Sometimes. A card’s Secret Lair label, alternate art, or crossover theme does not determine whether it is legal in Commander, Modern, or another Magic format. Legality depends on the exact card, its markings and product-specific rules, and the format’s current card list and banned list.
How to check a Secret Lair card’s legality
- Identify the card. Use its printed name and check its official card entry. If it has an interchangeable name, check that relationship too.
- Choose the format. Commander, Modern, Standard, Legacy, Vintage, and Pauper have different card pools and rules.
- Look for a special marking. An acorn security stamp or an older silver border can affect whether a card is suitable for sanctioned formats.
- Check the current format legality and banned list. A card may be legal in one format and not another; legality can also change over time.
- Separate official legality from table agreement. A casual group can agree to allow a card that is not legal under the format’s normal rules, but that agreement does not change official format legality.
Wizards’ Universes Beyond policy announcement and Unfinity release notes illustrate why the product label alone is not enough. For a card-specific answer, verify the official card record and the current rules for the format you intend to play.
What acorn and silver-border markings mean
Acorn-marked Un- cards are not legal in Commander under Wizards’ guidance. The Unfinity release notes also say acorn cards are not legal in Standard. They are intended for casual play where all players agree to include them. Wizards describes the acorn as the signal previously provided by a silver border: “What an acorn security stamp means is exactly what a silver border used to,” wrote Head Designer Mark Rosewater in 2022.

What “Eternal” means—and what it does not
“Eternal” is not a promise that a card is legal in every Magic format. In Wizards’ Unfinity guidance, cards with an oval security stamp—and qualifying lower-rarity cards without a stamp—are described as Eternal. The Unfinity release notes specifically list Commander, Legacy, and Vintage for Unfinity Eternal cards; they also list common Unfinity cards as Pauper-legal.
These are rules for particular Unfinity cards, not a universal rule for Secret Lair cards. A Secret Lair card still needs to be checked against the chosen format’s current card pool and banned list.

How Universes Beyond cards fit into format legality
On October 25, 2024, Wizards announced a forward-looking policy: new Universes Beyond booster sets releasing from 2025 onward would be legal in all major Constructed formats. The announcement did not change the legality of existing sets. It also distinguished related products: cards in associated Commander decks or Jumpstart products may be Eternal-legal, while reprints follow the formats in which the card was already legal. See Wizards’ announcement for the policy details.

Do alternate Secret Lair versions count as different cards?
Different art or a different presentation does not, by itself, create a new rules identity or make a card legal in a format. Wizards’ 2021 announcement said mechanically unique Secret Lair Universes Beyond cards would receive in-Magic versions and that the versions would count as equivalent game pieces. That was a historical policy statement, not a guarantee about current product availability.
Wizards’ April 20, 2022 Comprehensive Rules update explains that cards with interchangeable names count as the same name for deck construction, format legality, and game rules. When two versions appear to have different names, confirm the card’s current Oracle identity and whether they are treated as interchangeable. The art, frame, and crossover branding are not the deciding factors unless a specific rule or marking applies.

Why there is no single yes-or-no answer
Secret Lair is a product line, not a format category with one shared legality rule. Its cards can include reprints, mechanically unique cards, and cards connected to products with different format consequences. Wizards’ published examples explain some of those distinctions, but they do not provide one exhaustive, current roster of every Secret Lair card’s status in every format.
For a particular card, the reliable answer comes from matching its official card identity to the current rules and banned list for the format. If the card is acorn-marked or was printed with a silver border, account for that special status rather than relying on the Secret Lair name.
