Yes—shorter games can be worth buying when their price, quality, pacing, and playtime fit what you want. There is no universal number of hours a game must provide to justify its price. Use cost per hour as one comparison if maximizing playtime matters to you, but weigh it against the kind of experience you want.

Is there a minimum number of hours a game should last?

No reliable universal cutoff separates a “short” game from a worthwhile one. Players describe game length differently, and the value of a given number of hours depends on the genre, price, pacing, and what you want from the experience. Discussions of what counts as “short” reflect personal thresholds, not a standard benchmark (Nintendo Life, 2021).

A concise, well-paced story may be a better fit than a much longer game if you have limited gaming time or want a complete experience without a large commitment. If you want exploration, extended progression, multiplayer, or replay, a longer game may suit you better. Those are preference-based trade-offs, not rules about what every player values.

When is a short game good value?

A short game can be good value when the experience it offers is worth the price to you. Hours alone do not measure quality, originality, emotional impact, or whether the pacing feels deliberate. A longer game can include repetition; a shorter one can be tightly constructed. GameSpot’s discussion of game length likewise treats value as more than a simple hours threshold (GameSpot, 2015).

#1 Best Overall
Minecraft - Nintendo Switch
  • Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
  • Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
  • Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
  • Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
  • Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only

Consider a short game a stronger fit if you want a focused story, have limited time, or prefer finishing games rather than maintaining a long-running commitment. A longer game may be a stronger fit if you enjoy optional content, exploration, replay, multiplayer, or extended progression. Neither preference makes the other choice a poor purchase.

How useful is cost per hour?

Cost per hour is a quick comparison, not a verdict. Divide the price you would actually pay by your expected hours of play:

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - US Version
  • New stages and fighters are joined by the combined rosters of every past Super Smash Bros. Game
  • Challenge others anytime, anywhere, whether you're on the couch or on the go
  • Play any way you want—locally, online, in TV mode, Tabletop mode, Handheld mode, or even with GameCube Controllers
  • Fight faster and smarter with new and returning techniques, like the perfect shield and directional air dodge
  • Face off in 2-4 player battles, or play against the computer

Cost per hour = current price ÷ expected playtime

For example, if a game costs $30 in your region and you expect to play it for 10 hours, the calculation is $3 per expected hour. That estimate is only as useful as the inputs: use the price for the platform and edition you plan to buy, and compare equivalent kinds of playtime. A main-story estimate should not be compared directly with another game’s completionist estimate.

MarketYourIndie’s 2026 analysis measured a curated pool of 6,954 paid games on August 15, 2026. Across five price bands above $10, it reported median cost per hour of $1.90 to $2.06, while median playtime ranged from 3.3 to 26 hours. Its playtime measure used the median hours attached to up to 100 recent reviews per game and required at least 10 values to calculate a figure. These are descriptive statistics for that dataset and method—not a recommended rate, a prediction for an individual buyer, or evidence that price causes a particular amount of playtime (MarketYourIndie, 2026).

A 2025 Federal Trade Commission working paper by Joel Waldfogel, Dmitri Reimers, and Michael Riedl found a negative, statistically significant relationship between playtime per dollar and the tendency not to recommend a game in its observed Steam data. In that sample, 7,407 of 59,139 reviews for owned user-game combinations—12.5%—were not recommendations. The result is an association, not proof that shorter games cause dissatisfaction or that adding hours would make a game more satisfying (FTC working paper, 2025).

What should you compare before buying?

  • Playtime type: Check whether an estimate covers the main story, core campaign, optional content, completionist play, multiplayer, or replay. Compare like with like.
  • Actual purchase price: Check the current listing for your region, platform, and edition. Prices and discounts can change.
  • Quality and pacing: Look for evidence that the game is well-made and paced in a way you enjoy. A higher hour count does not guarantee a better experience.
  • Your available time: A bounded game may be more appealing when you want a manageable commitment; a longer one may be more appealing when you want sustained progression.
  • What you want to do: Decide whether story completion, exploration, optional challenges, multiplayer, or replay is the main reason you are considering the game.
  • Cost per hour, if relevant: Calculate it using your expected playtime and the price you would pay, then treat it as one input alongside quality and personal fit.

What playtime data can—and cannot—tell you

Public playtime figures and review data can help set expectations, but they are not guarantees of how long you will play. MarketYourIndie’s figures describe review-attached playtime for a curated set of paid Steam games; its method does not establish how much time a particular buyer will spend with a title.

The FTC working paper also reports that owned games in its sample had average realized playtime of 64.4 hours, compared with 39.9 hours for unowned games. Those sample averages do not predict an individual’s playtime, and they should not be used as a minimum-length target (FTC working paper, 2025).
