Yes, you can wear Meta smart glasses in public, but wearing them is not permission to record everyone around you. The capture light signals certain gallery photos and videos; it does not establish that every AI feature or processing activity is signaled. Recording, AI use, sharing, local law, and venue rules are separate questions.
What the capture light does—and does not—tell people
Meta says the front-facing white capture LED blinks briefly for a photo and remains lit during video recording for the wearer’s gallery. Meta also says the light has no off switch. That is a signal that gallery content is being captured; it is not proof that the glasses are doing no other processing. See Meta’s AI glasses FAQ.
The distinction matters because, in June 2026, the Texas Attorney General announced an investigation and raised concerns about an “always enabled” AI mode, including that the indicator is not active during that mode. Those are the office’s allegations and concerns, not an adjudicated finding or an independent account of how every model and software version works. The announcement is available from the Texas Attorney General.

Are Meta glasses recording, storing, or sharing what they see?
Meta says photos and videos captured for the gallery are stored privately on the glasses until the wearer imports them to a phone, and the wearer chooses whether to share them. This description applies to gallery photos and videos; it should not be generalized to every voice request, AI feature, or possible processing path. Meta’s FAQ describes the company’s position.
Can the capture light be blocked?
Meta says blocking the light disables the camera. Its FAQ says that, beginning with the second generation, the glasses detect a blocked capture LED, and that Meta is updating detection of physical tampering or destruction. These are the manufacturer’s stated safeguards, not an independent guarantee for every device and feature. Meta’s responsible-innovation page also says taking photos or video when the light is covered is prohibited by its features and that deliberately covering it while recording goes against its guidelines.

Is it legal to wear or record with camera glasses in public?
There is no single answer for every place or kind of recording. Rules may differ for video, audio, private conversations, and sensitive locations, and venue policies can apply even where recording might otherwise be lawful.

Gavin Newsom vetoed a bill targeting secret recording with smart glasses. It also notes existing restrictions on recording in spaces generally considered private and reports that about a dozen states require permission to record a conversation. How to use them considerately around other people
- Tell people when you intend to record them and ask first when feasible.
- Do not record in bathrooms, changing areas, medical settings, or other places where people reasonably expect privacy.
- Follow venue rules, which may prohibit recording regardless of what the capture light signals.
Asking is a practical courtesy, not a guarantee that a recording complies with every law or policy. Meta’s responsible-innovation guidance describes excluding places where people expect privacy in its product testing approach.
