A refurbished SSD can be a reasonable budget buy if you know its exact model, can review drive-specific health data, and have a clear return window and written warranty. Don’t rely on a seller’s health percentage alone: check how much data has been written, confirm compatibility, and weigh the remaining warranty and seller’s documentation against your intended use.
What makes an SSD refurbished—and is it safe?
“Refurbished” does not by itself tell you how heavily a drive was used, what was repaired, or how it was tested. The important question is whether the seller provides enough information to assess that individual drive and offers a way to return it if it fails or does not match the listing.
SSD endurance is finite. SanDisk explains that solid-state drives have a limited number of read-write cycles, commonly measured as terabytes written (TBW). A refurbished drive with modest recorded use and good documentation may suit a budget computer; an undocumented or heavily written drive is a poor choice for a write-intensive workload or the only copy of important files.
No independent failure-rate statistic or controlled study specific to refurbished SSDs is established here, so a precise failure risk cannot be given. SMART data can help you evaluate a particular drive, but it is not a guarantee against future failure.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
How to evaluate a used SSD’s health
Get a drive-specific SMART report
Ask for a recent report for the actual drive being sold, not a generic screenshot or a claim that it has been “tested.” Look for percentage used or remaining life, total data written, power-on hours if reported, and media or integrity errors. Kingston describes SMART attributes as measurements of drive health that can warn of impending failure.
The available attributes vary by drive: manufacturers choose which details their products report. SanDisk’s guidance is to check GB Written for SATA drives or Data Units Written for NVMe drives in its dashboard. If a report omits a requested field, ask the seller whether the drive does not report it or whether the report is incomplete.

- Superior performance as compared to traditional hard drives (HDD)
- Ultra-low power consumption
- Backwards compatible with SATA II 3GB/sec
Compare written data with the model’s TBW limit
Find the published TBW for the exact model and capacity, then compare it with the drive’s total written data. TBW is an endurance rating, not a prediction of the date a drive will fail. A number below the rating does not prove that the SSD is healthy, while a high percentage of the rating already used leaves less rated write endurance for your workload.

Samsung’s 870 EVO warranty terms end at the stated time period or the applicable capacity-specific TBW limit, whichever comes first. Check the terms for the exact model rather than assuming every SSD has the same warranty or endurance allowance.

- DO MORE WITH DASHBOARD. Ensure your drive is optimized for prime performance with the downloadable WD_BLACK Dashboard (Windows only).
Interpret health percentages cautiously
A displayed health percentage is only one indicator. Check what the tool means by the figure and read it alongside total writes, errors, and the seller’s warranty and return terms. SanDisk advises replacing a drive when its reported health reaches 0% or its warranty period ends; that guidance should not be treated as a universal SMART standard for every manufacturer.
Check the exact model and compatibility
Before paying, get the exact model or part number, capacity, form factor, interface, and firmware version. Confirm that the part fits your computer and uses an interface it supports. A 2.5-inch SATA SSD and an M.2 NVMe SSD are not interchangeable just because both are called SSDs; the computer needs the matching connection, or an appropriate adapter where one is supported.

- EXCELLENCE IN PERFORMANCE: Enjoy professional level SSD performance which maximizes the SATA interface limit to 560 530 MB/s sequential speeds,* accelerates write speeds and maintains long term high performance with a larger variable buffer, Designed for gamers and professionals to handle heavy workloads of high-end PCs, workstations and NAS
- INDUSTRY-DEFINING RELIABILITY: Meet the demands of every task — from everyday computing to 8K video processing, with up to 600 TBW** under a 5-year limited warranty***
- MORE COMPATIBLE THAN EVER: The 870 EVO has been compatibility tested**** for major host systems and applications, including chipsets, motherboards, NAS, and video recording devices
- UPGRADE WITH EASE: Using the 870 EVO SSD is as simple as plugging it into the standard 2.5 inch SATA form factor on your desktop PC or laptop; The renewed migration software takes care of the rest
Use the exact part number to check the manufacturer’s specifications and warranty terms. If the seller cannot identify the drive precisely, you cannot reliably verify its interface, published TBW, or model-specific warranty.
What to ask the seller before buying
- What is the exact model, capacity, form factor, interface, and firmware?
- Can you provide a recent SMART report for this drive, including total data written and any reported errors?
- What is the drive’s serial number or other traceable lot information?
- Is the warranty from the manufacturer or the refurbisher? Is it transferable, what does it cover, and who pays return shipping?
- What is the return window, and what happens if the drive’s reported condition differs from the listing?
- What testing or repair was performed during refurbishment?
Prefer a seller that provides drive-specific evidence, clearly states warranty exclusions, and offers a practical return period. Keep the health report and invoice together in case you need to make a claim.

How to decide whether a refurbished SSD is worth it
Compare the price per usable terabyte with the remaining endurance evidence and the quality of the warranty and return policy. A low price is less compelling if the drive’s model is unclear, written data is undisclosed, or the seller offers no workable remedy. Consider your workload too: a lightly used, well-documented drive may be appropriate for ordinary use, while frequent large writes call for more confidence in remaining endurance.
Refurbished does not mean risk-free. Keep backups of important data and do not make any single SSD—new or refurbished—the sole home for files you cannot replace. Samsung’s warranty guidance also advises backing up important data before service.
