized based on your wearing conditions and environment.
- MAGNIFICENT SOUND: Engineered to perfection with the new Integrated Processor V1.
- CRYSTAL CLEAR HANDS-FREE CALLING: 4 beamforming microphones, precise voice pickup, and advanced audio signal processing.
- LONG BATTERY LIFE: Up to 30-hour battery life with quick charging (3 min charge for 3 hours of playback).
- ULTRA-COMFORTABLE: Lightweight design with soft fit leather.
For a buying decision, distinguish that feature set from measured performance: a claim about the number of microphones or processors does not tell you how the headphones compare with another model in a controlled test. If noise cancellation is your priority, look for a reliable, like-for-like comparison rather than relying on the component count alone.
Battery life: Sony’s maximum estimates
Sony USA lists up to 30 hours of continuous music playback with noise canceling on and up to 40 hours with it off. It separately lists up to 24 hours of communication time with noise canceling on and up to 32 hours with it off. These are Sony’s maximum specifications, not independent runtime measurements. Sony’s US specifications provide the figures.

Sony’s Help Guide gives different maximum playback estimates by codec, illustrating why the headline number is not universal:
| Codec | Noise canceling on | Noise canceling off |
|---|---|---|
| LDAC | Up to 26 hours | Up to 36 hours |
| AAC | Up to 30 hours | Up to 40 hours |
| SBC | Up to 28 hours | Up to 38 hours |
These codec-specific figures are Sony Help Guide estimates; the guide says actual runtime depends on conditions. It also notes that features including DSEE Extreme, Speak-to-Chat, the equalizer, voice assistant, and noise cancellation reduce battery time. Your phone or computer, codec, volume, settings, and pattern of use can therefore make the result differ from the maximum. Sony’s WH-1000XM5 Help Guide sets out the conditions and feature caveats.

The same guide says about three minutes of charging can provide about one hour of playback. Its longer quick-charge claim—about three hours of playback after three minutes—requires a commercially available USB-PD-compatible AC adapter with output of 9 V/2.3 A or more. Do not assume that result with any charger.
Comfort: useful design, subjective fit
Sony describes a redesigned lightweight headband and soft-fit synthetic leather cushioning, and promoted the XM5 for all-day listening. Those details explain the comfort intent, not how the headphones will feel on every person. Head shape, ear size, glasses, warmth, and session length all affect fit; the available evidence does not establish universal comfort or a measured comfort score. If possible, try them on for the length of time you expect to wear them before committing. Sony’s product information describes the design.

Connectivity and device compatibility

Codec support on the headphones does not mean every paired phone or computer can transmit every codec: availability depends on the source device and its settings. Check your devices’ codec support if LDAC matters to your purchase. Sony’s specifications and product information list the connection features.
