Some Prime Day deals are genuinely competitive, but a sale badge or large discount percentage does not prove that an item is a bargain. Check the exact product’s price history, compare it with the same model at other retailers, and calculate the full checkout cost. Buy only if the item was already on your list and the price meets a target you would have set without a countdown.
What the evidence says about Prime Day prices
Deal quality varies by product. Which? tracked 32 high-profile Amazon UK offers during the June 2026 Prime Day sale and examined their prices over the preceding six months. Nearly two-thirds had not been cheaper during that period, while about one-third had been available below the advertised Prime Day price at some point. The sample describes those 32 UK offers, not every Prime Day listing, other countries or future events. Which?’s analysis also found that 19% of the products had not been sold at their stated RRP or Was Price, or higher, on Amazon UK in the previous six months.
Amazon told Which? that all 32 items it examined were cheaper during Prime Day than they had been in the previous 30 days. That is Amazon’s response to the investigation; it is a different comparison window from Which?’s six-month finding that around one-third had previously been cheaper. A 30-day comparison and a longer history can both be accurate while answering different questions.
How to check whether a Prime Day price is good
- Match the exact item. Confirm model number, generation, size, storage, color, bundle contents, seller and condition. A different configuration is not a like-for-like comparison. The FTC’s shopping guidance likewise recommends checking the manufacturer or model number and details such as size and color.
- Look at the price history. On eligible Amazon product pages, open Price history or use Alexa for Shopping, then select the longest available view. Compare the offer with the product’s ordinary price pattern and previous lows rather than relying on a single reference price. Amazon says Alexa for Shopping offers 30-, 90- and 365-day views; availability, rollout and eligible products vary by country. Its feature information says the tool is available in the US, UK, Canada and India, and that 365-day insights were rolling out in the US, UK and India at publication time. Check the product page for current availability.
- Compare other retailers. Search for the exact model at reputable competing stores, matching condition and bundle contents. Which? suggests CamelCamelCamel for Amazon price tracking and PriceRunner for wider comparisons.
- Work out the checkout total. Include delivery, handling, taxes and mandatory fees. Check whether the advertised price depends on buying another product or meeting another condition. The FTC advises shoppers to account for shipping and other charges when comparing offers. FTC guidance
- Check the seller, condition and terms. Read the full description and confirm whether the item is new, refurbished, vintage or close-out. Review seller details, warranty and return terms; sale items may have different return policies. The FTC also cautions that an unusually low price on a branded product can be a reason to scrutinize whether it is counterfeit or stolen. FTC guidance
- Compare the result with your own target. A previous low is useful context, not a promise that the same price will return. If the current total misses your target, wait or skip it; a deadline does not make a purchase worthwhile.
What Amazon’s discount labels mean—and what they do not
Amazon says its displayed savings use validated reference prices, including List Price and Typical Price. Its explanation describes List Price, also called MSRP, as a price submitted by independent sellers, manufacturers or suppliers and validated by Amazon. Typical Price, or “Was” Price, is described as the median price paid on Amazon during the previous 90 days, excluding prices paid during limited-time deals. Amazon also says it works to offer deals at the lowest price in at least the preceding 30 days. These are Amazon’s stated methods, not an independent audit of each listing. In the Which? sample, products that had reached their higher RRP or Was Price had been at that price for an average of only a third of the six-month period. The products were at or above their non-member price for an average of 48% of that period. Those findings help explain why a discount label alone is not enough: a reference price, a recent price history and a competitor’s current price each answer a different question. Which? analysis
Make a like-for-like comparison
Before choosing between offers, compare the same product and purchase conditions. If the products differ, decide which features matter to you before treating price as the deciding factor.
