Yes—Sony’s WH-1000XM6 is a strong premium option if reducing transit, airplane, or workplace noise is a priority, but it does not make every sound disappear. The WH-1000XM5 may be the better value if it costs substantially less: Sony lists the same maximum battery life and multipoint support for both. Your choice should turn on how much you value the XM6’s reported improvement with office voices and keyboard noise, the current price, and whether the fit seals comfortably.
What the WH-1000XM6 and WH-1000XM5 offer
Both are over-ear wireless headphones with noise canceling, ambient sound features, multipoint connectivity, and Sony-rated maximum playback of 30 hours with noise canceling enabled or 40 hours with it off. Those are manufacturer maximums, not guaranteed real-world runtimes. See Sony’s WH-1000XM6 specifications and WH-1000XM5 specifications.
Sony says the XM6’s QN3 processor is seven times faster than the XM5’s QN1 and that it optimizes 12 microphones. That is Sony’s product-page comparison, not an independently validated benchmark. Sony also promotes improved call clarity; the evidence here does not establish that the XM6 will remove every background sound from your voice on calls. Sony’s WH-1000XM6 product page describes its features.

Which model makes sense for each setting?
Commuting
RTINGS reports that the XM6 reduces chattering-commuter sound. Noise canceling is not a reason to ignore traffic, platform edges, or transit announcements: use ambient sound or remove the headphones when awareness matters. Its WH-1000XM6 review discusses commuting and noise isolation.
Air travel
RTINGS describes the XM6 as impressive for travel and reports reduced airplane-engine noise. That is a reviewer assessment, not a promise of silence; announcements and other sounds may still be audible. The WH-1000XM6 review covers its travel use.
Rank #2

- HD NOISE CANCELING PROCESSOR QN3: The HD Noise Canceling Processor QN3 is 7x faster than the QN1 (found in our WH-1000XM5 headphones), optimizing 12 microphones in real time for superior noise cancellation, sound quality, and call clarity. With more microphones than ever, we can precisely detect external noise and counteracts it with opposite soundwaves, delivering a new level of noise cancellation.
- ULTRA-CLEAR CALLS, FROM ANYWHERE: A six-microphone AI-based beamforming system, intelligent noise reduction technology, and wind-resistant design, work together to isolate your voice, filter out background noise, and ensure every word comes through crisp and clear—even in the busiest environments.
- COMPACT CARRYING CASE & FOLDABLE DESIGN: Crafted for durability and style, the foldable design features precision metalwork and a compact case with a magnetic closure—ready to go wherever you do.
Working from home
The XM6 is the more compelling of these two if household or office noise is the central problem. RTINGS reports attenuation of environmental noise in crowded offices and homes with children, and its comparison finds the XM6 particularly better at reducing mid-range office chatter and keyboard clacks. A good seal matters: glasses or a shift in fit can make noise reduction less consistent.

Calls and switching devices
Sony promotes improved call clarity on the XM6, but that is a manufacturer claim rather than an independent call-quality comparison in the evidence cited here. Both models list multipoint, which is useful on paper for connecting a work computer and phone. Check that your particular devices and setup work as expected.

Is the XM6 worth paying more for?
Choose the XM6 if you prioritize the reported improvement in reducing office voices and keyboard noise, its fit works for you, and the price difference is acceptable. Consider the XM5 if it is substantially cheaper: Sony specifies equal maximum battery figures for both, and both list multipoint. The retrieved US Sony listings showed $459.99 for the XM6 and $299.99 for the XM5, but prices can change; verify the current price on Sony’s XM6 listing and Sony’s XM5 listing.
Neither model is a universal fix for unwanted sound. Noise reduction depends partly on fit and seal, and the right trade-off is personal. If possible, try the headphones on before committing, particularly if you wear glasses.
