Yes. In randomized trials, several sunscreen active ingredients entered participants’ bloodstreams under specified application conditions. That finding prompted the need for more safety data; it did not show that the ingredients caused harm. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) continues to recommend sun-protection measures, including sunscreen.

What the studies found

Two randomized trials measured sunscreen active ingredients in blood plasma after participants applied specified commercial products. Both found systemic absorption above the FDA threshold used to determine whether certain additional safety studies might be waived.

Study Participants and products Ingredients measured What was found
2019 randomized trial 24 healthy volunteers; four marketed formulations used under maximal-use conditions, including reapplication every two hours. Avobenzone, oxybenzone, octocrylene, and ecamsule. All four were detected in plasma at levels above the FDA threshold relevant to potentially waiving some nonclinical safety studies.
2020 randomized trial 48 healthy participants; four formulations tested under single- and maximal-use conditions. Avobenzone, oxybenzone, octocrylene, homosalate, octisalate, and octinoxate. All six were systemically absorbed, with plasma concentrations above the threshold cited by the researchers.

These results apply to the products and application protocols tested. They do not establish that every product, ingredient, or everyday use pattern produces the same level of absorption.

What the 0.5 ng/mL threshold means

FDA guidance uses 0.5 nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL) as a threshold relevant to deciding whether certain nonclinical safety studies may be waived. The FDA’s maximal usage trial guidance describes measuring systemic absorption as part of evaluating sunscreen active ingredients.

Exceeding 0.5 ng/mL is a signal that additional safety data may be needed. It is not a toxicity boundary, a diagnosis, or evidence that an ingredient caused illness. The trials measured plasma concentrations and absorption, not disease or other clinical harm.

What the findings do—and do not—tell us about safety

The trial authors said more work was needed to establish what the measured absorption means clinically. The 2019 authors put it this way: “The systemic absorption of sunscreen ingredients supports the need for further studies to determine the clinical significance of these findings.”

What to do about sunscreen

The FDA’s consumer guidance acknowledges that some sunscreen active ingredients can pass through the skin into the body and still recommends continued sun-protection measures, including sunscreen. The absorption trials alone do not establish that mineral sunscreen or a particular brand is safer.
