No: MSI’s MPG EZ120 ARGB fans still need to connect to power and lighting controls. Their magnetic connector blocks carry power and signal between adjoining fans, reducing the visible wiring in a linked group. The result is a cleaner-looking fan installation, not a wireless one.
What “cable-free” means on the MPG EZ120 ARGB
MSI announced the 120 mm MPG EZ120 ARGB on April 11, 2024. Magnetic connector blocks join neighboring fans and carry power and signal between them, so fewer separate wires need to run from fan to fan. MSI says each fan has 33 LEDs across its blades and frame. MSI’s product announcement describes the connector blocks as carrying power and signal between fans.
The magnetic links simplify the connections within a group; they do not remove the need to connect the group to a motherboard or control hub. The fans also need a suitable power and lighting connection, using either the listed 7-pin JAF option or separate 4-pin PWM and 3-pin ARGB connectors. Plan for cables from the fan group to the board or hub, even if the short inter-fan runs are reduced.

- Fan Hub Included - The hub has 4 expansion ports and supporting up to 18 pcs MPG EZ120 ARGB fans connection that maximizes the airflow and lighting at the same time.
- Mystic Light Sync - Set up the vibe in your way! Each fan is divided into 3 zones to control lighting effects and colors individually via the Mystic Light utility
| Package | Listed contents | Hub included? |
|---|---|---|
| One fan | One fan, decorative blocks, JAF and ARGB cables, and screws | No |
| Three fans | Three fans, decorative blocks, four magnetic connector blocks, ARGB fan control hub, magnetic plate, hub and fan cables, daisy-chain cable, and screws | Yes |
If you are buying a single fan, do not assume the hub comes with it. MSI lists the included hub as supporting up to 18 MPG EZ120 ARGB or MPG EZ120R ARGB fans. Its January 2024 CES article described two control groups for that capacity; confirm the hub’s control arrangement and package contents against the listing for the specific product you intend to buy. Do you need a special motherboard?
No special motherboard is required simply to use the magnetic links. MSI lists two connection approaches: a 7-pin JAF connector, or separate 4-pin PWM fan and 3-pin ARGB connectors. Check your exact board’s headers and the cables supplied with the package to determine which method fits your build.

MSI’s EZ Conn guide explains that JAF_1 combines a system-fan header and 5V ARGB header in one 7-pin connector. JAF_2 is an 11-pin connector that combines system fan, 5V ARGB, and front USB 2.0. MSI lists EZ120 ARGB as compatible with JAF headers and provides a current 800-series motherboard list on the guide page. A JAF header is one supported route, not a prerequisite if you use the separate PWM and ARGB connections. MSI’s EZ Conn guide.

Project Zero motherboards move connections to the back of the board to clear the visible front area. This is an optional system-level approach, not a requirement for EZ120’s magnetic fan-to-fan connection. Compatibility depends on the case as well as the motherboard: MSI cautions that Project Zero boards do not work well in cases not designed for them. Its Project Zero page lists compatible cases, including models that support both back-connect and regular motherboard installations. MSI Project Zero.

Published speed, airflow, pressure, and noise figures
MSI’s specification sheet, generated October 7, 2025, lists these figures for the MPG EZ120 ARGB. They are manufacturer specifications, not independent comparative test results.
| Specification | MSI-listed value |
|---|---|
| Fan speed | 0–1900 RPM ±10% |
| Maximum airflow | 73.82 CFM |
| Maximum air pressure | 2.56 mmH2O |
| Noise level | 28.82 dBA |
| Dimensions | 120 × 120 × 28 mm |
| Weight | 203 g per fan |
| Colors | Black or white |
MSI’s January 2024 CES roundup reported testing at up to 2000 RPM and noise around 28.7 dBA. That earlier MSI-reported test statement differs from the later specification sheet’s 1900 RPM ±10% and 28.82 dBA listings; it should not be treated as an independent test or combined with the later figures as though they were one specification. The available figures do not establish that the EZ120 is quieter or cooler than another fan.

Will they be quiet, and will they make a build cooler?
The published 28.82 dBA noise figure and 73.82 CFM maximum airflow are useful specifications, but they do not by themselves predict the sound or temperatures in a particular PC. The result depends on operating speed and the surrounding system, and the cited material does not provide an independent comparison against other fans. MSI attributes reduced vibration and noise, as well as enhanced durability, to the fluid dynamic bearing and an extra fixing nut; those are manufacturer claims rather than independently demonstrated outcomes. MSI’s specification sheet.
“Cool vibes” is best understood as a visual description: the fans have addressable lighting and magnetic connections intended to simplify a tidy installation. Do not read it as proof of lower temperatures or superior cooling relative to another model.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Streamlined Fan Connections: Daisy-chain multiple fans together and control them all through just one 4-pin PWM connector and one +5V ARGB connector.
- Lighting Made Easy: Eight LEDs per fan shine bright with customisable lighting through your motherboard’s built-in ARGB control (requires compatible motherboard).
- Precise PWM Speeds: Set your fan speeds up to 2,100 RPM while providing up to 72.8 CFM airflow to your system.
- CORSAIR AirGuide Technology: Anti-vortex vanes direct airflow at your hottest components for concentrated cooling, pushing air in the direction you need when mounted to a radiator or heatsink.
- High Static Pressure: RS fans work well as radiator fans with a static pressure of 2.8mm-H2O to push through obstructions.
What to check before buying
- Pack size: Confirm whether you are buying one fan or three; MSI lists the control hub in the three-fan package only.
- Connection route: Check for a compatible JAF header, or the separate PWM and 5V ARGB headers needed for the listed alternative connection.
- Hub needs: If you want the included hub, choose a package that actually includes it and verify its stated supported fan models and capacity.
- Physical fit: Allow for the listed 120 × 120 × 28 mm size and check clearance in the case or on the radiator where you plan to mount the fan.
- Back-connect builds: If using Project Zero, verify the case is compatible with the motherboard’s back-connect layout; this is separate from EZ120 fan compatibility.
- Market listing: Check the package description for your region, since contents and availability may vary.
