Usually, yes—but “Redux” is not a universal performance grade. Noctua uses the Redux name for particular fan designs in a grey colour scheme with a streamlined package. The fair comparison is between matching models, such as the NF-P12 and NF-P12 redux-1300 PWM. Their published maximum airflow, noise and static-pressure figures are the same, while the connector, speed control and included accessories differ.
What Redux means
Redux identifies a specific edition, not a promise that every grey Noctua fan performs like every beige-and-brown fan. Noctua describes the line as a streamlined package reduced to the essential fan and mounting hardware. Colour is the most obvious difference: the standard NF-P12 has a beige frame and brown impeller, while the NF-P12 redux-1300 PWM has a light-grey frame and dark-grey impeller.
Because Noctua sells several different fan designs, compare the exact model number and intended use rather than judging the colourway alone.
NF-P12 versus NF-P12 redux-1300 PWM
These are the most useful like-for-like examples. The figures below are Noctua’s maximum published specifications, not independent laboratory measurements or listening tests.
#1 Best Overall

Those matching headline ratings indicate that Noctua positions the Redux model as the same general NF-P12 design, not as a slower or weaker grey replacement. They do not prove identical sound character, bearing condition, acoustics in a particular case, or real-world cooling results.
The control difference matters more than the colour
3-pin standard NF-P12
A 3-pin fan normally uses voltage control for speed adjustment. Whether that works depends on the motherboard or fan controller: some headers can regulate 3-pin fans, while others leave them at full speed. The standard model includes LNA and ULNA adaptors, giving you fixed lower-speed options without relying on motherboard support.

4-pin PWM Redux
The NF-P12 redux-1300 PWM uses a 4-pin PWM connector and is specified with a 0–1,300 rpm range. A compatible PWM header can vary its speed through firmware or software while retaining a tachometer signal. Confirm that your header supports PWM control and that the fan can start reliably at the low speeds you intend to use.

If your system has only 3-pin headers, the Redux fan can still receive power, but you may lose the intended PWM control or need a suitable controller or adaptor. Conversely, a 4-pin motherboard header can generally power a 3-pin fan, but its available control mode must be checked in the board manual.

Choose the design for the restriction in front of it
Noctua describes the NF-P12 as pressure-optimised for CPU coolers, water-cooling radiators and cases with tight fan grills. Static pressure is important when air must pass through a dense heatsink, radiator or restrictive mesh. Airflow is more informative in an open, low-resistance case position.
Different Noctua models demonstrate why “better” is not a meaningful blanket label. The NF-S12B FLX is rated at 1,200 rpm maximum, 100.6 m³/h airflow, 18.1 dB(A) maximum noise and 1.31 mm H₂O static pressure. It has higher rated airflow but lower rated pressure than the NF-P12, and it is a different design—not an alternative NF-P12 colourway.

| Model | Maximum speed | Maximum airflow | Maximum noise | Maximum static pressure | Typical design emphasis |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| NF-P12 / NF-P12 redux-1300 PWM | 1,300 rpm | 92.3 m³/h (54.33 CFM) | 19.8 dB(A) | 1.68 mm H₂O | Pressure-oriented positions such as coolers, radiators and tight grills |
| NF-S12B FLX | 1,200 rpm | 100.6 m³/h | 18.1 dB(A) | 1.31 mm H₂O | Different airflow-focused design |
Manufacturer maximums are useful for matching a fan to a restriction, but they do not predict the temperature or perceived noise in every case. Fan placement, radiator or heatsink resistance, controller settings and the surrounding case all affect the result.

The standard NF-P12’s listed package includes low-noise and ultra-low-noise adaptors. The Redux specification lists the fan and fan screws, so budget for any speed-control or mounting accessories your installation needs. Noctua identifies optional anti-vibration mounts, low-noise adaptors, Y-cables, 3:4-pin adaptors and extension cables as accessory categories; exact compatibility should be checked against your header and mounting location.
Which one should you buy?
Pick the Redux when
- You prefer a grey, less conspicuous appearance.
- You want 4-pin PWM control and your motherboard or controller supports it.
- You are installing an NF-P12 in a radiator, CPU cooler or restrictive grill position.
- You do not need the standard package’s bundled LNA and ULNA adaptors.
Pick the standard beige/brown NF-P12 when
- Your setup relies on 3-pin voltage control.
- You want the included LNA and ULNA speed adaptors.
- The beige-and-brown colour scheme is acceptable or intentional.
- The exact listing offers the accessories and connector your build requires.
Consider another Noctua design when
- Your location is an open, low-resistance case intake and airflow is the priority.
- You are comparing an NF-S12B FLX or another model rather than an NF-P12 variant.
- The required mounting size, connector or speed range differs from 120 mm, 4-pin PWM or 3-pin operation.
Before ordering a 120 mm Redux fan
- Read the complete model name; “Redux” alone does not identify the blade design or connector.
- Check that the position accepts a 120 × 120 × 25 mm fan.
- Confirm whether the header provides 3-pin voltage control or 4-pin PWM control.
- Decide whether you need bundled low-noise adaptors, extension cables, splitters or anti-vibration mounts.
- Use airflow and static-pressure ratings together, matching pressure-oriented models to radiators, heatsinks and restrictive grills.
- Verify the current regional listing for availability and price, which can change independently of Noctua’s specifications.
Bottom line
For the NF-P12 comparison, the Redux version is not presented by Noctua as a lower-performance fan: its published maximum airflow, noise and static-pressure ratings match the standard NF-P12. The practical choice is about grey styling, PWM versus 3-pin control, and what is included in the box. Treat other Redux and beige/brown models as separate designs until their exact specifications show otherwise.
