The Sonos Ace Ultra is a $449 US over-ear headphone with Bluetooth, wired listening, spatial-audio features, and a new way to move audio between headphones and compatible Sonos gear. Its strongest case is for listeners who want both premium headphones and a Sonos-based TV or music setup. But its headline ecosystem feature, Headphone Linking, is still an opt-in Early Access feature—not a finished reason to buy on its own.
What the Sonos Ace Ultra offers
Sonos positions the Ace Ultra as its newest premium over-ear headphone. It has a Sonos-designed 40 mm driver, ten microphones for noise control, calls, Aware mode, and TrueCinema, and Bluetooth 6.0. It also supports Wi-Fi for Sonos system features, plus USB-C and 3.5 mm wired connections. The listed weight is 0.71 lb (0.322 kg). Sonos lists Black, Soft White, Agave, and Sand color options. Key specifications and included accessories
- Connections: Bluetooth, USB-C, and 3.5 mm; Wi-Fi supports Sonos system linking.
- Audio: 40 mm driver, adaptive active noise cancellation (ANC), Aware mode, spatial audio, and Dolby Atmos support with compatible content and devices.
- App EQ: Bass, mids, and treble controls, with 3-band and 8-band modes. Adaptive EQ is designed to compensate for fit-related acoustic leaks, including those caused by glasses, hair, or head movement.
- Lossless listening: Sonos lists USB-C and Bluetooth aptX as lossless paths; Bluetooth lossless requires a source device that supports Qualcomm aptX.
- In the box: Headphones, travel case, USB-C to USB-C cable, USB-C to 3.5 mm cable, and documentation.
- Serviceability: Sonos says the battery and ear cushions are designed to be swapped out and lists model-specific replacement cushions separately.
How good is the sound?
Independent reviewers agree that the Ace Ultra improves substantially on the original Sonos Ace, but they do not describe it as the undisputed best choice for music. What Hi-Fi? calls the sound-quality improvement marked while saying the headphones remain short of class leaders. TechRadar describes them as more open, detailed, and balanced than the original Ace, but says the Sony WH-1000XM6 and Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S3 can have an edge on some music qualities. Those are reviewers’ comparative judgments, not a guarantee that every listener will hear the same differences. What Hi-Fi?’s review · TechRadar’s review
#1 Best Overall
- Sonos-designed driver for deep, rich, detailed sound.
- High-resolution wireless audio with ultra-low latency.
- Up to 2x more Active Noise Cancellation than Sonos Ace.
- Up to 35 hours of battery with ANC on.
- Adaptive EQ tunes the sound based on your fit and movement.
Dolby Atmos and spatial audio are relevant if you often watch compatible films or listen to compatible content. They are not universal enhancements: Dolby Atmos requires compatible content and a compatible device. For ordinary Bluetooth listening, a Sonos speaker is not required.
Do you need a Sonos system?
No. You can pair the headphones with an iOS or Android device over Bluetooth and listen without a Sonos speaker. Sonos recommends setting them up in its app to register and update them; setup also makes the available controls and system features accessible. These include EQ, noise-control modes, TV Audio Swap, and headphone linking. Sonos setup instructions

Headphone Linking is promising, but still Early Access
Headphone Linking is the feature most specific to the Sonos ecosystem. Sonos describes it as a direct connection that can move music between the Ace Ultra and compatible Sonos speakers using the Content Key, without a phone in range. However, Sonos labels the feature opt-in Early Access and says it is offered as-is while under development. It requires Wi-Fi, the Sonos app, and a compatible Sonos speaker. Treat it as a feature in progress, not a guaranteed, finished benefit. Sonos product details

TV Audio Swap sends audio from a compatible Sonos soundbar to the headphones. TrueCinema is designed to tune the headphone experience to a room and compatible soundbar; dynamic head tracking can be enabled in the Sonos app. What Hi-Fi? reports that its reviewer transferred movie audio from a Beam (Gen 2) by pressing and holding the Content Key and found TrueCinema more cinematic in that room. That is one reviewer’s experience, not a promise of the same result in every room or setup. What Hi-Fi?’s review

Battery life, charging, and travel
Sonos advertises up to 35 hours of listening with ANC or Aware mode enabled. It also says a three-minute charge from 0% can provide up to three hours of playback, and that a full charge from 0% can take up to three hours. These are manufacturer specifications; independent battery measurements are not established by the cited sources. Sonos product details
Travel convenience is a trade-off. TechRadar notes that the headphones are not fully foldable and are less convenient to pack when space is constrained. The included travel case helps protect them, but does not change their folding design. TechRadar’s review

How the Ace Ultra compares with premium alternatives
There is no single winner across all the relevant categories in the cited reviews. TechRadar names the Sony WH-1000XM6 and Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S3 as alternatives, and reports that either can edge the Sonos on some music qualities. The sources do not establish a consistent, side-by-side winner for every measure below, so the useful comparison is which trade-offs matter to you.

| Music detail and soundstage | TechRadar says the Ace Ultra is more open, detailed, and balanced than the original Ace, while the Sony WH-1000XM6 and Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S3 can edge it on some music qualities. What Hi-Fi? says it remains short of class leaders. | If music listening is your priority, compare these models with your own familiar tracks rather than assuming the Sonos system features compensate for a sound preference. |
| ANC and calls | The cited reviews do not establish a category-wide ANC or call-quality winner. | Try the headphones in the noisy places where you expect to use them, if possible. |
| Comfort and weight | Sonos lists the Ace Ultra at 0.71 lb (0.322 kg); the cited sources do not provide directly comparable comfort measurements for all three models. | Fit is personal; consider wearing comfort over a longer session. |
| Battery life | Sonos claims up to 35 hours with ANC or Aware mode enabled; the cited review summaries do not establish a like-for-like battery comparison. | Compare manufacturer claims and independent tests under similar conditions before treating small differences as decisive. |
| Folding and carry | TechRadar says the Ace Ultra is not fully foldable and is less convenient for constrained packing. | Frequent travelers who pack tightly may prefer a design that folds more compactly. |
| TV and spatial audio | The Ace Ultra supports Sonos TV Audio Swap and TrueCinema with compatible equipment; What Hi-Fi? reports a positive TrueCinema experience in its reviewer’s room. | These features matter most if you already use a compatible Sonos soundbar and watch compatible content. |
| Sonos integration | The Ace Ultra offers TV Audio Swap and Headphone Linking; Headphone Linking remains opt-in Early Access and requires a compatible speaker, Wi-Fi, and the app. | Do not pay a premium solely for Headphone Linking unless its current Early Access status and requirements suit you. |
| Price | Sonos lists the Ace Ultra at $449 in the United States. The cited review material does not establish current prices for the alternatives. | Check current local prices for all models before deciding; prices can change. |
Who should buy the Sonos Ace Ultra?
A good fit
- Sonos owners who want private TV listening through a compatible soundbar.
- Listeners who value app controls, wired options, spatial audio, and the option to move audio around a Sonos setup.
- Buyers who like the Ace Ultra’s sound character and are comfortable paying the US list price for its combination of headphone and system features.
Look elsewhere or compare first
- Travelers who need headphones that fold compactly.
- Buyers whose top priority is music performance, ANC, or another category where the cited reviews do not crown the Sonos a leader.
- Anyone buying primarily for Headphone Linking and expecting a mature, universally available feature.
Verdict
The Sonos Ace Ultra is easiest to justify as a premium headphone for someone who will use its TV and Sonos-system features as well as listen to music. Its sound is a reported improvement over the original Ace, while the cited reviews still identify competitors that may better suit some music listeners. If you do not own compatible Sonos equipment, it remains usable over Bluetooth, but much of its distinct ecosystem appeal disappears. At $449 in the US, buy it for the combination of sound, wired and wireless options, and compatible Sonos features—not on the assumption that every new system feature is already finished.
