A full-screen “Your iPhone is infected” or “Your Mac has a virus” message shown inside Safari is not, by itself, evidence that Safari or your device is infected. Apple warns that these pop-ups can falsely claim viruses or security problems to frighten you into calling a fake support number, sharing personal or financial information, or downloading unwanted software. The right first move is to leave the alert alone: do not call its number, tap its buttons, follow its links, or install anything it offers, then close the tab or window.

A pop-up and an actual infection are different problems. The steps below separate the two, and explain what to do if you installed something, entered a password, or still see symptoms after closing the page.

What a Safari virus warning actually is

A web page can display any text, logo, sound, or repeating dialog it likes. None of that shows that a scan ran or that anything was found on your device. Apple’s guidance on social engineering is direct on this point: “While browsing the web, if you see a pop-up or alert that offers you a free prize or warns about security problems or viruses on your device, don’t believe it.” Apple also advises: “Don’t call the number or follow the links to claim the prize or fix the problem.”

Apple devices can still be infected by genuine malware, so this is not a claim that iPhones and Macs are immune. The point is narrower: a warning that appears in a browser tab is a scam pattern until something on the device itself confirms otherwise.

Match the situation to the response

Situation What to do
A browser pop-up warns of a virus, with no download or credentials entered Close the tab or window, navigate away, and clear Safari website data if the page keeps returning
A Mac pop-up or window keeps returning or seems to take over Safari Use the Mac steps below: enter a new address, reopen Safari holding Shift, update macOS, restart, then check Applications and extensions
Apple’s own malware alert names an app installed on an iPhone or iPad Delete the named app, as Apple instructs
You entered an Apple Account password or other personal details on the page Change the Apple Account password now and confirm two-factor authentication is on
You installed an app, extension, or configuration profile from the page Treat it as installed software: remove what you do not recognize and seek qualified help if problems remain

What to do on iPhone or iPad

  1. Do not call the number, tap a “remove virus” or “clean now” button, install any app or profile, or enter account credentials. Apple’s advice is to ignore these alerts entirely.
  2. Close the tab, or leave the page by typing a new address or going to a bookmark. If you cannot close it, force-quit Safari from the app switcher and reopen it.
  3. To clear the browsing trail, open Settings, tap Apps, tap Safari, then tap Clear History and Website Data. This removes browser history, cookies, and cache. It does not diagnose the device, and it does not remove an app.
  4. Check whether the device shows Apple’s own malware alert for a named app. That is a different message from a web page, and it is covered in the next section.

Settings paths can differ slightly between iOS and iPadOS versions, so if the labels above do not match your screen, search Settings for “Safari” and look for the clear-data option.

What to do on a Mac

  1. Do not interact with the fake warning. Apple says that when a pop-up is simply annoying, you can enter a new address in Safari’s search field and carry on.
  2. If a window or tab seems to take over, quit Safari, then reopen it while holding the Shift key. Holding Shift stops Safari from reopening the windows that were open before, so the alert does not load again.
  3. If pop-ups continue, update macOS through System Settings, then restart the Mac. If macOS is already current, a restart is the next step.
  4. Open the Applications folder and look for apps you do not recognize. Then open Safari’s settings and review the extensions list. Remove only items you recognize as unwanted or suspicious; if you are unsure about an item, leave it and seek help rather than guessing.

When a warning is real: installed software and malware alerts

Apple’s built-in malware alert is a different thing from a browser pop-up. On iPhone and iPad, if the system flags a specific installed third-party app, Apple says to delete that app. The alert names the app; a generic message inside a web page does not.

On a Mac, unwanted software is more often adware or an unfamiliar extension than a classic virus. Look for apps you did not install, and for extensions you do not remember adding. Removing something you installed yourself is safe to do once you have confirmed what it is; removing an unknown system item can cause more trouble, so check it first.

Can Macs get malware?

Yes. Apple describes several layers of built-in defense, but none of them is a guarantee against every threat:

  • Notarisation is a check Apple applies to software distributed outside the App Store.
  • XProtect detects and blocks known malware, and includes remediation capabilities.
  • XProtect signatures update automatically, separately from full macOS updates.

These defenses are a reason not to panic, but they are also not a reason to trust a scary webpage. A pop-up that tells you to call a number is a social-engineering attempt regardless of what XProtect has done.

If you entered information or installed something

You entered your Apple Account password

Change the Apple Account password immediately, and make sure two-factor authentication is turned on. Do not call the number on the alert or revisit the page through its link. Apple describes two-factor authentication as protection for account access even when someone else knows your password, which is why it matters after a password has been exposed.

You installed an app, extension, or configuration profile

At this point the problem is no longer a pop-up. Remove software you do not recognize, using the Applications folder on a Mac or the app’s own removal option on iPhone or iPad, and review any configuration profile in Settings. If the device still behaves oddly after removal, or you cannot tell what was installed, contact Apple Support or a qualified technician rather than running a “cleanup” tool suggested by the warning.

  • Keys use different connectors, including NFC, USB-C, Lightning, and USB-A, depending on the device. Check compatibility with your own iPhone, iPad, or Mac before buying.
  • Apple warns that losing all security keys and trusted devices can permanently lock you out of your account.

Limits of this guidance

The steps above reflect Apple Support material checked in October 2026. Settings labels, menu positions, and available options can change with operating-system version, region, and device. Apple’s published guidance does not include a measured rate of how often these pop-ups appear or how many devices they affect, so this article does not offer one.
